Chapter 28 - Chapter 27: A Throne of Shadows and Flame

Seraphina stared at the crown in her hands—silver edged in black obsidian, glowing faintly under the strange storm above. It was heavy. Not in weight, but in meaning. With it came lifetimes of memories, wounds carved into time, and a power older than the empire itself.

The Empress—her other self—stood silent, eyes gleaming.

"You're not meant to wear it yet," the Empress said. "But time has never followed rules in this world."

Around them, the army hesitated. Seraphina's forces looked between the two women with growing confusion. Some knelt instinctively. Others stood frozen.

Vale approached cautiously, hand still on his sword.

"What is this, Seraphina?" he asked. "Some kind of illusion? Possession?"

She turned toward him, her voice calm yet different—layered.

"No. It's truth."

The Empress smiled faintly. "She remembers now."

Seraphina nodded slowly. "Pieces of me… were torn apart and scattered. This world, this story—it wasn't fiction. It was rewritten history."

The Empress gestured, and illusions danced in the air—visions of the past.

The court before its fall. A young Empress, laughing. The betrayal of the heroine, cloaked in white. The three so-called male leads pledging loyalty… then deserting her for a lie.

And finally—her death. On her knees. Alone.

"I was rewritten," the Empress said softly, "but I never truly died. My soul was splintered. You are the last piece."

Suddenly, Seraphina saw her clearer. The woman before her wasn't a monster or villainess. She was the broken heart of an empire trying to make herself whole again.

Seraphina turned back to the gathered men.

Auren, her loyal aide, knelt.

Others slowly followed. Even General Rhess, once one of the heroine's defenders, bowed his head.

But then—a tremor shook the ground.

And from the palace, a glow erupted.

White light.

"She's here," the Empress murmured, her smile fading.

The heroine stepped onto the battlefield. Dressed in white, light coalescing around her like armor, her face twisted in something that wasn't quite a smile.

"I see you finally met yourself," she said mockingly. "But it's too late. You don't belong in this world anymore. And neither does your shadow."

She raised her hand, light magic pulsing like a sun.

Vale stepped in front of Seraphina. "Get back—"

"No," Seraphina said firmly.

She stepped forward. Her body glowed now—not with darkness, but with a fusion of shadow and light. The powers of both selves.

"I was made in fire and lies. But I'll end this in truth."

She raised the crown high—and shadows wrapped around her like a living cloak, answering her call.

The Empress watched, pride in her eyes.

"You've finally awakened."

And as the light and shadow collided across the battlefield, Seraphina took her first step not as a fragment—

But as the true Empress reborn.
