Chapter 10 - Shadows Don’t Stay Buried

Chapter 9: Shadows Don't Stay Buried

The forest burned behind them.

Ash floated through the air like black snow as Kai helped hoist Ren over his shoulder. His robes were torn, caked with blood—some his, most not. The mission was complete. Barely.

They hadn't expected the nest to be that deep.

They hadn't expected the monsters to move like coordinated predators.

And they certainly hadn't expected Kai to walk out of it alive, let alone carrying the mission's sole casualty like it was routine.

The academy gates loomed like jagged stone teeth against the night.

Several instructors and high-ranking students waited there, arms crossed, expressions unreadable. But the moment Kai crossed the threshold, a voice snapped through the silence.

"You were out of formation."

It came from Instructor Juno, a Martial Master and one of the academy's more rigid enforcers of protocol. His uniform was spotless, his gaze like sharpened steel.

Kai shifted Ren's weight slightly, his own posture upright despite the exhaustion. "Ren would've died if I hadn't moved."

"That's not your call to make, Novice."

"I'm an Expert now."

"A reckless one," Juno snapped. "Your mission report says you engaged the alpha alone. You abandoned your team's flank. You broke formation. You disobeyed protocol."

Kai didn't blink. "And I'm still alive. Ren's still alive. The rest of the squad is alive. The alpha is dead. Are you angry because I disobeyed protocol, or because I didn't die for it?"

A hush fell across the courtyard.

Juno took a step forward, ki flaring faintly around his shoulders. "Watch your tongue, boy. Power doesn't give you license to disrespect the chain of command."

"Then maybe the chain needs stronger links," Kai replied coldly. "Because out there? Orders would've killed us."

A muscle ticked in Juno's jaw. "You think you're special? That your strength puts you above the system? You've been lucky. That's all."

Kai's eyes darkened. "Luck doesn't sever bone. It doesn't tear through carapace or redirect fatal blows mid-motion. What happened out there wasn't luck. It was skill. Mine."

Someone among the spectators stifled a gasp.

Juno's ki surged slightly, a pressure like heated stone descending over the courtyard. "You're dangerously close to insubordination."

Kai finally shifted Ren onto a waiting medic's stretcher, then turned back, eyes burning with quiet fire.

"I don't need to be liked here. I don't need to be understood. I just need to survive. And I did. You're welcome."

Without waiting for dismissal, he walked past Juno.

Not in defiance.

In indifference.

And that was worse.

Kai dismissed the window with a blink.

He was already replaying the fight in his head—how many mistakes he made, how many inches from death he'd danced.

He needed to be sharper. Faster. Better.

Later that night, in the dim quiet of his quarters, Kai sat cross-legged on the wooden floor. His shirt was still damp with blood. But his eyes were clear, his breathing calm.

He opened his palm and watched as fractured threads of ki shimmered like veins of mirrored light.

Reality Grasp was evolving.

He wasn't just copying movement anymore. In the heat of the fight, he'd done more. He'd inverted momentum. Redirected cause and effect.

It wasn't just Phantom Reversal.

It was a step closer to Fractured Reality.

But that step came with weight.

He felt it in his bones—like his body was resisting the truth it had no right to contain.

Kai exhaled slowly, then opened his Stat Allocation menu.

30 points.

He placed them with surgical precision:

• Strength +5

• Endurance +7

• Perception +5

• Willpower +8

• Ki +5

His limbs no longer trembled. His breath flowed easier. The weight of the mission, the fight, the argument—it settled into his muscles like iron.

He stood, moonlight etching cold silver onto the wooden floor.

From here on, the shadows wouldn't stay buried.

And neither would he.
