Chapter 4 - Secrets of the Werewolf

Kevin stared in stupefaction at the silver-haired girl before him. Her silver hair fluttering in the cold wind and her golden eyes glowing in the night, not to mention her pointed ears, were all hard to tear one's gaze away from. If it weren't for her unchanged face, Kevin almost wouldn't have recognized her as Liu Lily, the silly girl he had picked up from the city center not long ago.

But it was indeed her. Not only could her appearance confirm this, but her clothes could also prove it.

At this moment, the wind around was cold, the moonlight above was cold, the clothes on his body were cold, and the air he exhaled was cold too. Kevin felt like he was almost frozen, but this abnormal coldness actually kept him awake, especially when the thick, unbearable scent of blood filled the surroundings. This wakefulness was even more important: he could be vigilant about the situation around him while trying to figure out why he had encountered such things in the real world today.

He didn't start a conversation with Lily as casually as before. Perhaps the eerie surroundings had taken away his mood to talk, or maybe seeing Lily's strange appearance made him unsure how to start. To be honest, girls with animal ears were pretty cute, but who knew if this girl with animal ears had a setting of her personality drastically changing after transforming? Kevin was one hundred percent sure he saw a hint of primitive beastliness in Lily's eyes, which made him tremble with fear, and then his mind started scrolling through bizarre works from both domestic and overseas.

As the coldness and scent of blood around became heavier, a thin layer of ice covered the ground of the path, and the bright moon in the sky had also been dyed a faint red at some unknown time. Kevin was only wearing a thin summer shirt, and he was shivering more and more fiercely in the cold wind. However, Lily seemed to be completely unaffected by it. She just sniffed hard and her ears twitched a few times: "Cunning bats, using the scent of blood to cover up their own scent... Landlord, don't stay too far away from me. Those flying creatures are active at night and specialize in sneak attacks."

After "transforming," Lily spoke with a kind of coldness, but upon hearing the content of her words, Kevin couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief: it seemed like her personality hadn't changed drastically. He dared to ask: "Lily, what's going on? Are you..."

"I'm a werewolf," Lily's ears were even more erect than before, and her tone was filled with pride, "I don't know how it happened, but I'm a werewolf! However, I had been hiding my identity before, and this is the first time someone has seen me... Damn it, getting involved with those flying creatures is definitely not a good thing."

"Oh," Kevin responded, thinking to himself that his worldview from childhood might not be able to continue anymore. But just as he was preparing to say something else, Lily suddenly shouted in a low voice: "They're coming!"

Almost at the same time Lily's words fell, Kevin saw the edge of the red moon tremble, and then a black dot suddenly enlarged from the halo and lunged towards them!

The black dot enlarged into a shadow, and Kevin vaguely felt that this shadow didn't seem to be a bat, but rather like a human figure cloaked in a cape. However, he didn't have time to think more because the shadow was already right in front of him!

His muscles had already been coiled, ready to dodge at any moment. Now that he found himself targeted, his first reaction was to leap aside. And as he jumped with all his might, the shadow almost missed him, brushing past his hair.

The shadow failed to hit its target and was about to crash into the ground. Lily didn't miss this opportunity either. She kicked out with a whip-like leg towards the attacker the instant Kevin dodged. Her attack was simple and brutal, even causing a "bang" sound of an aerial explosion the moment her leg shot out, followed by a series of crackling sounds for more than ten times. Kevin could only see the silver-haired wolf-eared girl almost turning into a silver flash that matched the shadow's speed, using the simplest attacks to fight against the vague, slightly human-shaped shadow. There were no special moves or techniques; every punch and kick was straightforward, but it was simple, brutal, and highly effective: The air almost rippled with visible waves from the powerful punches and kicks, and that shadow gradually gained the lower hand. Finally, it suddenly shrunk into the shape of a bat and dashed towards the sky, apparently preparing to escape.

Lily's last punch missed its mark. At this moment, the black bat had already flown to the top of the wall. She furrowed her brows in anger and emitted a series of "woo-woo" sounds from her throat, which resembled the warning growls of a jackal. Kevin was very familiar with this sound—when he was a child living in the mountains of his hometown, there were wolves at night.

This was exactly that sound!

