Chapter 40 - Firium Z

Evan's Journal

Month 2, Day 8

Location: Wela Volcano Park

Time: 12:00 PM

I now stand before Wela Volcano Park, ready to obtain my next Z-Crystal. Lava flows and cracked stones set the stage for Evan's upcoming significant battle. This is where the island trail for the Firium Z takes place.

Like the previous trail, a captain is also present here. His most striking feature is his bright red, spiky hair, styled with a fiery crest that points back, resembling flames or a torch's flicker. Darker streaks near the roots add contrast. His brown eyes are sharp and focused, often reflecting a serious or intense demeanour. He wears a sleeveless black tank top.

With a fiery red-orange pattern that resembles magma cracks. His shorts are lava-brown, fastened with a red sash at the waist. Around his neck hangs a necklace made of teeth or stones, likely a nod to traditional island culture or volcanic symbolism. He is barefoot, highlighting his connection to nature and tradition, especially since he performs customary fire dances during his trial. He was also wearing a red Z-Ring.

"Hello challenger, My name is Kiawe, I assume you're here to challenge?" Kiawe told me.

"Yes", I replied.

"Then you can move forward", he replied. Well, did he look like a serious person?

As soon as I walked inside, a few minutes later.

A Totem Salazzle came in front of me. Long, sleek, and oozing danger, her entire body was cloaked in a dark aura, signalling her power as a Totem Pokémon.

I let Trixie out of the pokeball,

I stood ready, Trixie floating just beside me. Her wings, usually glowing in a soft white-pink shimmer from her Fairy Flow training, were pulsing gently. We both knew what we were up against.

And then I felt it.

The temperature spiked, the volcanic smoke coiled tighter, and from the rocks above,

"Trixie, let's start with Stun Spore!"

Trixie fluttered her wings and scattered golden pollen across the battlefield. Salazzle hissed, sidestepping easily—but not easily enough. A few sparks of static clung to her limbs.

He was paralysed, but still fast.

In a flash, Salazzle launched Flame Burst.

"Dodge left!"

Trixie narrowly avoided it, the heat singeing the edge of her wings. I gritted my teeth. One solid hit from a Fire-type move could be disastrous.

"Use Gust! Spin and redirect the smoke!"

Trixie obeyed, kicking up a vortex of wind. The volcanic smoke swirling around the arena was lifted into the air, giving us a clearer view. Salazzle squinted, then let out a piercing screech.

A second later, a call for help echoed from her mouth.

Suddenly, a smaller Salandit leapt out from the shadows, taking position behind her.

I cursed under my breath. Of course, she would call for backup.

"Trixie! Take out the Salandit with Psybeam!"

Trixie's eyes glowed, and a rainbow-colored beam shot forward, striking the Salandit hard and sending it rolling. It wasn't out—but it was dazed.

Then came the counter. Salazzle's tail lit up in crimson flame—Flamethrower.

"Shield with Fairy Wind!"

Trixie spun rapidly, wings glowing with fairy light, dispersing some of the fire—but not all of it. She cried out and dipped, a burn mark on one wing.

"Trixie—hang in there! One more Psybeam, right at Salazzle!"

She roared in reply, anger flaring through her aura. Her wings flared wide as she charged up.

Salazzle screeched, skidding backwards, sparks of paralysis now visibly hindering her movement.

"Now's our chance," I whispered. "Let's finish this."

I raised the Normalium Z, feeling the crystal pulse in my hand.

Trixie turned mid-air, her wings glowing white once more, as I shouted:

"Trixie, let's show her the Breakneck Blitz!"

She became a dazzling blur, light trailing behind her like comet dust, slamming into Salazzle in a surge of fairy energy.

A blinding flash, then silence.

When the light faded, Salazzle fell fainted. The Salandit, realising it was outmatched, fled back into the volcanic rocks.

Trixie slowly descended, panting but proud.
