Chapter 3 - Act 1 (2)

It finally stopped raining and about 1 Hour before the presumable boyfriend of Bomi showed up.

He was talking and was a serious looker no wonder she trash talks me.

Well... Confidence on looks are of no concern to me. As long as I don't lose confidence in cricket anything is fine.

And so after the rain stopped I started running back home.

...

Wow, can't even reach halfway through... It's already half past 10. And, I still have 5 Kms to walk.

Which will atleast take another hour.

I called my sister who was really worried about me and told her that everything was fine.

I told my parents it'll take another hour to reach home and they said it was fine.

I used my bus money into buying a snack because running 10 Kms wasn't advisable with an empty stomach.

And now I don't even have the money to go back. How annoying...

Did All that only to see her walk home with a tall handsome man...

Life is a funny thing isn't it.

...

Haa... Finally got back home. I'm definately taking a day off tomorrow.

...

I should do some batting practice.

Hitting a ball 1000 times is my goal. I even bought a bowling machine on a loan.

Cost me 12,00,000 Won. Paying on installments.

1,00,000 Won per Month.

It's weird getting used to the currency here and the way of life.

I get around 5 Million won every for playing in the tournament and the prize for winning the tournament is 150 Million Won.

So I'll get around 10 Million won if our team won.

The runner's up prize is 100 Million Won and the 3rd position prize is 50 Million Won.

Ending up in the top 3 will guarantee me atleast 7 Million in total.

But than again .. it's a team game and I don't know how my team performs.

I'll give them tips and tricks on how to bat and bowl since I'm a veteran but them taking the information at face value is of utmost Importance.

I stood on the pitch I created in the playing ground in the small garden in our house.

As I set up my stance and the ball came at me.

It was a good length ball, on the top of off. I defended it and it hit the middle.

I was in good rhythm I thought.

The next one pitched on middle and leg and swung outside the off stump.

I missed it completely and might have taken the edge.

Well... It did take the edge. I have a weakness there.

I don't really understand if I should defend it or leave it.

It's hard to judge that particular ball and I always end up second guessing.

I either get clean bold or end up nicking it. It's a real pain in the ass.

I realised how hard it is to judge it.

I take the aggressive option and... I sometimes hit sixes but sometimes end up not hitting it well and get catch out.

This weakness... I really have to do something about it.

If not, I'll have a disastrous Tournament.

...

Aah... I'm exhausted, after facing more than 200 balls after setting the same line and length.

I managed to do better than all the other times.

I hit 70 of them while nicking 79, leaving 27 Successfully and Bring clean bold 24 times.

A total of 209 balls faced and a good result with atleast 50% going in my favour..

Not to mention out of the 70 hits I defended 50 perfectly and got 20 Lofted shots right.

I should learn more on how to place the ball better but that can only be learnt with actual Matches and not this practice.

On other lengths I didn't have a problem.

My strength was probably the slot and length balls, for now I don't have a proper shot for a short ball.

There are different lengths in cricket. These lengths are where the ball should pitch when the bowler balls.

The pitch is about 22 yards.

The pitch is divided into different layers.

There's the full length, the Good length and the Short length.

Let's disect these Lengths.

First we talk about The closest length from the batsman. Starting with a Yorker.

A Yorker is a length right below the batsman's toes.

If you land it on a batsman's toes it's very hard for him to get it away.

Than comes the full length, Half volley or the Slot ball.

It's the easiest ball for a batsman, because it's a place where connecting with the ball at the sweet spot is easiest.

Sweet spot means it's middle.

The middle of the bat isn't literally the middle of it but in between the end of the sponsors sticker and the end of the bat.

It hits Anywhere else on the bat and it's a Lofted shots 9 out of 10 times you are out.

And once you are out in a match you don't get a 2nd chance, That's it.

Than comes the good length. This length is the hardest to play against, below a Short ball's difficulty.

If there's swing on offer, it's the deadliest ball in cricket and 8 times out of 10 if you make just 1 Mistake and you are done for.

So technically a Good length ball is the hardest to play against.

It's also my weakness. Good length hitting the top of off.

If there's swing on offer you know I won't play well.

Anyway, after that comes the short ball.

There two types of short balls, 1 is a short ball and the other is a bouncer.

One is easier to play against while the other is very hard.

Let me make it easier for you to understand.

A Short of a length ball is a ball that after pitching on the ground reached about Waist to shoulder height.

Depending on the bounce the pitch offers, it's either lethal or it's a hit me ball basically.

If there's bounce on offer, it'll reach about shoulder height which will make it hard to pull away because of the pace.

But, if it reaches about Waist height that means there's no pace on it nor is there any Bounce on it making it a hit me ball.

Especially since there's only 1 fielder inside the circle at that moment and its usually a strong side for right hand batsman because you can gather some force while hitting at deep mid wicket and deep square leg than playing an inside out shot between deep cover and deep extra cover.

(look through fielding positions on Google)

Than comes the short ball Or bouncer, It's a ball that'll definately reach Shoulder height after pitching relatively further than The Short of a length ball.

It's either reaching shoulder height at a pace or reaching straight for your face or going above it.

If the ball goes above the batsman's head 1 run is awarded to the batting team.

That 1 run is called a Wide.

Well that's about it when it comes to bowling lengths.
