Within a room without a speck of dirt, doctors and nurses were scuffling around in a hurry. They wore black gowns and black masks, and on their hand's black gloves.
In one of the beds a woman was sweating bullets and gripping at the sheets as she started to hyperventilate.
"AGH, it hurts, it hurts" the women screamed in agony, squirming in the bed.
A man beside her was dabbing a cool wet cloth and her forehead. Brushing the blond hairs matted to her forehead behind her ears.
"Hang in their Melissa, you are almost there." the man encouraged.
Melissa gripped his hand trying to find some relieve from the pain, a distraction from its clutches.
"Oh John, I"
Melissa winced in pain, gritting her teeth
"Love you so much"
A doctor walked in and noted the pain Melissa was in.
"Leo, administer .7 ccs of Lavola Extract, Mrs. Melissa gives us one moment the pain will reside any minute now." The doctor smiled at the couple
"Thank you, Doctor Smith" John grabbed the doctors hand expressing his gratitude. Doctor Smith on the other hand developed a slight tick in his eye realizing he will need to change gloves but maintained his cordial smile.
"Just doing our job" Doctor Smith replied to John.
Leo walked to the cabinet and grabbed a purple plant, before squeezing juices into syringe until it reached the required dosages. Before walking up to Melissa's side opposite of John.
Leo brought the syringe up to his eyes checking for air bubbles before flicking the tip with his gloved hand. He then brought the syringe down to her arm, the needle pressing against the deltoid muscle. With little force Leo pierced through the skin and into the muscle. Before injecting the Lavola Extract into her.
"Any second now Mrs. Melissa, the Lavola Extract will start to take effect." Leo said with his practiced smile.
Melissa's face started to soften as her body started to relax as the radiating pain coming from her stomach became a slight buzz only slightly worse than stubbing your toe.
"Thanks Leo" Melissa said with her radiant smile, before her face changed and her brows furrowed.
"I, I feel it coming" Melissa exclaimed loudly.
Doctor Smith moved to the end of the bed.
"Push Melissa" Doctor Smith Encouraged.
"You can do it dear" John encouraged by her side, rubbing the palm of her hand with his thumb.
Beads of sweat glistening with intensity dripped down her face as gritted her teeth and pushed with all her might.
Despite all the effort it didn't come out yet. Melissa stopped pushing and panted like a dog.
"Deep breathes Melissa, once you are ready start pushing" Doctor Smith ordered
Melissa nodded
"Ready" Melissa said as she started pushing again.
Time passed slowly, the first hour then the second. The battle of contractions raged on with a blistering intensity.
"Push dear, you are almost there" John encouraged in his raspy voice, apparent he hasn't had a drink in quite a while during this stressful experience.
Melissa nodded weakly to the words of encouragement; her body weary, and with sunken eyes she pushed.
Melissa's grunting could be heard as she strained herself and forced herself to go against the urge to stop pushing.
"Keep pushing, I see the head!" Doctor Smith hollered, moving his hands with practiced precision to the labia helping guide the baby out of the vaginal walls slowly.
Melissa let a gasp of relief, as if the boulder sitting on her chest was no longer sitting obstinately atop of her.
Leo grabbed the baby and wiped the blood and uterine fluids off of it. before disposing of said towel and wrapping a new one around the newborn.
"Here Mrs. Melissa, it's a boy." Leo smiled with small circles under his eyes.
Melissa took the baby into her arms making a cradle for him. Looking into his black eyes Melissa thought
'It was worth all the pain in the world to give birth to you'
Melissa smiled brilliantly like dazzling stars in the night sky, staring into his eyes. As the infant boys' black beady eyes stared back unflinchingly.
"He has your beautiful black hair and eyes" Melissa said to her husband
"Yes, he does, but don't forget that he has your nose dear." John replied.
Doctor Smith placed his hand over her abdomen. Activating his mana circuits and injecting a wave of healing magic toward the damage area.
The effect was immediate, the damaged tissue from the effort Mellisa put in her pushing, and the sore condition of her body was immediately healed with almost no pain left afterwards.
"So much better, it no longer hurts" Melissa contently said examining her new condition.
"Doctor Smith, quick question? If you could have used healing magic, why did you not despite the pain my wife was feeling?" John asked out of curiosity.
"Well think about it, healing magic returns things to how they are naturally supposed to be. As the baby was being pushed out it was naturally tearing tissue to get out. So, suppose if I do heal while Melissa was pushing, all that healing would have done was healed the immediate pain but revert the damaged tissue to its original state, forcing Melissa to start pushing from the beginning again causing more pain than good." Doctor Smith replied while flipping through Melissa's medical chart.
"Doctor, one last thing. Is it natural for a baby to not cry after birth, I thought they usually did?" John asked out of concern for his baby boy's health.
Doctor Smith has a weird glint in his eye as he grabbed the baby and cast a detection spell on his body.
"There is nothing wrong with the baby's body. And, although it is rare, some babies do not cry after birth. These babies generally grow up to be big and strong. Congratulations!" Doctor Smith replied with a smile smothering the parents' concerns.
"Ah John what should we name our little boy?" Melissa looked at her husband lovingly.
"What about Rin, Rin Waller" John suggested to his wife.
"I love it" Melissa said
She moved her hand to her Rin's face gently caressing.
"My baby boy, Rin" Melissa said affectionately to her first child.
Melissa gave Rin to John and got up from the bed. Before taking baby Rin back into her motherly embrace.
"Thank you for the hospitality, Doctor Smith, And Lou. Thank you for all your help today." Both husband and wife said to the people who helped their baby boy come to be.
"Like I said before, just doing our job." Doctor Smith Replied smilingly.
The couple expressed their thanks once more before leaving the hospital's doors and heading back home.
"Tsk, why do we have to lower ourselves to treating such lowly peasant"
Lou said in an arrogant tone to Doctor Smith.
"Lou I've said this before. The imperial family has made a royal decree of free healthcare to all residents in matters of childbirth regardless of social status. Besides, we are doctors, we exist treat people and status should not be a restriction of who we treat."
Doctor Smith said disappointingly to Lou.
Lou harumphed at Doctor Smith's comment
"Still their filth makes our hospital look bad, absolutely revolting they are."
Lou said making a mock gagging gesture.
Doctor Smith looked at Lou with a piercing gaze.
"Put your prejudice behind you for now, we have more patients." Doctor Smith said while eyeing another couple who just walked through the hospital doors.
Doctor Smith and Lou got to work with the new couple, forgetting everything about the patients they just treated.
While the couple they just treated were walking home through the dilapidated streets, talking about how strong their little Rin is.
They entered their home. The Waller family, now one member more. Unaware of the undulating currents that are surrounding Rin's supposed 'strength'. Unaware of its dangers, and how it will inevitably split the family apart one way or another.
