Focused on Kaelen's face after my confession, I didn't see the car until it was practically upon us.
Time slowed. My hands instinctively flew to my belly, my only thought to shield my unborn child. The headlights blinded me, the engine's roar deafening as the vehicle bore down on us with murderous intent.
In that split second before impact, I felt Kaelen move. His muscular body slammed against mine, arms wrapping around me protectively as he twisted us away from the car's path. I heard metal crunch and glass shatter, followed by the sickening thud of impact.
"Kaelen!" I screamed, disoriented as we tumbled to the ground.
When the world stopped spinning, I was cradled beneath him, his massive frame completely enveloping mine. His breath came in ragged pants against my hair, his body rigid with pain.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded through clenched teeth.
My mind raced to catalog sensations. Nothing felt broken. No overwhelming pain. Just the shock coursing through my system.
