Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Origin (slightly edited)

In this society, around 80 percent of the population is born with an innate power called a quirk. Although rare it people can be born without them. Debbie and Nolan Grayson were a happily married, quirkless couple. It was rare enough to have one quirk-less person, but to have two quirk-less people together was considerably rarer. They were constantly ridiculed, but they didn't care. They had each other.

An evening in a suburb outside Chicago, Nolan and Debbie Grayson were at home relaxing. They were both sitting on their bed, reading in their basic apartment, reading before they went off to bed.

"Goodnight, honey," said Debbie

"Goodnight," said Nolan

When they woke up the next morning, Debbie felt nauseous and went to the bathroom to hover over the toilet. Her husband, concerned, rushed over to her.

"What's wrong, honey?" said Nolan in a concerned voice

Debbie replied, "I'm not sure. I don't think I ate anything weird?"

Over the next week or so, Debbie kept throwing, so while Nolan was at work, she went to a pharmacy and reluctantly bought a pregnancy test. The rest of the drive home was anxious. She and Nolan had not prepared for children, and this was a total accident. When she got home, she went to the bathroom and took the test with a sigh.

"Here goes nothing," Debbie said with a spark of nervousness.

When she was done, she waited for the test to give her the results. As she waited, she was pacing back and forth in her bedroom. Her heart rate was through the roof in anticipation. Finally, after the five minutes required for the test results to come back, it tested positive. Debbie saw the test, and while she was not prepared for the result, she was still ecstatic. She could not wait to tell her husband. Nolan was at work, doing some last-minute touches on his novel, when he got a text from Debbie.

"Hey, when you get home, I have some news," said Debbie

Confused, Nolan wrote back.

"What is it?" said Nolan

"It is better if I tell you in person," said Debbie

Nolan responded with a thumbs up with a simple thumbs up emoji. He finally finished his novel and then went home. He opened the door and went to speak with Debbie.

"Debbie, I'm home. What did you want to tell me?" said Nolan

Debbie then came through the house,

"Nolan, I'm pregnant," said Debbie.

In his excitement, Nolan grabbed his wife in a hug.

"I can't believe it, I'm gonna be a dad," he said.

Nine months later, Debbie gave birth to their son, whom they decided to name Mark. About three months after he was born, Nolan suggested moving to Japan. Neither had any family, and the family that they did have disowned them for being quirkless. Japan was at least more tolerable, and because they were both quirkless, there was a large chance that their son would be too. Nolan was also a travel writer, as well as being a fiction writer, so he had been there before. He was also fluent in Japanese because he had been there so long before he married Debbie. Mark became a very jubilent boy, constanly a smile on his face, laughing at everything from poop jokes to snot rockets.

Mark POV:

Years later, in Musutafu, Japan, at an elementary school, I befriended Katsuki Bakugo and Izuku Midoriya. Eventually. Bakugo developed his quirk, and Izuku ended up quirkless. Seeing as Mark was a little younger he wouldn't manifest a quirk until a little later, but that didn't stop katsuki from being an absolute ass to Izuku and I. For months, he would brag about how his quirk was so much better than ours.

"Wow, Kacchan, your quirk is so cool, I wish mine would be as cool as yours when I get it," said Izuku.

To which Bakugo responded with, "You can try as much as you want, Deku, you will never be as great as me!"

I had hoped that I would get a quirk, but my parents knew that it was unlikely, so they prepared me for the possibility that it wouldn't happen.

"You don't know, his quirk might be really cool too," said Mark.

"Whatever extra, I will be the best, better than all might one day!" said Bakugo

"Whatever," Mark said

Later that night, my parents and I went out to eat at a fairly nice restaurant. Their family was not rich, but they weren't poor either. Nolan had decent success with his writing career, so they could afford to go out on occasion. It was a sushi place that had pretty good reviews called Umami Sashimi, and Mark loved it.

"Dad, I want to come here all the time. This food is the best!" said Mark.

"Sure, son, why not, my boy," said Nolan

"Just make sure you keep doing well in school, then we can keep coming here all you like," said Debbie

"Okay, Mom, I will, I promise!" He enthusiastically.

After everyone was done eating, Dad paid the bill, and we left. As we headed home, it was late, about 9:00. For a four-year-old, that is pretty late. I begged my parents to take the shortest possible route. We had walked there because it wasn't far from our home. Because of that, we took the back alleys and we moved quickly. Then, behind us, we heard someone.

"Turn around, give me the wallet and phone! NOW!" said the thug

From what we gathered, he had a quirk that could shoot spikes from his hands. But even though my dad was quirk-less, He still stood up to him.

"Get behind me," Nolan said with a firm tone.

Mom and I did what we were told out of fear. But my dad stood tall even though he had no power, and still stood tall.

"You will not go near my family!" Nolan shouted.

And in a cold, cruel voice, He responded, "So be it."

