Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Highway Inferno

Owen Shaw stood atop the mobile command unit, wind whipping across his face as the convoy thundered down the Spanish highway. His black military jacket fluttered like a war banner, eyes locked on the tactical displays being updated by the second.

To his left, Vegh adjusted the comms channel, relaying the latest perimeter sweep. To his right, Klaus prepped the vehicle-mounted cannon. This wasn't just a heist this was a message.

A tank.

A goddamn tank.

Owen grinned to himself. "Overkill is a myth."

His voice cracked across the team's comms."Activate secondary assault unit. Wipe out all patrols. Letty, you're on retrieval."

A few miles ahead, Letty slammed the throttle on her bike, weaving through traffic with surgical control. Her eyes stayed locked on the transport truck ahead the one carrying the guidance chip Cipher had promised was vital.

Letty didn't ask questions. She didn't need to. Her past was a blur, her future uncertain. But Owen had given her structure. Purpose. Something Dom's world never gave her.

The rear doors of the truck blew open, and Shaw's team sprang into action.

A rapid-fire takedown commenced. Spike strips. EMP bursts. Unmarked SUVs ramming civilian police off the road. Chaos.

And then it came the tank.

Shaw's ace in the hole. It burst from the trailer like a beast, crushing asphalt and flipping cars like toys.

Panic gripped the highway. Civilians fled. Sirens wailed in the distance.

Owen Shaw's voice was ice-cold in Letty's earpiece.

"Bring the tank into the open. We own this road now."

Letty's reply was brief. "Copy."

The tank surged forward, Klaus operating it with brutal precision. Cars exploded. Police units were flattened. It was raw power and complete domination.

From his mobile HQ, Shaw watched through drone footage."We're almost there. The chip is inside the vault vehicle two klicks ahead."

But just then, another voice crackled on the comms. Dom's crew.

Roman. Tej. Han. Brian. And Dom himself.

Shaw scowled.

"They're back. Persistent."

He turned to Vegh."Engage countermeasures. Kill the bridge if you have to."

The team moved fast — but Dom's crew was faster.

Brian and Roman maneuvered to box in the tank. Tej hacked a construction grid, triggering barriers to close off escape routes.

Letty jumped off her bike and landed atop the tank. She moved to assist Klaus — but then saw Dom speeding straight for her.

Their eyes met.

Something in her chest trembled.

"Letty! Get off that tank!" Dom shouted, swerving dangerously close.

"I don't know you!" she shouted back.

The moment cracked as Roman and Brian used steel cables to tether the tank's treads. It stumbled. Lost control.

Shaw watched, jaw tightening.

"Detonate the failsafe," he ordered. "We're not losing this chip."

But before his crew could react, Dom launched himself from his car across the destroyed bridge — catching Letty mid-air as the tank flipped end-over-end behind them in a blazing fireball.

Dom and Letty landed hard on a windshield.

Owen's teeth clenched.

"Pull back. Regroup."

Nightfall. Spanish Airfield.

Owen's final extraction plan was already in motion.

A massive Antonov AN-124 transport plane roared down the runway. Inside, the vault holding the chip was secured. The crew was boarding. Vegh checked systems. Klaus mounted the minigun.

Letty followed silently, eyes cloudy with doubt.

Shaw turned to her. "You hesitate again, I leave you behind."

She didn't respond.

Engines thundered. The cargo bay ramp stayed down — the plan was simple: taxi down the runway long enough to load, then lift off and vanish.

Then came the ambush.

Dom's team attacked from both ends. Vehicles screamed down the tarmac. Explosions rocked the asphalt.

Brian and Roman boarded the plane mid-takeoff. Han and Gisele followed.

The gunfight inside was brutal. Tej and Hobbs forced entry through the side hatch. Klaus held the ramp, firing rounds into the darkness.

Vegh tried to pull the plane into the air.

But the runway wasn't long enough.

Dom and Brian fought their way through the cargo hold. The chip was close — secured in a magnetic crate. Shaw grabbed it and moved to escape, but Hobbs caught him at the edge.

They traded blows — tactical, brutal, efficient.

Outside, Letty stood on the ramp. Gisele was hanging on — about to be thrown off. Han reached out for her—

And then she let go.

Han screamed. The plane shook.

Inside, Dom made the call. "Get out now!"

Shaw looked at Letty. "You're with me. Let's finish this."

Letty hesitated. Just long enough.

Dom pulled the cables. The car attached to the anchor dropped out of the plane, yanking the team with it.

Boom.

Fire. Screams. A chain reaction.

The plane ignited mid-air. The shockwave thundered across the sky.

Devon watched from a distant satellite feed, arms crossed.

"Goodbye, Owen," he said quietly.

But the feed stuttered.

ALERT: Body not confirmed. Signal interference.

Shaw had survived worse. And Devon knew better than to assume.
