As if sensing Kelsey's gaze, the woman suddenly stopped.
She held a phone in one hand, with delicate features and a spoiled kind of beauty. She glanced at Kelsey quickly, then spoke softly into the phone, "I'm waiting for you at the hospital."
She hung up the phone and then reached out her hand to Kelsey, smiling, "Hello, I'm Elise."
Kelsey was taken aback for a moment, then reached out her hand, a little surprised. "Hello, I'm Kelsey…"
Elise only shook hands briefly and then quickly pulled her hand back. She frowned just a little and looked at Kelsey's non-threatening appearance. The corners of her mouth relaxed. "It seems I misunderstood. Just now, you were staring at me, and I thought you were one of my fans who recognized me and wanted an autograph."
At her words, Kelsey's hand, which had just shaken Elise's, suddenly felt warm, and her face turned red. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to stare at you."
She pressed her lips together and spoke honestly, "I accidentally overheard Miss Collins on the phone just now, and I heard a familiar name… I'm sorry to bother you."
Elise smiled politely, showing she didn't mind. "That was a misunderstanding. I was just talking to my fiancé on the phone. He doesn't have many female friends around him, and I know all of them, so it shouldn't be someone you know. You must've misheard."
Kelsey nodded at her words, her gaze dropping to Elise's slightly rounded belly. Her eyes flickered. "Then I must have misheard."
Elise held her sunglasses in her hand and noticed where Kelsey was looking. She touched her belly and smiled. "You probably guessed it, didn't you? I'm pregnant. I think you'll hear good news from me soon."
"Congratulations, Miss Collins."
"Thank you… but can you keep it a secret for me?" Elise looked a little hesitant and watched her with hope.
"I won't tell anyone," Kelsey replied.
Watching Elise's back as she walked away, Kelsey let out a shallow breath.
She knew Elise. She was the famous beauty with a perfect family background, stunning looks, and an elite education. She was also Rhett's ex-girlfriend and first love.
Rhett might not know, but Kelsey went to the same school as him before. Their worlds were totally different, though.
She could only watch him from a distance, never thinking that one day she would marry him.
Kelsey suddenly remembered how she and Rhett got together:
A few months ago, she was in the hospital with Dexter during his chemotherapy, stressing out over the medical bills. She saw a man standing alone in the hallway, like he was taking a break.
She just wanted to find a quiet place to cry, but when she looked up, she met Rhett's gaze.
He was smoking, and the tips of his fingers were lit with tiny sparks. The rising white smoke framed his deep black eyes, making them seem even more calm and intense, like a still ocean that didn't have a single ripple.
Kelsey felt like she would never forget that moment. She even forgot to cry.
Rhett saw her, put out his cigarette, and suddenly walked toward her.
When his tall figure cast a shadow over her, he asked in a low voice, "Will you marry me? I can give you whatever you want."
She nodded without thinking.
Maybe it was because of her long-time crush on him that she didn't even ask why he wanted to marry her.
She was scared that if she did, the dream she had been holding onto would break right there and then.
...In the hospital room.
Dexter looked weak, but his mood was good.
Kelsey sat beside him, peeling an apple. The knife in her hand almost slipped and cut her finger. Dexter couldn't help but speak up, "Sister, did you have a fight with your husband? You look so distracted…"
He was about to reach out when he suddenly caught a glimpse of a familiar figure outside the room and shouted happily, "Brother-in-law!"
Kelsey froze, and the apple peel dropped to the floor.
Dexter had only met Rhett once.
On the day they got their marriage license, Rhett treated Dexter to a meal.
In public, he maintained the image of a polite gentleman with perfect manners and upbringing, leaving a good impression on Dexter.
At this moment, Kelsey stared at Dexter, her breath caught in her throat.
Why was Rhett here?
He hadn't even answered her phone call earlier.
Dexter didn't notice Kelsey's unease and happily waved toward the door, "Brother-in-law!"
However, the man outside the door just passed by without stopping.
Dexter then lowered his arm, feeling confused. "Sister, did my brother-in-law come to the wrong place?"
As he spoke, he was about to get out of bed and call out to him.
Kelsey suddenly reacted, "Don't go!"
Rhett had just mentioned divorce to her this morning, and his visit might not necessarily be for her. If Dexter rushed over to him, it could lead to conflict.
Dexter was really protective of her, but he was too young and impulsive. She didn't want him to cause trouble.
She and Rhett were about to divorce, and she didn't want any complications right now.
At the very least, Dexter's medical expenses couldn't afford any mistakes.
Dexter frowned and looked at her. "Sis, tell me the truth. Did you have a fight with your husband?"
Kelsey's eyes flickered. "Don't overthink it. We're doing fine."
Seeing that he wanted to ask more, Kelsey quickly stood up. "I'll go ask the doctor if there's anything we need to be aware of. You rest here."
"Sis!"
Kelsey closed the door, shutting out Dexter's voice from the hospital room.
She let out a sigh of relief and turned around, only to see a familiar yet unfamiliar person standing at the end of the hallway.
Rhett looked over at her, his face as refined and elegant as ever, but without any emotion.
He stared at Kelsey, seemingly without any warmth, and after a moment, walked over to her.
"Here to see Dexter?" The man walked up to her and glanced at the room number on the door.
Kelsey made a sound of agreement, noticing the test report in his hand. Her eyes flickered with uncertainty. "Why did Mr. Clark come to the hospital? Is he here for a check-up? Is he feeling unwell?"
…Mr. Clark?
When he heard that name, the man furrowed his brow slightly.
When they had just gotten their marriage license, Kelsey used to call him that.
After living together, she came to him hesitantly and asked, "Mr. Clark… can I not call you Mr. Clark? It seems so unfamiliar between husband and wife."
He wasn't someone who cared about those small things and casually replied, "Whatever you like."
But he didn't expect to hear that title from her mouth again a few months later.
Rhett was surprised and wasn't used to her change.
Just as he was about to speak, he remembered that he had already filed for divorce and stopped himself, only curling his lips coldly and saying, "You know best about my physical condition, don't you?"
Kelsey was stunned for a moment and saw the same intense gaze in his eyes as last night, and then she understood, "Mr. Clark…"
Seeing the sudden blush on her face, Rhett felt a strange sense of satisfaction.
It seemed like she should be like this now — a little dumbfounded, a little shy, and easy to embarrass.
It looked pleasing to his eyes, at least… pleasing to his eyes.
