Chapter 2 - The Sacred Weight

Kevin nodded his head and said, "Before I tell you about your task, I want to tell you a story."

"The one in the novel?" I asked.

Shaking his head in denial, Kevin replied, "No, it's something different. As for the novel's story, I will tell you after I finish this story first."

"Which 'story?' And what's that have to have any action with this? I mean, the novel."

Suddenly, a huge double pan weighing balance formed behind Kevin. No, it was fucking huge, like a double storey building.

"What the fuck is that! Are you trying to kill me?!" I exclaimed in horror.

Kevin snorted, "Stop overreacting. You are already dead."

"I know! But I am a human! Not some talking squirrel, who's on a 'corporate' job!"

"Fuck you! Can't you stop mocking me? You are making me angry!" yelled Kevin.

I raised my hands in surrender. "Fine. I am sorry. So, can you please tell me why am I seeing a giant double pan weighing balance?"

Kevin said, "It's not what you are thinking it as. This thing behind me is called, 'Weight of Life and Death.' It's sacred. My boss is its owner. And by this, I mean, he is the only owner. No partnership. Nothing."

"So, why do you have this 'sacred' thing? Did you steal it?" I asked him.

Kevin squeaked, "NO! I HAVEN'T STOLE IT! MY BOSS GAVE IT TO ME! I PROMISE!"

I narrowed my eyes at him, giving him a scrutinizing look. I asked, "Are you sure?"

"YES! I AM HUNDRED PERCENT SURE!"

I nodded, "Well, if you say so."

Kevin took a deep breath and calmed himself down. The poor was squirrel was literally shivering in fear. Oh, I am sure his boss is bound to be one scary fellow.

Kevin rubbed his head with his 'cute' paws. With a tired sigh, he said, "Ah, I shouldn't have underestimated you. Playing tricks on a divine being, really? It seems my boss is right. No! My boss is always right," he gave me a scrutinizing look, "I am going to punish you for this."

Huh? What did I do? And why is he looking at me with this much vigilance? It was as if I would attack him or something. Ok, this is weird. Wait, isn't this what usually happens with me? Whenever something unexpected happens, my 'enemies' give me this kind of 'pointed' look.

"Kevin, can we continue?"

He hissed, "Hah! Impatient, aren't we? You must fear me, right? Well, let's continue. This sacred weight signifies the balance of life and death. I am sure you must have inferred this much from its name. It's proscribed to alter this weight in any particular direction."

I said, "So, the balance is disrupted, isn't it? And you need me to rectify it. Am I right?"

"I am impressed by your quick thinking. Like you said, the balance is disrupted. There are more dead souls than we can handle."

"More dead souls mean, your workload... must be quite heavy."

"It's choleric! It's fucking dolorous to think a superior person like me, acting as a 'guide' to dead souls. And my boss rarely gives me a holiday," Kevin sighed heavily.

Is he going to tell me his backstory?

He continued, "As much as I would like to continue talking about my problems, I must focus back on the topic. Look, carefully the left pan of the sacred weight."

The left pan was almost touching the ground, while the right pan was almost touching the heaven.

"Your left pan is going to touch the ground," I said.

"Yes! And that's the problem we are facing. The left pan contains dead souls. Just by having a single look at it, will tell you, our problem."

I answered, "Judging of dead souls. You can't judge these many souls at once."

Kevin clasped his hands and jumped on his chair. "Yes! We can't judge properly. This is upsetting the balance of nature in more than one way. Life and death should have a balance. A fucking proper balance! These mortals are hellbent on disrupting this balance. Their reckless actions are going to destroy the sacred weight."

"What will happen if the sacred weight gets destroyed?" I asked. Ah, I am dreading to hear the answer.

With an ominous tone, Kevin replied, "Everything is gonna be destroyed. There will be no boundary between life and death. First, the boundary is going to get blur... and finally, the boundary will cease to exist. Do you know what will happen if the boundary ceases to exist?
