Chapter 413 - 4

This is all stated plainly, but the spiritual half of the operation is more opaque. From what you can gather, Heinrik simultaneously intends to cleanse the local Umbra of "unruly native spirits" and replace them with servants of Fenris, though if he explains anywhere how he plans to do that, you can't find it. Heinrik is cocky but he's not such a fool that he's putting words like "Umbra" or "caern" online; everything is veiled in pop-neopaganism.

On several occasions, Heinrik addresses militant anarchists and fringe environmentalists that he obviously thinks he can "flip." He's clever and subtle, weaving together an Apocalyptic vision that pits good and simple people willing to defend their land on one side and the machinations of industrialists, bankers, and the military forces they control on the other. He also presents a kind of anarchist agrarian/pastoralist "world of healing" after the war is won, where small, self-sufficient communities "maintain themselves in accordance with Nature."

But from what you can understand, most of his arguments are directed at other Cultists of Fenris who have completely rejected cooperation with humanity in favor of returning to the "Impergium," the mythical culling of human populations that Black Tarn said happened in prehistory. Neither Clay nor Scarper believed in the Impergium, but these other Cultists do, and they call Heinrik a collaborator and a monkey's-paw.

You do find one interesting concrete fact. A forum poster who is almost certainly another Cultist asks, why Western Massachusetts? And Heinrik answers in a straightforward and bewildering fashion: because of how the locals failed at Vermont Yankee.

Vermont Yankee was a nuclear power plant just over the northern border, within the Broad Brook Caern's territory. It was shut down in 2014. Clay told you that the "great caern" to the east destroyed it, and their victory encouraged him and his pack to bring down the pipeline. So what the hell is Heinrik talking about? You consider heading up there, but that sounds like the sort of place that calls for a whole pack of werewolves. So, not yet.

It's time to find Podge. I text Elton and Nin.

Where can I find Melodie Palys? I ask Elton.

I pay some money to keep the cops off my trail.

I need to buy more clothes. I go shopping.

I check in on Elton to make sure he's healing cleanly after his fight with Heinrik.

I see if I can track down Nin.

I find Roscoe's van.

I visit Hobland at his compound.

I visit Lucinda at her studio.

I head into the deep woods.

I return to the barrows where I fought the fomor.

I return to the stretch of urban blight where I spilled out after looking for the caern. Maybe I can find something there.

I check my phone.