But this was not the time to marvel. Kevin knew that he had been involved in an incredible incident. Normally, after witnessing such a thing, he would have pondered over this magical experience with anticipation. However, now he only knew that this was a moment of life and death: The bat had escaped into the air but did not leave. It was merely circling leisurely at a high altitude, seemingly mocking the werewolf on the ground for not being able to fly. While flying, it drew various trajectories in the air, sometimes an S, sometimes a B...

Kevin knew that as long as this bat was still circling in the sky, he would never be safe. Although the werewolf girl seemed quite capable in melee combat, she obviously couldn't fly or attack from a distance. What's more, she was kind of an idiot—if the bat rushed down again to directly attack him, Lily might not be able to stop it! What if the girl didn't react in time?

"Woo-woo..." The angry threat in Lily's throat became more suppressed, and the hairs on her ears stood up one by one. Then, she suddenly looked up at the moon and let out a clear, long, and distant howl: "Aooow?"

Just as she looked up to howl, the bat in the sky dived down rapidly. Kevin almost jumped up at that moment: So this werewolf girl was an idiot! In such a life-or-death confrontation, you're still posing for what?!

But just as the bat, enveloped in a cloud of black fog, was about to rush towards Lily, Kevin suddenly saw the latter raise her wrist. Before he could see what was thrown out, he heard a sharp whistling sound tearing through the air. The bat that dive-bombed down barely had time to partially atomize itself before being hit hard and fled back into the sky in disgrace. At this moment, Kevin finally saw what Lily was holding in her other hand: It was a brick, square and sharp-lined, red and chilling, sending shivers down one's spine!

"Ha! Why don't you keep flying?" The werewolf girl provoked the bat circling in the sky loudly. "Don't think I can't deal with you just because you have wings! Ever since I found out I was a werewolf, I've been studying how to deal with flying jerks like you. I've practiced this 'Pegasus Meteor Brick' for five whole years! Come on, let's fight to our hearts' content!"

Kevin fell to the ground headfirst: How could the legendary werewolf's ultimate move be throwing bricks? And it actually succeeded!

The bat in the sky must have been hit hard by a brick earlier, for it flew in a zigzag manner now. Moreover, the bloodlust and cold fog from all directions seemed to fade away, obviously a result of the bat's dwindling strength. It confronted the werewolf girl for a few minutes, and taking advantage of this opportunity, Lily quickly picked up another brick from the ground, reloading her 'ammo'. Seeing this scene, the bat seemed to finally give up, circled once more in the sky, and then turned towards the dark night sky and flew away.

Lily didn't miss the opportunity to kick a man when he's down. She raised her hand and threw both bricks out with a swoosh. Kevin couldn't see the trajectory of the two bricks, but he saw the bat's figure sway again, obviously hit by at least one of them - the five-year-practiced 'Pegasus Meteor Brick' was indeed reliable.

But Kevin was more concerned about where Lily's thrown bricks ended up. The werewolf girl was incredibly strong, and the initial velocity of the bricks was probably comparable to that of cannonballs... He could only pray that this desolate place was sparsely populated and no poor soul would be caught up in this battle between the unusual creatures.

The attacker was repelled, and the surrounding environment gradually returned to normal. The bloodlust seemed to dissipate like an illusion, leaving no trace. The slight heat of the summer night came back, and Kevin rubbed his nose and sneezed loudly: This temperature change was indeed unbearable for normal people. It seemed that a cold was inevitable.

He looked up at the werewolf girl and watched as her stunning silver hair changed back to her original short black hair at a visible speed, and the energetic wolf ears disappeared as well. He clicked his tongue but didn't know what to say.

Even Lily, who was usually a bit dense, could sense the awkward atmosphere at this moment. But she seemed to have expected it, or rather, she had come to this realization a long time ago. She simply turned her head and gave Kevin an awkwardly embarrassed smile, then bent down to pick up her large suitcase and slung it over her shoulder, turning her head to prepare to leave: "Hey, landlord, I'm not renting the house anymore... You should go home. Oh, and don't tell anyone about what happened today. It would cause me a lot of trouble."

After saying that, Lily turned around and walked away.

"Wait!" Kevin finally came to his senses when Lily had already taken a few steps away. "Where are you going at this late hour? Come back with me and let's get your luggage settled as soon as possible..."

Lily turned around in astonishment, her big eyes shining brightly in the night, filled with confusion: "Why? Aren't you afraid that the flying guy will come back? He might be after me? I'm a werewolf, and we're mortal enemies with creatures like him."

Kevin gritted his teeth and finally chuckled: "Because I'm a good guy!"
