Chapter 5 - Chapter Four: The Clouds of Suspicion

"No more," Adam urged. "Let the law punish him. Bind him until the police arrive. Noah, I believe there's rope in the basement, isn't there?"

"Ah, yes, that's right."

"No, I won't go to jail, I won't go to jail!" Archie Miller suddenly broke free from Trevor Moran and bolted for the door.

"You won't escape!" Trevor Moran immediately gave chase, with Adam and Sarah Evans close behind.

Archie Miller, familiar with the estate, quickly made it out of the mansion. However, the snow was too deep to run, forcing him to trudge through it with difficulty. Adam and Trevor Moran also struggled, and a gust of wind swept Trevor Moran off his feet, causing him to fall heavily on top of Adam.

"Damn it, I won't let that scoundrel get away!" Trevor Moran struggled back to his feet and continued forward. But the weather outside was too cold, and he wasn't dressed warmly enough, soon he began to sneeze uncontrollably. Adam, being more warmly dressed, fared a little better. Seeing Archie Miller move further and further away, he was filled with anxiety but helpless. Every step he took required a long time to pull his foot free from the deep snow, and his relatively long legs only made it more cumbersome.

Archie Miller was also gasping for breath, battling the severe cold. Snowflakes swirled in the wind, painting the surroundings a stark white. All the necessary questions had been asked, but not a single clue emerged.

"Officer Lee," James Foster said, putting down the photographs, "It seems we need to focus on Peter Smith and Charles Jones, who had no alibis when Robert Hughes was killed. What are your thoughts?"

"I'm not sure. That Dr. Zhao seems so refined, not like someone who would commit murder. But you can never tell; these days, you can't judge good people from bad by their faces. Captain Foster, actually, you could ask Adam Reynolds for his opinion. Aren't you two about to become in-laws? In the past, he solved..."

"Officer Lee, what are you talking about? He has nothing to do with this case, why would we involve him? Besides, he's very busy now, spending all his time on writing. Let's not dwell on it. I think, perhaps we should talk to Charles Jones again?"

"I think we should just give up. We've talked to him many times these past few days. We won't get anything more out of him, but I really don't understand why, if someone truly wanted to kill Robert Hughes, they would choose such a public place? They could easily be seen. Did the killer wear a mask or a helmet during the crime?"

"Impossible," James Foster stated definitively. "We've thoroughly questioned all eyewitnesses at the scene, and no one reported seeing anyone like that. If there were such a person, they would have been seen long ago. Although we've investigated from the angle of revenge multiple times, we haven't found anyone who had a vendetta against them, and we found nothing from Elizabeth Harper either."
