Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Team 4: First Assessment

Waiting by the Academy gates, the three newly formed members of Team 4 felt the familiar Konoha bustle wash over them – the shouts from the market, the distant thud of training dummies, the quiet hum of the village's layered seals Kenji felt even through the soles of his sandals. The brief flurry of action during the rock-finding test had dissipated, leaving a low hum of anticipation. What did Yumi-sensei think? What would she say about Kenji's admittedly bizarre 'experimental' method?

Sora fiddled with the edge of her brand-new forehead protector, her glasses reflecting the grey sky. Riku stood motionless, eyes tracking pedestrians with pragmatic calm, a ninja-in-waiting blending into the background. Kenji adjusted his own headband, feeling the cool metal plate against his skin, a physical anchor to the identity he had carefully constructed.

Yumi Adachi arrived not with dramatic flair, but with quiet efficiency, her gaze sweeping over them analytically before settling into a composed expression. She led them to a small, shaded courtyard area behind the Academy – secluded but still close, perfect for a private conversation.

She sat on the edge of a low stone wall, gesturing for them to sit opposite her on the worn grass. The air wasn't tense, but focused. Kenji could sense her keen runic analysis actively observing them. She was already dissecting their energy flows, their postures, their reactions.

"Alright, Team 4," she began, her voice calm and even. "Let's discuss the exercise." She held up the rock Kenji had retrieved. "The objective wasn't simply finding the rock quickly. It was to observe your immediate response to a practical problem, your individual strengths, and your initial instincts on teamwork."

She looked at Riku. "Riku Tanaka. Your approach was systematic. You immediately moved to the logical high-probability area and began a thorough, localized ground search. You are grounded, reliable in following a plan." Riku nodded slightly, acknowledging her assessment. His 'stability' runes pulsed calmly.

She turned to Sora. "Sora Ito. You focused on the periphery and evidence gathering – scuff marks, potential trajectories. You demonstrated observational skill, a search for environmental cues." Sora flushed slightly, nodding quickly. Her 'observation' runes flickered with heightened awareness under the spotlight of Yumi-sensei's gaze.

Then, Yumi-sensei's gaze settled on Kenji. Kenji kept his expression carefully neutral, projecting mild curiosity and attentiveness. Her gaze felt piercing, searching for inconsistencies. "Kenji. Your approach was… unconventional. You proposed an experimental application of an orientation seal, then appeared to guide yourself based on… sensing something."

She paused, and Kenji felt the crucial moment arrive. He had to nail the delivery. "Ah, yes, Sensei," he said, striving for a tone that blended hesitancy with academic interest. "It was just something I'd been thinking about during my Fuinjutsu studies. If seals are about imposing patterns and effects, I wondered if you could use a specific symbol to… amplify your ability to sense a different target pattern at a distance. Like… setting up a sort of chakra echo." He looked down briefly, as if considering his own strange idea. "I wasn't sure it would work, especially just using dust and a quick trace. But it felt like there was… a subtle resonance, or pull, when I got closer. Roughly in this direction," he gestured vaguely, reproducing the exaggerated motion from earlier. He emphasized the uncertainty of the method. "Definitely not precise like proper sensory jutsu."

He finished, feeling a faint sweat form on his palms. He watched her runic analysis runes flare intensely, cross-referencing his explanation with her internal assessment of his energy during the test, potentially with knowledge of existing sensory techniques and seal theory. It felt like she was running diagnostics on his chakra.

After a long moment, Yumi-sensei gave a slow, almost thoughtful nod. "Sensing chakra resonance... guiding oneself by feel from an unstable, self-made seal..." She mused, more to herself than to them. Kenji saw her own runic signature flow – curiosity, data processing, integration of new variables. She didn't outright accept it as a proven technique, but she seemed to categorize it under 'Fuinjutsu experiment yielding anomalous sensory-like results.' A plausible-if-weird talent by someone steeped in seal theory. "An intriguing theory, Kenji. And effective, given the result." Her gaze sharpened slightly. "We'll explore the details of this 'experiment' of yours more later. For now, it served its purpose for retrieving the target."

Relief, cold and clean, washed over Kenji. It had held up. Precariously, perhaps, but the facade hadn't cracked. His 'Fuinjutsu prodigy with weird offshoots' cover remained intact.

Yumi-sensei leaned forward slightly. "However," she said, her tone shifting, "While each of you showed initiative individually, you did not function as a team. Kenji went off on his own, Sora and Riku stuck to conventional methods, and there was no real communication or collaboration after the initial briefing. This is a team exercise, Genin. Shinobi rarely work alone. Your strengths need to complement each other. Riku's thoroughness, Sora's observation, Kenji's… unconventional intuition. Figure out how to combine them effectively. That is the first goal for Team 4."

She picked up a second small object from her pouch, another simple rock, also pulsing with a faint 'marker' rune. "First D-rank mission. Gather five specific types of medicinal herbs from the forest behind the Academy. This rock contains a sample of one type of herb we need. The herbs are scattered. Show me that you can work together to identify the target herbs, search effectively, and pool your findings. Basic chakra control is allowed - no advanced jutsu unless strictly necessary for terrain navigation."

She stood up. "Meet me at the Academy gates at dawn tomorrow. Bring basic gear. Your teamwork today was minimal. Tomorrow, I expect coordination. Your individual talents mean little if you cannot function as a unit." With that, she gave a curt nod and disappeared back towards the main Academy building, leaving the three Genin alone in the quiet courtyard.

Kenji exchanged a look with Sora and Riku. Sora still looked a little wide-eyed from Kenji's explanation, but there was a flicker of curiosity now mingled with her nervousness. Riku's stoic face had settled back into its practical calm, but his gaze towards Kenji was longer this time, a quiet assessment that felt less like simple observation and more like re-evaluation based on new, puzzling data.

They had passed the first hurdle. Kenji's secret was still hidden, albeit behind a conveniently flexible 'Fuinjutsu talent'. Their sensei was analytical and observant, focusing on function and integration, and clearly didn't shy away from probing 'unconventional' abilities. And the primary focus was teamwork. Kenji had proven he could succeed individually in an unconventional way. Now, he had to figure out how to use his perception – or subtly guide his teammates based on it – while appearing to work collaboratively, ensuring they saw his contributions as supportive and understandable, not impossible or mysterious. Team 4 was a quiet storm gathering – potentially volatile for his secret, but also, perhaps, a chance to genuinely connect with allies who knew less and questioned differently than potential teammates like Sasuke or Sakura. The true test of skill, Kenji realized, wasn't mastering jutsu. It was mastering the delicate art of existing alongside others while seeing a world they couldn't even imagine. The herb gathering mission suddenly felt a lot more complex.
