Chapter Eight: Awakening in the Hunt
Rina's world exploded in a frenzy of sounds — growls, shouts, the clash of steel. The scent of earth and blood filled her nostrils as adrenaline pushed her beyond fear.
She didn't think — she acted.
Her hands lashed out, catching Varek off guard. Pain seared her palm where his claws scraped her skin, but she refused to yield. Something fierce and raw surged inside her, guiding her movements with precision and strength she never knew she had.
Kael was beside her instantly, powerful and protective, his body a shield. His golden eyes blazed with pride and something deeper — awe.
"Good," he growled low in her ear. "Fight for us."
Together, they moved as one — predator and mate.
Varek snarled, attempting to separate them, but the pack pressed forward, cutting off his retreat.
Rina felt a strange heat in her chest — the bond flaring like wildfire. Her vision blurred briefly, then sharpened with clarity. The world slowed, sounds dimmed except for Kael's steady heartbeat in her ear.
A sudden strength lifted her from exhaustion. She blocked another strike, then countered with a sweep of her leg, knocking Varek to the ground.
Before he could recover, Kael was on him — teeth bared, claws ready. But Rina didn't step back.
"No," she whispered fiercely. "Let me finish this."
Kael hesitated, respect flashing in his eyes. He trusted her.
With a final roar, Rina lunged, pushing Varek back.
The rogue scrambled, defeated but alive, snarling venomous promises.
"You haven't seen the last of me," he hissed before retreating into the shadows.
The pack erupted into victorious howls.
Kael pulled Rina close, wrapping her in strong arms. His golden eyes searched hers, tender and fierce all at once.
"You were incredible."
Rina leaned into him, breathless but triumphant.
"I'm yours," she whispered.
"Always," Kael promised.
