Chapter 15 - Happy for your heart's find

The cafeteria buzzed with the usual lunch rush, but Lila barely touched her food. Her phone vibrated against the table, flashing a new email notification. Curious, she opened it — it was from Nico.

I want you to meet someone tonight. It's important.

A mixture of excitement and curiosity filled her chest. Who could it be?

That evening, dressed in a casual but cute outfit, Lila headed to the cozy little restaurant Nico had chosen. The moment she stepped inside, she spotted him — and next to him stood a woman with warm hazel eyes and a bright smile.

Lila's breath caught. "Lana?" she gasped, her face lighting up.

The woman let out a delighted squeal. "Oh my God, Lila! After all these years!"

Nico looked between them, clearly surprised. "Wait, you two know each other?"

Lana laughed, linking arms with Lila like no time had passed. "Obviously! We were super close in high school — practically inseparable."

Lila beamed. "It's so good to see you again! You look amazing, Lana."

They quickly fell into easy conversation, sharing memories, inside jokes, and plenty of laughter over dinner. It felt like picking up a thread that had never been broken.

In the middle of their meal, Nico suddenly cleared his throat, looking almost nervous. He took Lana's hand in his. "By the way... Lana is my girlfriend."

Lila's eyes widened in surprise — and then she clapped her hands in pure joy. "Wow, that's incredible! She's amazing, Nico! You picked the best! I guess this means I have a sister now — Hurray!" she cheered, raising her glass. "I'm so happy for your heart's find!"

Lana smiled warmly and leaned over to hug Lila. "Thanks, sister-in-law," she teased, making all three of them laugh even harder.

Later that night, as Lila walked home, her heart still warm from the reunion, she felt a familiar presence behind her.

Strong arms wrapped around her from behind, and a deep voice murmured near her ear, "Miss me?"

She laughed, turning into Astor's embrace. "Babe! I missed you so much." She stood on tiptoe to kiss his cheek. "And guess what? Nico found a girlfriend — and it's Lana! My close friend from high school! I'm so happy for him!"

As they walked down the dimly lit street, Astor tugged her closer, his arm sliding possessively around her waist.

"You haven't said you're happy for my heart's find," he whispered, a teasing edge in his voice.

Lila laughed, her fingers threading through his. "You're the best thing my heart could ever find," she said softly.

Hand in hand, with the city lights glowing around them, they continued walking into the night, their hearts a little lighter, a little more intertwined.

Astor smirked and leaned down to press a slow, lingering kiss to her forehead.

They walked on in comfortable silence, the city's lights shimmering around them, painting their path in gold and silver.

The chill of the night air brushed against Lila's skin, but she felt nothing but warmth. Not just from Astor's touch — but from the realization blossoming inside her.

For so long, her life had been filled with uncertainty — losing her home, quitting her job, stepping into a world that felt far bigger and darker than she could handle. She had questioned herself, doubted her choices, wondered if she would ever belong anywhere again.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, she had found pieces of herself again — in an old friendship rekindled, in Nico's happiness, in the arms of a man who, despite all the darkness surrounding them, made her feel seen and wanted.

She wasn't alone anymore. She wasn't lost.

She had a family. She had love. She had hope.

And maybe, just maybe, this was only the beginning of the life she was meant to live — a life woven from the broken parts of her past and stitched together with new dreams, new bonds, and a love that refused to let her go.

As they walked deeper into the night, Lila held Astor's hand a little tighter, her heart whispering a silent promise:

No matter what storms came their way, she would fight for this — for them — for herself.

And for the first time in a long, long time, she truly believed she could.

The soft glow of the streetlamps stretched their shadows along the pavement, weaving them together into a single shape, as if even the night itself refused to separate them. The hum of the city faded into the background — a distant symphony — leaving only the quiet rhythm of their footsteps and the steady beating of her heart.

Astor's thumb brushed slow, comforting circles over the back of her hand, wordlessly grounding her. He didn't say much — he never needed to. His presence spoke louder than words ever could. In him, she found something solid, something she had craved all her life but never dared to hope for: a home.

The memories of the past few months floated through her mind — the chaos, the heartbreak, the loneliness that had once swallowed her whole. The days when it felt like the world had forgotten her. She had fought so hard just to survive, to stand tall when everything around her tried to drag her down.

Now, she was learning there was more to life than just survival.

There was laughter.

There was a connection.

There was love — raw, imperfect, but real.

She glanced up at Astor, studying the fierce line of his jaw, the protective glint in his eyes whenever he looked at her. She saw it now, clearer than ever before: beneath his rough edges and dark past, he loved her. Maybe not in the way fairy tales described — soft and sweet and easy — but in a way that was wild and consuming and unbreakable.

And she loved him too. Even if it terrified her. Even if it meant handing over the fragile pieces of her heart and trusting he would hold them carefully.

The realization settled into her bones like a secret she could no longer deny.

They reached the corner of her street, where the world seemed to slow down, the night stretching endless and open before them. Astor stopped, pulling her gently to face him. The golden pools of the streetlights bathed him in a soft halo, making him look almost otherworldly — fierce and tender, all at once.

He cupped her face in his hands, his touch reverent, like she was something precious. His forehead pressed against hers, and for a long moment, they simply breathed each other in.

"I'm not going anywhere," he murmured, voice low and rough. "Not now. Not ever."

Tears burned at the corners of her eyes — not from sadness, but from a deep, aching happiness she hadn't known she could feel.

"I know," she whispered back, her voice trembling with emotion. "And neither am I."

The future was uncertain. Danger still lurked in the shadows — she could feel it, could taste the tension that sometimes clung to Astor's silences. She knew there were battles ahead, dark chapters yet to unfold.

But tonight, she allowed herself to believe in the beauty of now.

In the strength of the bond they were forging.

In the promise that whatever came, they would face it together.

Hand in hand, soul to soul.

They stood there a little longer, wrapped up in each other, letting the city spin on without them. And when they finally pulled away, it was only to walk forward — side by side — into a future neither of them could yet see, but both were ready to fight for.

Lila smiled up at the stars scattered across the velvet sky, feeling small and infinite all at once.

Home isn't a place, she realized.

It's a person.

And she had finally found hers
