Back to the Party
I took a closer look at Alex standing just in front of me, my eyes taking in his appearance, which looked more like that silly bastard from two years ago. Even now, he looked more light-skinned in complexion.
"Have we met before?" I asked, confused.
He blinked and adjusted his neat grey suit.
"Not at all, my lady," he replied with a smile.
But his reply wasn't sufficient to satisfy my heart. I know that guy wore black shades that day, but I could still picture what his face looked like, which hadn't left my heart. And this man here, looked just like him.
"Are you sure we didn't meet on a beach or something, two years ago?" I asked, hoping to jog his memory.
He shrugged, I could see the confusion on his face. "I've never met you before. This is my first time," he said again, leaning in a little closer.
"I must say I'm impressed. You're as beautiful as the morning sun, a true image of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty," he added, his voice soft and charming.
I smiled. "You sure have your way with words, don't you?" I said, and he chuckled, wrapping my arms around his.
"It's nice to finally meet the goddess of beauty in person. I had long waited for this day a long time now," he teased, taking a side glance at me.
I lifted my head to meet his gaze. "I must say, I'm also happy I finally met you in person too. You are not bad-looking either," I commented, with the same sweet words as he had used on me.
We both let out a soft chuckle.
"Shall we?" He invited, and I nodded in response.
I walked with Alex, wrapped in his arms, not because I wanted to, but because Enzo was still on his knees, silent all this time. I wanted him to feel what it felt like to be betrayed. Even though we were already divorced, I wanted him to understand the pain.
The pains of being neglected and treated like worthless trash.
This was only the beginning of what he deserved. He chose his mistress over me, insulted me for a commoner who wouldn't dare speak when I did or even walk where I walked.
As I held on to Alex, his scent filled my nose, clean and strong, mixed with something like leather. It was the kind of scent that could attract any woman. He looked much better than I had thought earlier.
He was handsome. His eyebrows were perfectly shaped, his dark curly hair fell forward just right. His broad shoulders fit his muscular frame. He was every girl's dream.
We walked out with smiles on our faces.
I never spared Enzo a glance because he never worth it.
As we approached the main entrance, my thoughts tugged at me.
I gasped. "Please, if you wouldn't mind, I want to step aside and call Mum. She isn't here yet," I said, taking out my phone to dial her lines.
But he stopped me half way.
"Never mind, just come along, my lady. Your mum is already waiting for you," he said, taking my arms again, and I walked along with him in a daze.
Then I spotted Mum by the entrance of the hall, a smile on her face as soon as she saw us coming.
"Mum, what kept you so long?" I asked.
Her arms clutched to her brown knee-length gown that had a flow down her knees, embroidered with costly sparkling diamonds, such that gave her the taste of pure luxury, as she always loved.
"My princess, I'm so sorry. I was hooked up with an unintended situation that needed my attention at the moment," she tried to explain.
And I gasped. "Mum, you almost got me scared."
"How, princess?"
"You called, and when I called back, the line went through, then got cut off. After that, I couldn't reach you again. I thought something had happened," I explained, and she gently rubbed my arm.
"I'm sorry you had to feel that way on your special day. But don't worry, I'm always with my guards. Nothing bad will happen to me," she said, glancing between me and Alex, who was still smiling.
"Don't you see how perfect you two look together?" she said with a knowing smile. I already knew where this was going, so I quickly changed the topic.
"Mum, I know. Shall we go inside? Everyone must be waiting," I said, trying to be polite.
"Sure, my princess," she asserted, leading the way.
Anyone who sees the way I was adored outside in public would think my heart was also adored in secret.
Just then, Alex stopped, turning to me, a broad smile tugged to his face. "Please, my lady, can Mum accompany you inside the hall?" he paused, showing his phone.
"I have an important call to take now," he said and then looked up towards Mum.
"Sure, I would," Mum replied without hesitation, already taking my arms in a wrap around hers.
"I won't take much time. I will be back before you know it, my lady," Alex said softly, turning to leave in the opposite direction.
"Shall we?" Mum invited, and I responded with a smile.
As we walked into the hall, all eyes were drawn towards us. Mum, proud as ever, held me close. Her smile grew even bigger.
We looked exactly like the image everyone expected; graceful, wealthy, admired. The air itself seemed filled with luxury. The perfect expression my parents always wanted.
The announcer suddenly announced our entrance again, and the hall filled with loud roars of excitement and compliments.
I continued walking alongside Mum, maintaining those smiles on my perfected makeup face.
But beneath that smile I plastered on my face was something much deeper than I could describe. I couldn't tell for sure, but I knew there was more to everything.
I turned to search for Alex. He wasn't back yet…
