Chapter 9 - Young Blood - Chapter 9

"How are we going to stop that vision from becoming true?" Renan asked, still resting his head on Luna's lap.

"The first step was turning you into a vampire. And now that you're a Young Blood, you're powerful enough to face other vampires and magical creatures without struggling like in your first fight. And you do feel powerful, don't you?" Luna explained.

The boy nodded. He could feel the power he couldn't fully understand and still had to learn to use properly, but that pulsed deep inside him.

"That vampire's name was Damian," Luna continued surprising Renan a bit because that confirmed what the girl with pink hair said on college earlier that day. "That Young Blood ruled over this city for quite a while. Not because he was particularly powerful, but because most vampires stay hidden. But him… he was young and arrogant, always picking fights, and forcing the others to stay away. But even causing trouble the elder vampires didn't bother to deal with him, and just made him feel more inclined to look for more fights."

"Yeah, I noticed. He was ready to fight me head-on," Renan said, still frustrated by the fact that he hadn't been strong enough to defeat Damian without Luna's help.

"And that was his biggest weakness. He had potential, but no purpose. A lot of vampires lose themselves and never evolve because of that—lack of purpose. The elder vampires, only became powerful because have a purpose: domination over the mortal and all other magical creatures. And the only reason they haven't succeeded yet is because they still lack the full means… for now."

Renan gulped hard as her last words echoed in his mind, the terrifying vision flashing again showing a city reduced to ruins, streets littered with lifeless bodies and rumble, the air thick with smoke and blood.

"But we're going to stop them. The next step in the plan is teaching you how to use your vampiric magic," the girl said.

"Ah… magic. You mentioned being a witch before... Is that how you made those chains hold the vampire down last night?"

The girl nodded.

"And it's also how I create these ritual runes."

"But how did you get involved in all this?" the boy asked, looking up at her face from where he lay.

She averted her gaze.

There was a hint of melancholy flickering in her expression.

"I… I've been involved with magic for as long as I can remember. I was trained to use it and to protect humanity," she said distantly in her thoughts as if repeating something she had been taught to say when asked.

It made her uncomfortable, and Renan knew better than to try asking too much about it.

"You don't have to talk about it if it's hard for you," Renan said with a gentle smile. The girl returned a shy smile of her own.

"Yeah… but at some point, I'll have to tell you," she said, looking into the boy's dark eyes.

His eyes were completely different from hers—his were as dark as a bottomless void, while hers shimmered with a light that some might find unsettling, but that he found strangely captivating.

She lay down beside him, wrapping her arms around him. He could feel her soft body pressing against his, and even though they were on the floor. Because they were in each other's presence it was comfortable enough.

"Tomorrow, we begin your training. So rest now, my love," she whispered in his ear, and the boy closed his eyes as she rested her head on his chest.

From a nobody he was now the boy destined to save the world from dark monsters. Renan felt like the luckiest guy in the world—he had already forgotten what the pink-haired girl had said about his future being cold and lonely.
