To the world, it's a way of expressing love, and lovers can't stay apart from it, even just during dating - before marriage, generally referred to as sex.
To religious communities it has a name and is a vice; done before marriage - fornication, outside marriage-adultery, and within marriage - a sacred way of sealing the marriage and expressing love.
