Chapter 19 - Chapter 19.

On a hot, sunny Friday afternoon, Alfredo and Lucinda Karahani arrived at Braeburn International School to see their son face the school boxing champion during the school parents' day.

The school hall was packed to capacity as teachers and the school administration sat on one side with parents on the other side and students sitting near their parents.

The boxing ring was raised on a platform to ensure everyone was able to watch the boxing match.

Esau entered the ring amidst cheers from the crowd of pupils, wearing a black silk shorts, a red vest, a pair of red gloves, and red headgear. He proceeded to sit in the red corner.

In the blue corner, Singh sat wearing white shorts, black sports shoes, a blue vest, blue gloves, and blue headgear.

The referee was the chairman of the boxing club, a final year pupil who wore a white long sleeve shirt, a black bore tie, black trousers, and black shoes

The five judges were also final year students. They sat at different sides of the ring, but only three scores were to determine the outcome of the match.

Indeed, the club tried to ensure all the rules of amateur boxing were adhered to. The ring announcer, the secretary of club, who was also a final year student, stepped forward and made the announcement.

"Our school principal, teachers, dear parents, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. Braeburn International School Boxing club is today privileged to present to you a three rounds welterweight boxing match," announced the ring announcer as the crowd roared in cheers.

"In the red corner is the challenger, Esau Karahani," he announced as Esau raised his hands, and the crowd roared once again.

There was pause. Then he went on to announce, "In the blue corner is the defending champion, Kamal Singh, a final year student."

The crowd roared once again.

"Now let's get to rumble," shouted the announcer and added, "Let the match begin!"

The bell rang for the first round. All eyes were riveted on the two contestants in the ring.

Singh immediately charged at Esau and shot three straight jabs at his face as he looked for an opening to knock him down. And he found it when Esau let his guard down; Singh threw a powerful right that sent Esau down to the canvas.

The crowd applauded, but Esau rose up quickly to his feet even before the referee could begin to count.

They charged at each other, Esau found an opening and swung at Singh with a few punches, then threw several jabs his face.

He began to take control of the fight when the bell rang for the end of the round. The two pugilists went to their corners.

Many in the crowd believed Singh had won the first round.

The bell rang again for the second round. Esau came out strongly as he charged at Singh and sent powerful shots at his opponent's face.

A powerful right, followed by a left hook, hit Singh's jaw, and he felt as if he had been hit by a sledge hammer. Singh retreated as he felt weakened, but Esau pursued him with several jabs that sent him reeling across the ring.

The parents who were watching were quite impressed by Esau's footwork and cheered when they saw him mount pressure on his opponent.

Singh appeared quite dazed by Esau's hard punches and took a defensive position in his corner, but Esau kept pounding heavy blows on his body before Singh's hands gripped him.

The referee moved in to separate them and signalled them to box again. Esau moved in quickly; an uppercut followed by a right hook to the jaw sent Singh to the canvas as the bell for the end of the round rang.

The crowd cheered wildly as they saw Esau walk to his corner while Singh rose lazily and went to his corner.

Everyone, including the judges, knew who won the second round.

The final round saw Esau remain in control of the fight as he charged at Singh, who made every desperate effort to avoid the heavy punches aimed at his head.

Then Singh suddenly came alive and tried to punch his way to Esau as parents and students cheered wildly at Singh's apparent resurrection.

Esau was temporarily dazed by the heavy and fast blows that hit his head. He knew he had to do something to survive the round.

Regaining his posture, Esau quickly closed in on his opponent and threw a flurry of jabs that shocked Singh, who retreated. Esau knew he had to end the fight before Singh regained his strength and posture.

Suddenly, heavy punches sent by Esau began to pound at Singh's body. Then, three powerful calculated jabs on Singh's face, followed by a left and right hook on the jaw and an upper cut to the chin sent him reeling across the ring before another upper cut whistled out of the blues and smashed against his jaw.

A powerful right hook on the jaw did the biggest damage as it sent Singh landing on the canvas. The fight was over.

Parents gasped as they saw Singh fall into submission, but pupils cheered wildly once more. Singh's parents watched sadly as their son was beaten into submission, but Alfredo and Lucinda watched happily with satisfaction written on their faces.

Esau, a second year pupil, had knocked out Singh the school boxing welterweight boxing champion in what appeared to the Indian parents to be one of the biggest upsets in the school's boxing history.

The ring announcer went on to announce the judges' decision on the fight.

"Ladies and gentlemen, in the second minute, twenty-one seconds of the third round, the winner by a knockout and the new boxing champion of Braeburn International School; Esau Karahani," he said as he raised Esau's hand amidst cheers and applause from the crowd of pupils, teachers, parents and school administrators.
