Chapter 17 - ch-7 The Camp

In the heart of the forest, a delicate water droplet clung to the edge of a leaf, sparkling like a tiny diamond in the dappled sunlight that filtered through the canopy above.

The air was heavy with the scent of damp earth and greenery, and the gentle rustle of leaves seemed to lull the forest into a peaceful slumber.

Suddenly, the tranquility was shattered by the sound of pounding footsteps, the vibrations echoing through the forest floor.

I came into view, running at full speed, my feet pounding the earth with a rhythmic intensity. As I sprinted past the leaf, the wind generated by my speed swept through the forest, rustling leaves and snapping twigs.

The water droplet, dislodged by the turbulence, fell through the air, its descent accelerated by the rush of air.

Birds, startled by the sudden commotion, took to the skies, their wings beating rapidly as they fled the disturbance.

The trees blurred together as I ran, their branches swaying in the wind created by my passage.

The rustling of leaves and snapping of twigs beneath my feet served as a reminder of the dense woods I had traversed earlier.

My breath came in ragged gasps, and my heart pounded in my chest, but I didn't slow down.

As I ran, the fading sunlight casting long shadows across the forest floor, I thought to myself, "I should get to the camp before it's too dark."

The trees seemed to grow taller and darker, their shadows deepening as the sun dipped below the horizon.

Finally, I saw a figure standing in the distance, waiting for someone. As I looked closer, my eyes straining to make out the features, I saw that it was Drake.

A warm smile spread across my face "Gramps! I'm here!" I exclaimed, waving my hand enthusiastically.

Drake turned to me, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he took in my disheveled appearance. "Aries!" he said with a relaxed face, his deep voice a mix of relief and amusement.

When I reached him, he put his hands on my shoulders, his calloused palms a comforting presence.

"Where were you? What took you so long? I was worried that something might have happened to you," he said, his voice tinged with a worried tone that betrayed his calm demeanor.

I forced a reassuring smile, trying to alleviate his concerns. "Just got lost in the forest, that's it, Gramps," I said, trying to sound nonchalant despite the turmoil brewing inside me.

Drake's piercing gaze locked onto mine, his eyes narrowing into slits as he scrutinized my face with an intensity that made me shift uncomfortably.

The forest around us seemed to fade into the background, leaving only the two of us, suspended in a moment of awkward silence. "Anything bothering you, Gramps?" I asked, my voice laced with amusement, trying to break the tension.

Drake's gaze didn't waver, his expression unreadable, like a mask carved from granite.

"Umm... I've been meaning to ask you... what did you do to your face?" he asked, his deep voice tinged with curiosity, the rumble of his words vibrating through the air. "I barely recognized you."

I looked at him, confusion etched on my face like a puzzle I couldn't quite solve. "What do you mean, Gramps?" I replied, my brow furrowed in concern, the creases on my forehead deepening as I tried to decipher the meaning behind his words.

Drake chuckled, a deep rumble that shook his belly, and his eyes crinkled at the corners, the laughter lines etched on his face like a map of his joy.

"You... your face is covered in mud! What did you do? Roll around in a pigsty or were you wrestling a pig?" he asked, his voice dripping with teasing sarcasm, his words laced with a playful jab that made me feel like a kid caught with mud on their face.

I raised an eyebrow, my expression skeptical, as I touched my cheek with my palm. The rough texture of the mud registered on my skin, and my eyes widened in surprise as I looked at my mud-caked hands.

The realization dawned on me like a slap in the face, and I felt a flush rise to my cheeks. "Whaaaaaaaaaat?!" I exclaimed, my voice echoing through the forest like a bird taking flight. "I didn't notice it? This whole time?!"

Drake burst out laughing, his body shaking with mirth, the sound of his laughter like music to my ears, infectious and joyful.

I stood before him, my face twisted in anger and annoyance, my entire body seeming to ignite with majestic flames that danced across my skin like a wildfire.

My teeth ground together in frustration, the sound like gravel crunching beneath my feet.

Anger and annoyance simmering beneath the surface like a pot about to boil over. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" I muttered, my voice barely audible.

I paused, then

"don't just stand there laughing, you old geezer! Do something!" I shouted, my voice raw with irritation, the words tumbling out of my mouth like a torrent.

Drake's laughter ceased abruptly, and with a flick of his wrist, a massive amount of water came crashing down on me, like a waterfall unleashed from the heavens.

The flames were extinguished in an instant, but I stumbled backward, my feet flying out from under me like a puppet with its strings cut.

I landed with a thud in a sitting position, my back against a tree trunk, my legs splayed out before me like a rag doll.

I raised my hand, wrapping my fingers around the wrist that had doused me with water, annoyance etched on my face like a dark cloud threatening to unleash a storm.

"What's the meaning of this, Gramps?" I demanded, my voice low and menacing, with a hint of petulance that made Drake's eyes twinkle with mirth.

Little tears of frustration sparkled in the corners of my eyes, and my face twisted in a scowl that could curdle milk at a hundred paces.

Drake smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement, like a mischievous imp reveling in my misery. "Be grateful, brat, I just removed all the mud from your face,"

he said, his voice dripping with teasing sarcasm. "You're welcome, by the way. I know it's not every day someone gets to experience the thrill of being drenched by a geriatric water-wielding wizard."

I raised an eyebrow, my expression skeptical, as I gazed at him with a mixture of annoyance and incredulity. "Is this called cleaning or harassing?"

I asked, my tone laced with sarcasm, like a razor-sharp wit slicing through the air. "I'm not sure which one I'm more grateful for – the mud removal or the impromptu baptism."

Drake chuckled, unfazed by my annoyance, his laughter like a warm breeze on a summer day.

"Hahaa, anyways, I've prepared dinner, Aries. Come, let's go," he said, his voice booming through the forest, like a dinner bell ringing out across the trees.

I glared at him, my eyes narrowed into slits, but eventually, I pushed myself up from the ground, brushing off my pants with a flourish, like a gentleman dusting off his coat after a long ride.

We began walking towards the camp, the warm glow of the fire pit beckoning us from the edge of the forest.

As we walked, my gaze drifted to the golden chain around my neck, the pendant that Cleya had given me, and a soft smile spread across my face like a sunrise.

"hmmm..." I whispered, my voice barely audible, as I touched the pendant with my fingers.

Drake, walking alongside me, noticed the movement and raised an eyebrow.

"By the way, I'm getting a scent of a girl from you. What were you doing really?" he asked, his voice laced with curiosity, like a detective sniffing out a clue.

I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant, like a suspect denying all allegations.

"Nahh, you must be imagining it," I said, my voice smooth as silk, as I pushed the pendant back inside my clothes, like a secret hidden away from prying eyes.
