Chapter 82 - Chapter 82: Shadows of Gotham, A Reluctant Alliance Deepens

The resurgence of the Overseer's cult, now operating with a chilling efficiency and a deeper understanding of the arcane, did not escape Batman's notice.

His extensive network of informants in Gotham's underworld picked up whispers of strange rituals and shadowy figures moving between Starling and Gotham, carrying artifacts that pulsed with an unnatural darkness.

Recognizing the potential for a wider threat, Batman contacted Michael directly, his usual curtness tempered by a grudging acknowledgment of the shared danger.

"Queen," Batman's voice, a low growl over the encrypted comms, was devoid of any preamble. "The cult activity in Starling… it has tendrils reaching into Gotham.

They're seeking something… an artifact of significant power, linked to the entity you encountered."

"Malachi," Michael replied, a grimness in his tone. "He's more dangerous than Thorne. He understands the darkness he's dealing with."

"Zatanna mentioned texts recovered from Lian Yu," Batman pressed. "What did they reveal about this artifact?"

"Fragmented lore, mostly," Michael explained. "It's said to be a conduit for the shadow entity, capable of amplifying its power exponentially. Malachi believes he can control it."

"Control a being of pure shadow?" Batman's skepticism was evident. "A fool's errand. But a dangerous one nonetheless." He paused.

"I'm investigating a lead in Gotham. It might shed more light on this artifact. I suggest you do the same in Starling. Our interests align… for now."

This direct communication, a departure from Batman's usual shadowy surveillance, marked a significant step in their reluctant alliance, a tacit acknowledgment of Michael's unique insights into the arcane threats they faced.

Meanwhile, Zatanna, working alongside Michael, delved deeper into ancient magical texts, her knowledge proving invaluable in deciphering the cryptic clues left behind by the cult.

Their shared purpose and the ever-present danger continued to fuel the undeniable spark between them.
