Chapter 36 - SCP - 037 "Dwarf Star"

SCP - 037 "Dwarf Star"

Object Class - Euclid

The Conference Room, Site-22

The room is tense. A large digital display shows a live feed of SCP-037's containment chamber, shimmering faintly with electromagnetic interference. Dr. Innis stands at the head of the table, holding a folder of reports, addressing a group of senior Foundation officials—O5 Council members, scientists, and engineers.

Dr. Innis: (with urgency) Ladies and gentlemen, I must stress that our current containment of SCP-037 is precarious at best. Its stellar evolution is accelerating faster than our models predicted. Soon, we're looking at a potential nova that could devastate the region—and possibly the planet.

O5-2: (leaning forward) You're suggesting we abandon containment altogether? That's reckless.

Dr. Innis: Not abandon, but relocate. The safest course—by far—is to transport SCP-037 off-planet, perhaps into an adjacent universe or dimension. We have artifacts and SCPs that might facilitate this.

O5-4: (frowning) And you believe this can be done safely? Using artifacts like SCP-███? That's untested, dangerous, and frankly, reckless.

Dr. Innis: (firmly) It's a gamble we must take. The alternative is risking a nova—an event with a yield measured in gigatons. We're talking about the potential extinction of life as we know it.

The room falls silent. A younger scientist, Dr. Ramirez, raises a hand.

Dr. Ramirez: But what about the risks of transporting SCP-037? We don't know where it would end up. It could become even more uncontrollable.

Dr. Innis: True, but I believe the risks of doing nothing outweigh those of attempting an escape. We have the means, and the artifacts. The question is—do we have the will?

The O5 Council members exchange tense glances.

The Secure Lab, Later that Night

Dr. Innis and a team of engineers examine the containment chamber. The electromagnetic readings are fluctuating more violently than usual.

Engineer Chen: (checking monitors) The EM emissions are spiking again. The star's radiative output is accelerating. If this continues, we'll reach critical levels in days.

Dr. Innis: (nodding grimly) We need to prepare the transport. I've coordinated with the artifact specialists. If we're to do this, it has to be within the next few days.

Engineer Chen: Are you sure we can trust SCP-███ to do this? Its last containment attempt was… problematic.

Dr. Innis: (sighs) No containment is perfect. But SCP-███ has the best chance of anchoring SCP-037 into a dimension where it can't threaten Earth.

Suddenly, a warning alarm blares. The room's lights flicker.

Engineer Chen: The containment field is destabilizing again. We're running out of options.

Dr. Innis: (clenching fists) Then it's now or never. We either act decisively or watch the star go supernova.

The Containment Chamber, Moments Before the Attempt

The chamber is filled with technicians preparing the artifact array. Dr. Innis stands before the portal device, a mixture of resolve and apprehension on his face.

Dr. Innis: Remember, this is our best shot. Once we activate the transfer, there's no turning back. We're betting the future of the world on this.

Technician: (nervously) Do you think it will work?

Dr. Innis: (quietly) I hope. But if it doesn't, I fear what's coming will be far worse.

The team begins activating the artifacts. The chamber hums with energy. SCP-037's faint glow pulses in sync with the process.

The Aftermath

The chamber is silent. The transfer completed, the team waits anxiously. The star's electromagnetic signature begins to diminish, the chamber's readings stabilizing.

Dr. Innis: (relieved) It's done. We've moved it.

Engineer Chen: But… look at the readings. The star's energy is dispersing… and the chamber is cooling down.

Suddenly, the room is flooded with a strange, silvery light. The air feels thick, charged.

Scientist Ramirez: Did we… just send it somewhere else? Or did we destroy it?

The lights flicker again, and a faint, distant rumble echoes.

Dr. Innis: (hesitant) We don't know. But I believe we've bought the Earth some time.

He looks at the monitor, where the star's signature is fading into nothingness.

Dr. Innis: Whatever universe or dimension SCP-037 now resides in… I hope it's safe. For our sake.

End.
