Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – The Stone Beneath the Ivy

Tobrin packed light—his usual hatchet sharpened to a mirror shine, rope coiled over his shoulder, and enough dried meat to last three days tucked beneath his rolled cloak. He double-checked his gear without speaking, kneeling to tie the cord on his satchel one last time. The sun was still rising, a pale haze across the tree line, casting long shadows over the clearing.

Beside him stood Lysa, draped in her brown traveling cloak, the hood lowered to reveal her tight braid and focused eyes. Her pack was lighter but more delicate: tinctures, pressed herbs, dried roots, a waterskin of fermented violet tea, and her worn field notebook tied with a leather thong.

They were the first to leave.

"You sure you want to do this?" Kail asked from behind, arms folded.

Tobrin stood, adjusting the strap of his hatchet. "I volunteered. Forests don't spook me."

Lysa gave Kail a brief, knowing glance. "You'll need someone who can read more than footprints. Plants speak too."

Kail nodded solemnly. "I know. Just… be careful. We don't know what's out there."

Tobrin smirked as he glanced at Lysa. "I'll handle the forest," he said. "She can handle the ghosts."

Lysa rolled her eyes. "You think there'll be ghosts?"

He gave a half-laugh. "No. But if something stares at me from a bush, I'd rather it be you looking back than some dead king."

Kail cracked a smile. Their camaraderie gave him some comfort, though not enough to soothe the weight in his chest.

They left at sunrise.

A carved wooden post marked the new path east—painted with black pitch, tied with a leather strip that fluttered in the breeze like a muted banner. Beyond it: dense brush, unseen trails, a thousand chances for discovery… or danger.

Kail wanted to go with them. Every fiber of his instincts said lead from the front. But he'd learned, slowly and stubbornly, that a leader's place wasn't always where the blade struck deepest or where first blood was drawn.

Sometimes, the leader's place was here—holding the center so others could extend the boundary.

Kail's Journal – Morning Entry

"The land's opening itself. Slowly. It's more than dirt and trees. There's age here. Layers. We're just scratching the surface."

Two Days Later – Forest Interior

The woods thickened around them. Every hour of progress came with resistance—twisted undergrowth, moss-draped trunks, thorns that caught sleeves and skin like eager claws. The sky was mostly lost behind the canopy, and what sun filtered through came in scattered, ethereal shafts.

Even the wind sounded muffled.

Birds cried in unfamiliar tones. One species, barely glimpsed, had two beaks that opened sideways instead of vertical. Another moved like smoke, slithering between branches before vanishing. But stranger than any creature was the silence between sounds—long pauses where even the breeze seemed to hold its breath.

Then, Tobrin's boot hit something that clanked.

He knelt, brushing leaves and moss aside.

"Path?" Lysa whispered behind him, already kneeling, eyes wide.

"No," Tobrin muttered. "Stone."

More brushing. Another slab. Then another—partially sunken into the soil like a buried memory. After several minutes of work, they uncovered enough to recognize the pattern. A stairwell. Descending. Each step cracked, moss-covered, but undeniably shaped.

Above it, an archway of heavy stone blocks framed the descent. Though weathered, faint carvings still marked its upper curve: symbols neither of them recognized except for one—a perfect open eye, carved deep in the center.

Lysa inhaled sharply. "That… that's not kingdom-era."

Tobrin tilted his head. "Meaning?"

"Meaning this was here before the kingdom existed."

Lysa knelt closer, tracing a ring of runes embedded in one of the larger stones.

"This isn't just a ruin. It's structured. It looks like a ritual site. Or… or maybe even a gateway."

Tobrin's brow furrowed. "Can we enter it?"

She shook her head. "It's sealed. But there's something… not dead. Not alive, either. Watching."

He stood slowly, eyes sweeping the forest edge. "We're not alone."

For a moment, they just stood there. Not in fear—but awe. They'd stepped into something older than memory.

Back at Greyvine Hollow – Later That Night

The hearth in the longhall crackled as Lysa and Tobrin gave their report. Kail, Mira, and Rin listened in full silence.

Tobrin dropped the moss-scraped sketch of the eye symbol onto the table. Mira leaned in. Her expression didn't change, but Kail caught the subtle flick of her thumb brushing her dagger hilt.

"You're sure it was sealed?" Rin asked sharply.

"Yes," Lysa answered. "The energy was passive. It didn't react."

"Yet," Rin muttered.

Kail remained silent for a beat, then spoke:

"Mark the location. We don't touch it yet, but we'll station a watch near the route. Eyes on it every day."

He turned to Mira. "Assign a rotation. I want no less than two on watch at all times. Quietly. We don't spook the people."

Mira nodded. "I'll handle it."

Journal Entry – Kail of Greyvine

"We reached the east. And the world answered.

Not with hostility. Not yet.

But with memory—written in stone.

This land has secrets. And it's starting to whisper."

System Insight

"Old stones hold forgotten knowledge.

The deeper the roots, the higher the tree may grow."

New Passive Task – Observing the Ruin

Potential Perk: World Lore Fragment (If activated)

The third day brought fresh storms to Greyvine—clouds thick and dark with the scent of coming thunder. Kail stood by the east clearing as the builders laid the final stone for the exploration outpost. In the distance, the forest swayed like a restless sea.

They had sent roots into the east.

And now, the stone had whispered back.
