Chapter 40 - Class B and C Reaction

Meanwhile in class B

"Alright, alright, now I'll announce the results of the little quiz from before, and then I'll explain what's coming up... "

Before she could finish, the teacher at the podium suddenly covered her mouth and bent over, looking like she was about to throw up.

"Ugh, it reeks of alcohol!"

Sitting in the front row, Shiranami Chihiro let out a girlish shriek and clamped her nose shut.

"It's fine, it's fine, it'll pass soon."

The teacher on stage waved her hand as she spoke, trying to steady her swaying body, muttering under her breath.

Hoshinomiya Chie, homeroom teacher of Class B. When it came to this teacher, the students of Class B were basically numb to it. They were used to seeing her hungover, acting way too casual for a proper teacher.

Normally, Ichinose Honami would step in at this point and gently remind her to sober up. But... Kanzaki Ryuji glanced in another direction. A certain girl was sitting at her desk, completely still. Lately, Ichinose Honami had been acting strange. Even though she still pretended everything was fine, sometimes a troubled look would slip through. What on earth happened to her?

"Alright, here are your results. Let me see... "

Chie Hoshinomiya pinned the scores up on the blackboard, then marked off a section with a red pen. She nodded in satisfaction.

"Everyone below this line failed the test. If you still fail the midterms and finals, you'll be expelled right away!"

Most of the students looked at each other in confusion.

"Um, Hoshinomiya-sensei, there aren't any names below the line?"

That's right—below the red line Chie Hoshinomiya drew, there was nothing but blank space.

"It's simple. No one failed,"

Chie Hoshinomiya looked at Chihiro Shiranami like she was an idiot. Chihiro Shiranami face turned red, but she didn't dare to say anything. Instead, she started to worry a little. She noticed her own ranking wasn't very high, a bit too close to the red line for comfort.

"Excuse me, what's the standard for failing?"

Honami Ichinose raised her hand and asked, just like always.

"Take your average score and divide it by two. That's the passing mark. For this quiz, the average was 82, so the passing score is 41. Anything below that is a fail... "

As she spoke, her expression suddenly changed. She dashed out of the classroom and sprinted down the hall. As for what she was up to, everyone in Class B knew exactly what was going on.

As soon as Chie Hoshinomiya left, the classroom erupted into a flurry of chatter. Not only did they have to prepare for the class competition, but they also had to avoid failing the exams and getting expelled. To be honest, a lot of people were feeling a bit uneasy.

"Class A class points are so high, they're over a hundred points ahead of us!"

Today homeroom also revealed the class points, and all the students could see the first-year rankings posted on the other side of the blackboard.

"By the way, the classes at the bottom are just too dumb, right? How did they end up with zero points?"

"But getting expelled just for failing an exam, that's kind of scary."

"What if the midterm is super hard?"

The students of B Class were all talking at once, but Ryuji Kanzaki gaze never left Honami Ichinose. The leader he had high hopes for didn't seem as energetic as usual.

At that moment, Chihiro Shiranami glanced at Honami Ichinose, looking a little uneasy. It seemed like she finally snapped out of it.

"Guys, I don't think anyone will fail the midterms right now. How about we all work together to raise our average scores?"

"Eh, eh, is Ichinose-san going to teach us?"

"Of course, no problem."

"Me too!"

Very quickly, quite a few classmates responded to Ichinose Honami—at least a dozen people. Ichinose Honami looked a bit hesitant. With so many people, how was she supposed to help everyone study?

"Let me join in too,"

Kanzaki Ryuji spoke up. Ichinose Honami was taken aback. Ever since the start of school, he'd always been the quiet type. She didn't expect him to become so active lately.

"Thank you, I'm looking forward to working with you, Kanzaki-kun."

Kanzaki Ryuji grades were also excellent, not much worse than her. With his help, things should get a lot easier. Even though she tried to think positively, her mood was still heavy. Could she really continue to carry everyone trust from now on?

Regarding this, Kanzaki Ryuji eyes were sharp—he seemed to be the only one in the class who noticed something was off with Ichinose Honami. Alright, he was going to find out exactly what had caused Ichinose Honami to end up like this.

.....

Class C.

When their homeroom teacher, Sakagami Kazuma, explained the school rules, the students of Class C didn't react much. But when they heard that failing the midterms and finals would mean expulsion, they finally showed some emotion.

"Heh, what are you all panicking for?Don't we still have Kaneda and Shiina?" Ryuen drawled lazily.

"If you think you can't pass, then just study your ass off. That's common sense, right?"

"Y-yeah, I guess that's true, but I really don't have much confidence," Ishizaki Daichi said nervously. He used to be a delinquent himself, until Ryuen pinned him to a desk and punched him a few times on the first day of school. Ryuen shot him a cold glare, and Ishizaki immediately shut up.

"I'll be in charge of helping everyone study." said a boy with glasses in a serious tone. He was the one Ryuen referred to as Kaneda—full name Kaneda Satoru. His grades were among the best in Class C, one of the top students.

"Pay more attention in class from now on. If you get expelled, that's your own problem."

Ryuen wasn't worried about the regular students; he was directing these words at the delinquents in the class. As a seasoned delinquent himself, he knew these guys basically had nothing to do with studying. The fact that they even showed up for class was already impressive. If he hadn't used violence to make them submit—at least on the surface, to follow the school's rules—there wouldn't be 550 class points left today.

They'd probably be in the same boat as Class D. Seeing all this unfold in the classroom, Sakagami Kazuma didn't react at all. In fact, when he first heard that Ryuen had beaten up his own classmates, he was only surprised for a moment.

Setting aside the delinquent part, Sakagami Kazuma actually thought highly of Ryuen Kakeru. The guy had picked up on the hidden meaning in his words on the very first day of school, and then took action right after classes ended. He deliberately blocked the cameras, closed the doors and windows, and then beat up his classmates.

Yeah, compared to fighting, getting points deducted for blocking the cameras is nothing. When he ran into an opponent he couldn't beat, Ryuen actually had the patience to wear them down for a whole week, even following them to the bathroom, pestering them until they finally surrendered.

He really is a rare talent. On top of that, Sakagami Kazuma could see the ambitious fire burning in his eyes—this guy was seriously obsessed with getting into Class A. He even dared to make promises to the whole class, and it was those promises that moved Sakagami Kazuma.

If there's ever a chance in the future, Sakagami Kazuma figured he'd probably help this student without hesitation.
