The soft chime of the clock echoed through the hallways of Arendelle's castle as Ethan walked quietly behind Kai, the royal steward. The man was precise in every movement—sharp turns at corners, subtle gestures to guards and staff, eyes never idle.
"You'll assist me with today's inspections," Kai said, not looking back. "Servants' quarters, pantry inventory, and a few correspondence checks. Keep up."
Ethan adjusted the dark jacket the castle tailor had lent him that morning. It fit surprisingly well.
"Yes, sir," he replied, falling into step.
Though Ethan had faced monsters and life-threatening battles in other worlds, there was something about the castle's pace that was equally daunting. Here, everything had a rhythm—a system. One misstep and you'd look like a fool.
They began in the servants' wing, where Kai observed a footman polishing silver trays.
"Report," Kai said.
"All trays accounted for, sir. Polished, rotated, and ready for the coronation dinner."
Kai nodded, then glanced at Ethan. "See? Precision matters. Ceremony isn't just show—it's structure."
Ethan offered a polite nod. He was beginning to understand the weight of court life: appearances meant everything here, but beneath it all was a spine of discipline.
Next, they moved to the pantry, where cooks buzzed like bees. Kai snapped his fingers and a chef approached.
"Chef Milenko, state today's reserves."
"Three crates of salted cod, two barrels of potatoes, fresh carrots and beets from the eastern garden, and spices from the southern border—arrived this morning."
Ethan blinked. The man recited the list like it was memorized scripture.
Kai turned to Ethan again. "Details. Names. Quantities. In this castle, you must know them as well as your own."
"I'll do my best," Ethan replied, making a mental note to start memorizing fast.
They continued their inspections. In the correspondence room, Ethan helped sort invitations by region. The coronation had attracted nobles from across the continent. Each letter was a potential alliance—or a landmine.
"Princess Anna is handling a few of the northern invites herself," Kai mentioned while signing a wax seal. "She has… enthusiasm."
Ethan smiled faintly at the memory of their meeting. "That's one word for it."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "You've met her?"
"Briefly," Ethan admitted. "In town."
"Then you'll understand when I say she's not quite the average royal."
By midday, they paused for tea. Kai didn't rest—he reviewed troop logistics and border updates while sipping.
Ethan sat across from him, finally able to breathe.
"Your composure's good," Kai said. "You don't act like a noble, but you observe well."
"Not a noble," Ethan replied. "Just… someone trying to find his place."
Kai studied him for a moment, then set his teacup down. "Where are you from, truly?"
Ethan hesitated. He couldn't exactly say "another world." So instead, he replied, "Far. Not the kind of place you'd find on a map."
Kai didn't press further. "Everyone has their past. Just remember—reputation is earned, not granted. The castle has many eyes."
As the sun dipped lower on the horizon, casting a golden hue across the castle floor, Kai led Ethan to the grand corridor near the ballroom. There, servants were polishing the chandeliers and preparing the layout for the coronation banquet.
"This is where the world will look," Kai said. "Tomorrow, Arendelle becomes whole again."
Before Ethan could reply, hurried footsteps echoed from the far end of the corridor.
He turned.
Princess Anna rounded the corner, her auburn hair bouncing in a soft braid. Her green eyes lit up as she saw Ethan, and a bright smile crossed her lips.
"There you are!" she called.
Ethan blinked. "Princess Anna?"
Kai stepped aside with a respectful bow. "Your Highness."
She gave Kai a quick nod before stopping in front of Ethan.
"I've been looking all over for you," she said, a little breathless. "I… I have a question. And a request."
Ethan tilted his head. "What kind of request?"
She clasped her hands behind her back and rocked on her heels. "Would you… join me at the coronation tomorrow?"
Ethan blinked.
"What?"
A soft flush touched her cheeks. "You helped me. You're brave. And well… I'd like you there. As my guest."
Before he could respond, a voice called from behind her.
"Princess Anna, your sister needs you in the west hall—immediately."
Anna frowned. "Of course."
She turned back to Ethan. "Think about it, okay? I'll come find you later."
And just like that, she was gone.
Ethan stood there, staring after her.
Kai approached quietly. "You've made quite an impression, it seems."
Ethan exhaled slowly, his thoughts racing.
