Chapter 8 - Murphy's Law

With a fierce determination, Adrien pushed through the frigid veil of dread and propelled himself into motion, using the newfound perception to guide his actions.

The bear lunged again, jaws wide, the other civilians still sprinting ahead, oblivious to the looming disaster.

Adrien focused his mind, drawing on the energy with raw intention. Time felt like mercury in his hands, malleable and responsive.

He darted forward, the world around him moving in slow motion as he zeroed in on the bear.

Adrien could see the creature's muscles ripple beneath its fur, the earth shaking with every massive step it took toward the remaining civilians.

With a wave of his hand, he unleashed a blast of energy from his feet, and the very air shimmered as he propelled himself closer.

He felt a rush of warmth, a surge of power channelling through him, amplifying his strength and speed.

The bear's eyes narrowed, catching sight of him at the last moment, too late to evade Adrien's assault.

In that suspended state of time, Adrien struck.

He brought his fist down upon the bear's skull with unparalleled force, enhanced by the energy flowing through him.

The impact felt like a lightning strike, reverberating through the very ground.

A shockwave erupted upon contact, the air charging with energy as the beast's roar erupted into silence.

The bear's massive body collapsed heavy and lifeless, a thud that shattered the stillness created by Adrien's time-dilation.

The weight of the world resumed its natural flow, and the soldiers stared in stunned disbelief.

"Adrien!" Ria called out, breaking up the daze. The civilians around them stared, their fear mingling with awe at the spectacle they had just witnessed.

Adrien stood, breathing heavily, his senses buzzing with a confusion and exhilaration that flooded through him.

He had acted decisively, obliterating the monstrous bear, but the memory of the crushed civilian remained etched in his mind, a reminder of the cost of inaction.

The adrenaline ebbed, a throbbing guilt threatened to surface. He glanced back at the body of the young man.

The reality of what had happened settled with a weighty finality. They had failed to protect him, and that failure woke him up, if only a little.

"We need to help them," he said, his voice steadier than he felt. Ria moved closer, her gaze fixed on him, as if reading the turmoil beneath his composed exterior.

"Adrien, you did what you could. We were outmatched. But we can't let their death be in vain. We need to ensure the survivors get to safety."

She encouraged, but her own voice trembled as she forced herself to confront the grim scene.

Adrien nodded, steeling himself.

With that, Miller got to comforting and explaining details to the new arrivals. And they began escorting them back to camp.

They withdraw from the woods, back the way they came, the terrain gradually levelling out, and soon the faint outline of a military base emerged in the distance.

The human activity felt like a beacon of safety, a reminder that hope still existed amidst the chaos engulfing their world.

"Keep moving!" Miller urged, his voice carrying a tone of level calm. "We're almost there!"

The civilians increased their pace, as though a renewed energy surged through them at the sight of salvation.

The sight of the base rekindled the flames of hope. Hope for survival, hope for peace, hope for tomorrow.

But that was a story for another day.

As of now, they were all still shaken by the encounter, and they would do what they could to fall in step with this new norm.

If there was one thing humanity was known for, it was adaptability. And adapt they would.

As they approached the gates, sentries snapped to attention, their expressions set with concern. Lieutenant Carter, a stern figure with a weathered face, stepped forward.

"What happened?" he asked, his eyes scanning the group for injuries. Taking note of everyone's weary appearance.

"Attack by a bear," Ria explained, her breath heavy as she caught up. "We lost a civilian. It was... it was chaotic."

Carter's face hardened at the news, but he nodded, gesturing for them to enter. "Get them inside. We have medics on standby."

Once through the gates, Adrien felt a slight easing of tension. Refugees huddled together in makeshift shelters, their eyes weary but filled with resilience.

The atmosphere buzzed with a mix of urgency and camaraderie; people sharing supplies, tending to the wounded, and bracing for the uncertain future.

Adrien and Ria guided the group toward a central tent where medics were working to assist those in need.

He could see other volunteers stepping forward to offer assistance, providing blankets and water for the exhausted civilians.

"Over here!" Ria called, leading those who had been shaken by the encounter toward a designated recovery area.

Adrien's felt his heart stirred by her display of unwavering support, "She certainly has a gift for making people feel safe, even in times of despair." he thought.

As the refugees settled in, Adrien caught sight of familiar faces among the gathered volunteers, his family, among the others who had been brought together by the apocalypse.

