Key Events in Mary Tudor's Rise to Power

1. Early Disinheritance and Restoration

Mary Tudor, the only surviving child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, was declared illegitimate after her father's divorce from her mother, but later restored to the succession by the Third Succession Act.

2. Death of Edward VI and the Succession Crisis

Upon her half-brother Edward VI's death in 1553, Protestant nobles attempted to bypass Mary by placing Lady Jane Grey on the throne. Jane was proclaimed queen, but her rule lasted only nine days.

3. Mary's Popular Uprising and Triumph

Mary fled to East Anglia, gathered support, and marched on London. The country rallied to her cause, viewing her as the rightful heir. Lady Jane Grey was deposed, and Mary made a triumphant entry into London.

4. Proclamation and Coronation

Mary was proclaimed queen on July 19, 1553, and crowned at Westminster Abbey on October 1, 1553, becoming the first woman to rule England in her own right.

5. Consolidation of Power

Mary's initial popularity was due to her legitimate Tudor claim and her defeat of the attempted usurpation by Jane Grey. However, her efforts to restore Catholicism and her unpopular marriage to Philip II of Spain soon led to unrest and rebellion.
