Chapter 41 - Chapter 40

The house was old, with a stone chimney and a rusty gate that creaked every time someone passed through it. For the first time in years, no one felt threatened inside. Instead of darkness — silence. Peace. And a breath that no longer weighed a ton.

Jeremy sat on the porch with a cup of tea in his hand. Julie was still sleeping upstairs, and he listened to the morning wind. Somewhere further away, in the shadow of the garden, Jack and Alison sat — motionless, as if afraid this moment might vanish.

"That's... strange," Jack finally spoke. "For so many years, I ran from the thought that I could just... sit."

Alison looked at her son, who was no longer a boy but a man — not because of what he had been through, but because of what he had chosen.

"And for so many years, I didn't believe I could come back. Not as a demon. As a mother," she whispered.

Jeremy stood and approached them.

There was no need to say "I love you." Their looks said it all.

There was no need to say "I forgive you." It had already happened.

Jack raised an eyebrow.

"Are you going to leave us here?"

"Only if you promise you won't wreck my house."

Alison laughed through her tears.

"You'll never run away again?"

Jeremy looked at the horizon. It no longer burned. It was bright. Quiet.

"I'll never have to."

Behind him, Julie appeared in the doorway, wrapped in his old sweater.

The family was imperfect.

But it was there.

And this time — no one took it away.

The house was quiet, and the city slept for the first time in years without nightmares. Jeremy entered the bedroom and saw Julie sitting by the window, bathed in moonlight. She wore only his shirt — too big, reaching almost to her knees.

He said nothing. He approached and stood behind her, resting his hands on her shoulders. He felt trembling in her body, but it wasn't fear — it was tension, waiting, an emotion that had been building between them for a long time.

"I can't sleep," she whispered without turning around. "I feel you behind me and... I can't sleep. I'm just thinking."

"About what?"

"That we're finally here. Together. And every time I believe it, I'm afraid you'll disappear."

Jeremy leaned down and kissed her neck.

"I won't disappear. Not anymore."

She turned and looked at him with such tenderness as if she saw him for the first time. She placed her hand on his cheek.

"You still have that something in your eyes. The shadow that always said you could leave. But today... for the first time, I see light there."

Jeremy took her hand and led her to the bed. She sat down, and he knelt before her, burying his face in her thighs, his arms wrapped around her hips. He was strong — physically and spiritually — but only with her did he allow himself to be vulnerable.

"Julie, if anything is to be permanent in my life, it's only you."

She pulled him by the shirt until he was above her. Their lips met in a long, slow kiss — not desperate, not passionate. Quiet. Meaningful. Like a vow they didn't need to speak.

Their bodies already knew each other, but that night the touch was different. It wasn't about desire. It was about proving to each other they were no longer alone.

Hands roamed slowly, deliberately. Breaths intertwined into one rhythm. Half-words turned into quiet whispers, and the world outside the window ceased to exist.

They were no longer children of chaos.

They were a new beginning.

*

The sun poured in through the window like a warm breath. The curtains moved lazily in the breeze, and the silence was almost unnatural after weeks of noise, fear, and running. Julie woke up first.

She lay nestled against Jeremy, whose breath was calm and even. His arm still held her in a half-sleep, as if even in rest he feared losing her.

She looked at his face — so peaceful as she had never seen before. The delicate shadow of lashes, the fine wrinkles by his eyes, slightly parted lips. He was hers. Finally completely.

She propped herself on her elbow and traced her fingers over his collarbone, making him twitch slightly and open his eyes.

"Good morning," he murmured in a still hoarse voice.

"I thought you were asleep."

"I wanted to. But I preferred feeling you next to me."

They fell silent, looking at each other without the need for words. The silence wasn't awkward — it was like a cocoon. Like a world built just for the two of them.

Julie ran her hand over his torso and sighed softly.

"You know that today we'll set off again. Everything will start anew."

Jeremy nodded.

"But something has changed. You. Me. Us."

He sat up, stretching lazily, then pulled her hand, seating her on his lap.

"Julie… whatever happens, I won't let you go again. I've seen what it means to lose everything. Now I want to fight for everything with you."

Julie interlaced her fingers with his.

"This is no fairy tale, Jeremy. There will be darkness. There will be screams. There will be moments when we doubt."

"And that's exactly why we must be together. In darkness, you can still find a way if someone holds your hand."

Their lips met in a calm, long kiss — one that does not promise a perfect tomorrow, but gives strength for today.

Outside, the sky took on a shade of gray-blue. A new day. A new chapter.
