The following morning, Elara's condo buzzed with a new form of energy. The lighting dimmed whilst she entered a room. Reflections flickered at the back of her that weren't her personal.
Her telephone vibrated.
Nathan: Lunch at The Glass Room? Something huge came in. You're gonna want to see this.
She slipped on her blazer and ring, tucking the crimson glyph under her shirt. When she arrived at the rooftop restaurant, Nathan become already at a corner desk, exhilaration and fear wrestling in his eyes.
"You're trending," he stated, sliding a tablet in the direction of her.
"You're trending," he said, sliding a tablet toward her.
Elara blinked. Her face stared back at her from business blogs and news sites. The CEO Who Rose from the Dead—Monroe & Monroe's Shocking Rebound.
She didn't smile. "I didn't ask for this."
Nathan leaned closer. "You didn't have to. Whatever miracle you pulled? It worked."
Before she could answer, a chill sliced across her spine.
At the bar, a man in a gray suit turned. His eyes—pitch black—locked with hers. And he smiled.
Elara shot to her feet. "We need to go. Now."
Nathan frowned. "What? Who—"
"That's not a man," she hissed, grabbing his arm. "It's something from the Veil."
