Chapter 1 - The Call

Whisper of amsterdam

The sun had barely spilled its golden warmth across the campus grounds when Alessia stepped out of the philosophy lecture hall.

Her eyes-light-brown, lingered on leaf dappled-path ahead, but her mind was elsewhere-restless, scattered, as if something new was stirring just beneath her skin.

It had started two weeks ago.

A strange itch beneath her palm.

A pull in her chest whenever someone mentions Europe.

Alessia had grown up in Germany.

Her grandmother's stories always made her long for Amsterdam. But now, it wasn't just longing. It was need.

Raw. irrational.

She flexed her hand absently, feeling that phantom itch again, before shaking it off and heading across the quad.

Her friends gathered beneath the shade of the old college oak. Alessia leaned against the trunk, chewing her bottom lip.

"We should go somewhere " she said suddenly.

"somewhere far. Somewhere....weird "

Nancy rolled her eyes, sipping iced coffee like the unbothered queen she was "Define weird. because if you say 'Paris', I swear-"

"Amsterdam" Alessia cut in, almost in a daze.

"There's this.....place . An ancient grave, supposedly from the Dark ages. No name. just these stones with symbols carved so deep they say no tools could've made them"

Emma raised a burrow "sounds haunted.I'm in"

"Same," charlotte chirped. "do you think there will be hot guys with accents "

They laughed, and the moment lightened, but Alessia's gaze drifted again-toward the horizon. Toward something none of them could see.

Emma got up "gotta bounce. Dad's waiting "

Charlotte " better hurry, Mr.Caril had zero chills"

Emma rolled her eyes and hurried off.

Nancy watching Alessia's distracted face, nudged her "hey, what's wrong ?"

Alessia blinked " I.....I keep thinking about a Dutch town. Had a dream about it last night"

Charlotte lit a cigarette, offering alessia one "Want one ?"

Alessia took one , Nancy shook her head "no, I'm good"

Nancy turned to Alessia "what's the dream ? "

Alessia exhaled smoke, staring at the boys playing basketball ball in the distance "that place was nothing like my hometown . It was gothic. place was rich in Dutch architectural heritage. Full of narrow streets, ancient churches and dark silhouettes. It felt....."

She hesitated "important"

Charlotte's eyes gleamed.

"let me guess-mystery guy in the dream?"

Alessia hesitated "yeah. In front of a church square, there was a man. He had golden eyes. Not just yellow- impossible golden"

Charlotte grinned.

"ghost prince or sexy demon. Love it!"

Nancy smacked her arm. "Charlotte!"

Charlotte just inhaled the cigarette.

Alessia smiled faintly "He looked me straight in the eyes... called me by my name. I have never seen him before, but something in his gaze... like he knew me. Like I was meant to find him"

Nancy sighed and snorted "you had me at the golden eye thing but Alessia.... That's just a crazy dream"

Alessia shook her head. "No. it felt real"

Nancy softened and put her hand over Alessia's, squeezing it.

"I'm okay to go to Amsterdam but don't expect me to believe in gothic ghost boyfriends "

She grabbed her bag and stood up " August will kill me if I don't show up. Bye, guys"

Alessia called after her "give her my kisses"

Nancy waved, laughing.

In the parking lot, Nancy yanked her car door open-

-and screamed as someone grabbed her wrist and dragged her inside.

She landed against a warm chest. "Idiot!"

She snapped "You nearly broke my leg"

Nikolas grinned and kissed her on the nose. "surprise"

"weren't you supposed to be gaming today?" she said, giving his shoulder a playful shove.

He leaned closer. "just wanted to say I love you"

Nancy's cheeks flushed pink. she mumbled, "I know you are lying..... but I love it anyway" she pressed her lips on his.

Under the college oak.

Charlotte "do you believe that crazy dream ?"

Alessia sighed "I'm not sure but my instinct says theres something out in Amsterdam"

Charlotte "then, we will find out "

Alessia beamed "really? You will Help me?"

Charlotte smiled "of course, I would"

They stayed a little longer, until the late afternoon winds began to turn cool, then parted their ways.

Later that evening, Alessia stood outside a modest apartment tucked between the bookshops of downtown.

Her heart pounded as she pressed the buzzer.

The door opened with a familiar creak

there he stood -her boyfriend John, or at least, the boy she thought she still had.

"Come in" he casually said as he glued to his phone.

Alessia threw her bag on couch and sat beside it, he sat in the single chair. Barely glancing up.

Alessia looked at his indifference

"What's wrong with you?" She asked. "Are you still mad at me ?"

John didn't even shrug "why would I be mad at you?"

She crossed the space, and straddled his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck. "look, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were with your friends"

John said "it's fine, Claire is also one of my friends" still scrolling.

Alessia stiffened , she snatched the phone from his hand, hiding it behind her back.

"cant you talk by looking at my face?"

John sighed, exasperated "give it back"

Alessia "promise me first"

John sighed and clenched his jaw "fine, give that back"

Alessia gave it to him, he just glanced at it and puts it on his pocket.

"so what did you wanna talk about?"

Alessia took a breath. "we are going to Amsterdam next week, will you come with me ?"

He looked close at her "let me guess, the old nameless gravestone? Alessia,Cant you just get rid of your fucking delusions"

She blinked, hurt splashing across her face.

Alessia "it's not my delusion, I even consulted a psychiatrist because you asked" she said quietly "but this feeling-it won't go away"

"it's always with you. Ghosts. Dreams. Symbols in the mirror. When are you going to live in the real world?" He spat it out.

Tears pricked the corners of her eyes, but she stood up fast, anger stiffening her spine.

"fuck you, john."

Grabbing her bag, she slammed the door.

The city streets were colder than she remembered, the wind whispered against her ears, and the shadows danced longer than usual, she felt it again-

The call

And this time, it wasn't a feeling.

It was a voice

"Find me"

The words slipped through the night like smoke, wrapping around her heart.

Alessia froze. She clutched the strap of her bag tighter and lifted her face to the half-lit sky.
