Mira reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
She slid it across the table.
None of us moved at first.
Then Lena opened it.
Her face went pale.
"What is it?" Ava asked.
"A list," Lena said quietly. "Of names."
My stomach dropped. "Whose?"
Mira looked at me. "Yours."
She pointed at Lena. "Yours."
Then Ava. "And yours."
I stared at her. "Are we next?"
Mira shook her head. "You've already been marked."
I leaned back. "So what? We're on some recruitment list?"
"No," she said. "You're on the selection list."
Ava frowned. "Selection for what?"
Mira hesitated. "For who gets changed. Who gets broken. Who gets erased."
Lena closed the paper slowly. "Where did you get this?"
"I stole it," Mira said. "From someone who didn't realize I was still me."
I rubbed my temples. "This is insane. How does no one else see this happening?"
"Because they don't want to," Mira said. "Or because they already chose a side."
She looked at me again. "And some already forgot they ever had a choice."
I got another flash then.
Me.
Sitting in a room.
Looking at a screen.
Watching someone scream.
Then the image cut off.
I gasped as I came back.
Lena was staring at me. "You saw something."
I nodded. "Yeah."
Ava asked, "What?"
I looked at them.
"I saw myself watching someone break."
"And?" Lena pressed.
I whispered, "I didn't look surprised."