There was a sense of unity all round as he realized how interconnected their fates had become.

At least on the surface. He could feel the co dependence building in the air, the feeling that there was safety in numbers, "false security."

"Adrien, over here!" Alex called out running towards him while waving, urgency etched onto her features.

Mel and Sarah were peeking out of a bigger tent meant for the arrivals, it looked like they were helping out with the relief measures.

"What's going on?" Adrien approached, concern sharpening his focus.

"Are you okay? we saw the new arrivals."

"Yeah, it was much more eventful than expected, I'll explain later."

"By the way, a bunch of soldiers suggested we move into the base", she spoke glancing at the walled structure behind the makeshift camp. "What do you think?"

Adrien's eyes narrowed, though 'someone' had suggested it before, after Miller's outburst, he was having second thoughts, even if it was 'safe'.

Safety was relative, safe from the beasts, or the mildly malicious humans they were staying with.

Adrien did not believe for a second that this camp was as safe as it looked. It could be brought down easily without any fanfare.

"Let's do as they suggest for now." He suggested.

"Okay. I also need to show you something later, I can use this cool ability now." She smiled excitedly, like a child having found a new toy.

It was exactly what she needed to take her mind off of things.

She gave him one last glance and walked back to help the others.

"Oh...?" Adrien was visibly intrigued.

"I wonder what ability the energy gave her, speaking off, I should also test out the ability I used in the fights earlier."

As the camp buzzed with activity, Adrien felt a renewed sense of purpose. Figuring out how to effectively use these abilities they had gained.

Apart from the advantage it would give him when fighting abominations, it would also be easier to subdue other people if he had enough strength.

Such were his thoughts.

Hours passed, and as night settled in, the base became a hub of quiet determination.

The sound of laughter intertwined with the murmurs of worry as families reunited and shared the sense of sorrow, and hope.

Standing on the outskirts of the gathering, Adrien took a deep breath. The memory of the bear loomed in his mind.

It's movements played out in his mind, as if running simulations, he layered his own movements over his memory.

He closed his eyes, and, like a mantra, he ran them over and over, simulating it, analysing how he could have made his movements better.

Layering imaginary actions over his inefficient newbie movements. Though it had felt like he had an easy time, he knew that it would have gone the other way against stronger opponents.

And like with everything he did, he started to make failsafes for next time, in the worst-case scenario. "One can never be too careful."

Using his own knowledge, he integrated erratic movements into his own style, feints, punches, kicks, strikes.

"Hmmm, I might need strong, solid weapon. like a sword? Where can I find one?" He looked around, the best thing close to a sword he could see were the big rods that held up the tents.

"Tomorrow." He thought.

He needed to get stronger, there were probably stronger things out there, and in this moment, with people depending on him, he vowed to protect them.

"Let's ensure the gates are secure tonight," he said decisively to Malik and a few other soldiers.

And just like that, they began their rounds, checking the perimeter and preparing for whatever challenges the night might hold.

They were assigned shifts and units by Miller after the day's events.

With a heightened sense of vigilance, Adrien and his team patrolled under the stars.

He felt the pulse of the base, alive with a spirit that echoed through their shared experiences.

Whatever lay ahead in this fractured world, they would face it together.

As the moon hung high in the sky, casting a ghostly glow over the military base, a sense of calm settled in.

The children's sounds of laughter and play faded into whispers, and most of the refugees found a momentary respite, succumbing to fatigue after the day's tumult.

Everyone assigned to guard duty had taken up their posts, eyes alert for any signs of trouble, but the night remained deceptively serene.

It felt quieter than Adrien expected, "almost like the calm before the storm."

Adrien paced the perimeter with Malik and a couple of other soldiers, exchanging quiet observations and making small talk about what they would be doing from now on.

The rest of them seemed almost too comfortable with how things were turning out.

Suddenly, a deep, guttural growl cut through the stillness, sending a chill down Adrien's spine.

He stopped in his tracks, listening intently, his heart racing as the sounds of distress began to reverberate from the heart of the camp.

"Did you hear that?" Adrien asked, staring into the dark beyond the perimeter.

Before anyone could answer, the growl transformed into a series of frantic howls and screeches.

The sound was unlike anything Adrien had ever heard, a blend of animalistic fury and unsettling human cries.

