Chapter 12 - Chapter 11 — The Roots of Trust Run Deep

The morning sun filtered gently through the tall grass, casting dancing patterns across the training grounds. Unlike previous days, a light mist hung over the fields, softening every sound and lending the landscape an almost dreamlike quality.

Riven stood atop a small hill, watching as his team slowly emerged from the barn and makeshift den areas. He let them wake naturally, letting their instincts dictate their rhythm.

Today, he wasn't planning on pushing them. Today was for nurturing what had begun to grow between them all.

Stufful and Buneary took to the berry rows early, nosing curiously through the thickening foliage of the Sitrus plants. Riolu emerged next, focused as ever, performing light stretches beside the log beams Riven had fashioned as training props.

Zorua, to Riven's mild surprise, didn't lurk this time. She trotted beside Riolu like it was normal, even copying his stretches with exaggerated flair. She caught Riven watching and offered a smug, foxlike grin before turning her attention back to her mock exercises.

Sableye remained inside, still weak, but he had at least managed to sit upright unaided this morning. Progress, slow but steady.

Riven opened the System Interface again.

Pokémon with low trust gain comfort faster near you. Emotional stability increases in your proximity.

That one made him pause. The System really was evolving alongside them.

Was it reacting to him?

Or simply shaping him into something else?

The farmland, which Riven had mostly explored at surface level so far, still had unexplored pockets. The day before, he had noticed a strange protrusion near the northeast boundary—partially covered by thick weeds and roots. It looked like the tip of a broken ruin or an ancient boundary marker.

After a hearty breakfast—Oran stew with crushed berries and foraged herbs—Riven decided to investigate it.

Zorua and Riolu followed close. Stufful hesitated at first but joined when Buneary nudged it gently.

Together, they reached the area.

It took nearly an hour of careful digging, clearing away thick vines and soil hardened by years of neglect. But eventually, something took shape.

A stone circle, about ten feet wide, sunk slightly into the ground. Its edges were lined with mossy glyphs Riven couldn't read.

Then the System pinged.

Riven knelt, brushing his hand over the engraved rim. "Another mystery."

Riolu tapped the edge experimentally, then nodded.

They would rebuild this. Together.

That afternoon, Riven set aside intense training and focused on something else—trust-building through cooperation.

He asked each Pokémon to help gather natural materials. Not combat drops, not rare loot. Just honest work.

Zorua collected sticks from the thickets, dragging them like a mischievous puppy.

Buneary and Stufful helped with small rocks, nudging them into a pile with their noses and paws.

Riolu took the lead with strength tasks, carrying heavy logs with ease.

Even Sableye, watching from a distance, seemed more alert as he saw his companions work together for something that wasn't just survival.

There were no attacks. No wild threats. No battles.

Just breathing the same air.

Feeling the same soil beneath their feet.

And building something real.

By the time the sun began to set, they had made real progress. Two of the hardwood pieces had been set into place. None of them knew exactly how to complete a restoration project like this—but it didn't matter.

The effort was what counted.

Riven sat near the firepit with his notebook open. He'd taken to jotting things down—thoughts, observations, even small sketches of his Pokémon.

Stufful had curled against Buneary again, its tail twitching happily.

Riolu sat beside the fire, arms crossed, legs folded, radiating calm.

Zorua… was gone.

Then—

A sudden pounce from the darkness.

Zorua landed beside Riven's lap and stuck her tongue out.

"Little sneak," he laughed, petting her head gently. She didn't pull away.

The System Speaks

The fire crackled. Crickets began to sing. And the System interface opened again on its own.

"Okay," Riven muttered, "I guess that's our goal for the week."

A different window slid into view, text flowing slowly like dialogue.

[System Insight Activated]

You are the seed.Your Pokémon are the roots. The world itself is the soil.

Growth requires time.Trust requires patience.Power will come… if the foundation is strong.

He stared for a moment, unsure what to say.

Then closed the window.

There was still so much to do.

So much to learn.

And for the first time since arriving in this world, Riven didn't feel lost.

He felt needed.

He felt anchored.

And that, more than anything, meant he could truly start to live.