And he fired. The world stood still like the spike was in slow motion, but I couldn't move, locked as if I were trapped in the chains of my fear. He hit my dad in the shoulder, knocking him to the ground.

"RRRUUU--" my dad tried to shout before he was cut off by a spike being shot through his eye.

THUMP

The sound reverberated through my ears. The sight burned into my brain like cattle being branded. My mother was still holding me, trying to run, when another spike was fired through the back of her head. It shot through the front of her mouth. Teeth and blood spilled out as she fell.

With both my parents dead, the shooter walked to me slowly enough for me to run, but I was still locked in fear. Every step he took was another step closer to my death. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest like a racehorse. When he finally reached me, he picked me up by the collar, and as he was about to take his final shot against me, in a last-ditch effort, my quirk unknowingly manifested. As I tried to punch him, his head exploded before my eyes. We were both suspended there for a moment before he finally collapsed. I lay there with his corpse on top of me and my hand in front of my face. Bits of his brain were still on me. I was so in shock I couldn't even cry. Hours later, a cop on patrol found me alone in the alley. Police arrived and tried to ask me a few questions, but I didn't say anything, I couldn't say anything, I was still in shock. As the night went on, a detective came up to me and introduced himself.

"Hello, my name is Naomasa Tsukauchi. What's your name?" Tsukauchi said.

"Mark," I said weepily.

"ok, Mark ... well, you are going to be staying with me until we can find a suitable home for you, ok? I will try to make you feel comfortable at my home." Tsukauchi said.

After a few days, Tsukauchi started playing a card game called solitaire, although I had played the game, so I didn't know that at the time. I walked behind him and watched. When he noticed me, He didn't say anything, he just let me watch. Eventually, I asked him what he was playing.

"What are you playing?" I said

"Solitaire. Do you want to learn how to play?" Tsukauchi said.

"Sure," I said

We bonded over the next few days through various card games. Spades, poker, rummy, you name it, we played it. We played in silence for a while, other than asking questions on how to play. The weeks went by, and we bonded more and more. Eventually, I started to laugh again, even if it was just a chuckle.

Soon, I went back to school after the police report was released. Tukauchi altered the police report so that my father had killed the thief in a final effort to save his family before he succumbed to his injuries, so no charges were brought against me. However, people knew what happened, but Bakugo said nothing. he didn't insult me like usual or call me an extra. He came up to me after class one day.

"Hey!" he said

"I'm sorry for what happened. Ok. Now don't tell anyone I said anything!" he said in his usual angry voice.

Everyone pretty much left me alone. Izuku would still talk to me, but after the incident with my parents, I wasn't the same. I wasn't very conversational, but in that moment, it wasn't in grief. I wasn't thinking about what happened to my parents all the time. Instead, I was thinking about what I would do with my life. I had grown up fast, and all I could think about was the promise I was making to myself.

"I don't want what happened to me to happen to anyone else. I know what it's like to lose everything, and no one deserves that. I will be a hero so that never happens to anyone! I have to atone for what I have done." Mark thought.

Across the field, a monitor was playing All Might, making a save with a smile on his face.

"I AM HERE," he said.

There was a building collapsing, and he was holding it up with pure strength. I had always admired All Might through it all, every battle, every villain, he always had a smile on his face. He is who I aspired to be. He is someone I have always admired.

9 years later

I had just turned 13, and my quirk had developed quite nicely. It was a very powerful strength enhancement quirk. I could easily lift a garbage truck with ease. I was also very durable, which made sense to me because my body wouldn't be able to withstand its strength without that durability. I was still friends with Izuku went to each other's houses all the time to play video games or other random activities. I still lived with the detective, and he decided to adopt me over the years. We had grown close, and I also wouldn't go anywhere else as a kid. I didn't really trust anyone. While I was still friends with Izuku, my grades were good enough to get into a private middle school on scholarship. (So there is room for the character development for Bakugo and Izuku.) I still had one more year of school.

Author's note: This is my first fan fic, and it's hard to come up with original character names. Nolan and Debbie are just the names of Mark's parents from the Invincible show. I was always tired of people doing Superman stories and using Clark Kent's name. I wanted to change things up and do a little merging. There will be no intergalactic threat. The only threats in this fanfic will be the threats based on My Hero Academia and a handful of villains/heroes from Invincible. He will still be one of the top students in terms of power. Also, Mark will be replacing Minneta. I hate his character. Also, the main character will have the same powers and scaling (eventually) as a Kryptonian. However, there will be mental blocks that keep him on par with the rest of his class, at least relatively. (because of his trauma) at least until the "locks" break. Because of this, all might will still be the benchmark for power in the beginning. Also, like other Kryptonians, he will unlock more powers as time passes. So don't be disappointed about his powers right now. he will get more, this is entirely so that there is actual conflict in the story, so it's not boring. This is also one of my longer chapters.
