Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO: Whispers in the Smoke

After church, Alexander and Jason were walking home, talking about nothing special—until they overheard some cops speaking nearby.

Alexander froze. His eyes narrowed. Jason tilted his head.

ALEXANDER:

A demon?

JASON:

Demons? Impossible. Why would a demon kill four people for no reason?

ALEXANDER:

Demons don't need a reason. They're pure evil. And this isn't the first. Two weeks ago, I heard about that abandoned factory—the one that got shut down after a hundred people died. Some kids went in there after hours… never came back. Cops found only one of them. Dead. Strangled. Looked like his soul was drained.

JASON:

You've gotta stop lying, Alex.

ALEXANDER:

I'm not lying. It was all over the news. And don't forget—I know some of the cops. You can check the factory yourself.

JASON:

Okay, okay. I believe you… I just hope none of this reaches us.

ALEXANDER:

Yeah. Let's just get home. Venessa should be back by now.

But when they got to the house, the front door was open.

Alexander's heart dropped.

Both brothers ran inside—fists clenched, adrenaline spiking.

Their worst fears waited inside.

Venessa and the other sisters lay unconscious on the floor.

And their mom? Floating midair. Choking. Invisible hands wrapped around her throat.

Alexander rushed forward to grab her—but something slammed him across the room like a ragdoll.

Unseen.

Jason panicked, throwing everything he could at the air. Plates. Bottles. Books.

Nothing worked.

Until—he remembered the holy water they brought back from church.

He hurled it.

It shattered.

And the air caught fire.

The creature became visible.

A demon.

A hideous, tentacled beast, wrapping around their mom and draining the life from their sisters.

Alexander rose with rage in his blood.

He grabbed a knife.

Slashed off one of the tentacles.

Stabbed it into the demon's head.

It screamed—a sound that shattered windows across the block.

The demon regenerated fast. Reached again.

Jason cut the next tentacle mid-air.

Alexander used the opening. One last strike—straight into the skull.

The demon shrieked.

Then it vanished—taking their mom with it.

Alexander ran after it.

Chased it all the way to the old factory.

But lost it near the edge of the shadows.

When he returned home, cops and ambulances were everywhere. Jason was in cuffs.

Before Alexander could even speak, he was tackled to the ground.

COP 1:

You're under arrest for the attempted murder of your family.

ALEXANDER:

What?! We didn't try to kill anyone! It was a demon—it took our mom!

COP 2:

Demons? You're outta your mind.

ALEXANDER:

Ask Officer Gedeon! He knows me—he'll believe me!

COP 1:

Gedeon just got released from duty. He's gone. And now? So are you.

They threw them in jail, locked up for the night.

But that night?

Gedeon returned.

Their friend.

The only cop who believed them.

He broke them out without making a sound. Every other cop in the station? Asleep. Like magic—or worse.

They got in his car and sped away.

JASON:

Who are you? What do you want from us?

ALEXANDER:

Chill, bro. He's a friend.

ALEXANDER (to Gedeon):

What happened? Why did you leave the force? What's really going on?

GEDEON:

That's a lot of questions. But first—we run. Because some of those cops? They're not human.

JASON:

Wait… you know about the demons?!

GEDEON:

I know more than you can imagine. And if we stay here, we die. They're already coming.

They didn't make it far before the cops—or rather, the demons pretending to be cops—showed up.

A high-speed chase.

Gedeon leapt out mid-drive and fought them off.

When they reached his warehouse…

The brothers were shook.

Weapons everywhere.

Guns. Grenades. Holy symbols. Vials of glowing water. Things they couldn't name.

ALEXANDER:

Yo, what are you, man… a killer?

JASON:

Tell us who you really are—or we're out.

GEDEON:

You want the truth?

He turned slowly.

Eyes glowing faintly.

GEDEON:

I'm an angel.

ALEXANDER:

You said what now?!

JASON:

You're crazy. Completely nuts.

ALEXANDER:

Prove it. Right now.

GEDEON (looking to the sky):

No time. They're already here.

JASON:

Who's here?

GEDEON:

Demons.
