"Thank you, Caiden," Sofia said as he opened the passenger door and offered his hand to help her out. His grip was firm but respectful, the gesture smooth and practiced—like everything else he'd done since the moment he appeared at her doorstep.
She wanted to be mad at him—furious, even. For being so frustratingly loyal to his boss. For ignoring her requests. For not dropping her off at the bus stop like she asked.
But still... he had shielded her. Protected her. And for that, she couldn't quite summon the venom she wanted to spit. So instead, she gave him a tight smile, suppressing the urge to roll her eyes.
"I appreciate the help, even if you're impossible."
Caiden gave a small, unreadable smile. "You're welcome, Miss Everhart. We'll be here on standby until you're finished for the day."
Her eyes widened, and she whipped her head toward him. "A what?"
"Standby. As in, we'll be nearby," he said calmly as if that was the most normal thing in the world. "Security protocol."