The unmistakable instinct of danger coursed through his veins.

"Move! light the signal!" Malik shouted, his voice breaking the tense silence.

The base erupted into chaos. Lights flickered on, illuminating the stark faces of soldiers and civilians alike.

The air was thick with tension as Adrien turned back toward the camp, dread pooling in his stomach.

The troops began rallying to prepare for the threat, and without a moment of respite, a wave of figures emerged from the shadows, charging toward the camp.

A nightmarish horde of mutated humans and abominations.

Their bodies were deformed and warped, skin stretched too tightly over grotesque forms, eyes filled with a wild ferocity.

They moved erratically, a chaotic mass driven by primal instincts and a singular intent.

To feast upon the energy emanating from the abundance of human scents that surged through the tightly packed crowd of refugees.

"It's a horde!" Someone yelled.

Adrien found himself growing calm for some reason, very contradictory to the atmosphere around him.

His mind racing with strategies as he regained his footing. "Everyone, to the shelters! Get them inside!"

The soldiers, now aware of the threat, prepared their weapons and formed a defensive line.

Adrien felt oddly calm, it was surreal, he looked around, gauging the others' reaction.

They were definitely, shaken, tired, and scared, but their purpose was clear. Protect the base and stop this monstrous horde.

Ria emerged from the throng of panicked civilians, her ability to remain composed and think clearly impressing Adrien amid the chaos.

She was like a veteran who had fought countless war, though definitely not of this kind.

"We need to create a barrier!" she shouted to him, grabbing a nearby fire extinguisher to use as a makeshift weapon.

Without hesitation, Adrien moved, he caught hold of any solid item he could find that could be used as a weapon. As well dropping objects around in a perimeter.

Trash can lid, stakes, whatever could be used to defend against the impending onslaught.

Their firearms were extremely limited, and the heavy firearms, those that were available were still within the base.

The first wave of mutants lunged forward, shrieking as they crashed into the makeshift defences.

Adrien drew on the energy within him, feeling the familiar hum coursing through his veins, heightening his senses.

Time slowed as he focused, reaching for power to shield his mates and the refugees.

"Hold the line!" he bellowed, eyes blazing with focus as he unleashed a telekinetic force, propelling a wave of soil in front of him that formed a protective barrier to block sight.

The ground trembled and the mutants skidded to a halt, confusion sparking in their eyes.

But it was only a momentary reprieve.

The horde snarled and regrouped, relentlessly pushing forward, attempting to scale and destroy the makeshift fence wall around the tents as Adrien and the soldiers fought to hold them back.

Ria darted beside him, unleashing blasts from the fire extinguisher, sending clouds of foam and fire-retardant powder into the faces of the oncoming creatures.

"This isn't working!" she cried, breathing heavily as she dodged a clawed swipe from one of the mutants.

Adrien, grounded by her resolve, turned quickly.

"We need to find another way! We can't let them breach the camp!" His mind raced as he scanned the faces of the refugee crowd scrambling behind them, fear, helplessness, anticipation.

They depended on him and the soldiers.

Then, in a moment of clarity, he spotted the glow of energy swirling around the atmosphere.

If he could channel that energy, he might be able to amplify their defences and create a barrier or a shockwave strong enough to repel the creatures.

"Ria, cover me!" Adrien ordered, sprinting toward the centre.

With every ounce of focus, he reached out, grasping the energy pulsating around him and from within him.

He felt the surge power through him, invigorating every fibre of his being.

The air crackled as his energy intertwined with the air, forming an ethereal shield that shimmered under the moonlight.

"Step back!" he shouted, as he thrust his hands forward, sending a massive wave of energy cascading outward.

The transparent barrier enveloped the encroaching mutants, causing them to recoil in shock as it surged forward, flinging them back and creating a some space.

But as they say with murphy's law.

Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

A mutated leopard, leaping out of the forest faster than anyone could react scaled easily over the defensive line, directly into the group of people fleeing into the base walls.

It was gigantic cat with monstrous paws. Almost three times larger than your typical leopard.

Its paw lunged at a group of seven people running together, catching all of them with its strike before turning to its side and getting a hold of a soldier mid attack on his torso and tearing him into two.

All the noise dulled into an eery silence for a moment as the sound of tearing flesh tuned out all the other sounds.
