Chapter 13 - Chapter 013 Let the Tumor Grow a Little Longer

"What amusing thing happened?" Lin Jie asked with a smile.

Luo Shanshan animatedly explained, "This morning, Director Jiang, Ren Jianzhong, and I accompanied Dr. Wolfgang for breakfast and ward rounds, with Ren Jianzhong acting as the translator!"

"It's true, people fear not recognizing true value, but comparing it with other goods highlights it even more!"

"Ren Jianzhong translated hesitantly, and many times his words didn't convey the meaning accurately. I noticed that Director Jiang and Dr. Wolfgang frowned several times."

With a chuckle, she continued, "Just now, Dr. Wolfgang, in not-so-fluent English, said he wishes you would be the translator!"

"Haha... Ren Jianzhong always acts superior, looking down on everyone else, and now he's finally embarrassed!"

Luo Shanshan patted Lin Jie on the shoulder and said, "Come with me to the small conference room. Dr. Wolfgang is going to explain Qian Guanglin's surgical plan to us in detail!"

Upon arriving at the small conference room, Lin Jie found it already filled with twenty to thirty doctors.

Seeing the white coats and smelling the familiar scent of disinfectant, he felt a familiar, comfortable sensation as if he were home.

Lin Jie realized that this was the influence of Shen Lanruo's memories on him.

His gaze moved to the right wall, where a 1-meter by 2-meter medical viewing lightbox was hanging, already filled with CT images.

From the images, it was clear that this tumor was quite large.

It had occupied more than half of the space within the spinal canal, with its edges intricately entangled with the nerve fibers inside the canal.

What a tricky surgery, Lin Jie thought upon seeing the images for the first time.

Yesterday, he had virtually participated in the discussions between Dr. Wolfgang, Jiang Yiran, and Luo Shanshan, making him quite familiar with the case.

Looking at the images of this spinal canal tumor, Lin Jie pondered over the surgical plan Wolfgang had revealed yesterday, feeling that the plan seemed quite risky.

He silently asked, "Sister Lanruo, with your understanding of Wolfgang's medical skills, is there a good chance of success for this difficult surgery?"

After a pause, Shen Lanruo's voice replied, "For doctors, gauging the chance of success is a very complex issue!"

"For example, post-op recovery is one measure of success, partial numbness of one leg is another, or even the loss of male function could be considered a form of success!"

"The percentage a doctor tells a patient represents only their subjective judgment and confidence regarding the surgery."

"In practice, a surgery with a ten percent chance of success could result in success, while one with a hundred percent chance could fail. It is closely related to the surgeon's condition and any unforeseen circumstances during the operation."

"This surgery is extremely challenging, and Wolfgang's greatest trait is his stability; he won't make major mistakes!"

"I can only assure you that the patient's condition will definitely improve after the surgery."

"However, during the procedure, some nerve fibers will inevitably be irreversibly damaged, and only post-op examinations will reveal what parts of the patient might have been injured!"

Just then, Wolfgang entered the conference room, accompanied by Jiang Yiran and a tall male doctor.

Upon seeing Lin Jie, Wolfgang smiled brightly and gave him a warm hug!

Without any formalities or preliminaries, Wolfgang connected his laptop to the projector and directly opened a PowerPoint presentation!

As the translator, Lin Jie held the microphone, quickly and accurately translating Wolfgang's words into Chinese.

This time, Lin Jie fully understood the surgical plan.

He was surprised to find that, to reduce the complexity of the surgery, Wolfgang had chosen to actively sever a dozen nerve fibers tangled with the tumor in the spinal canal.

As Lin Jie translated this, a low hum of discussion arose in the conference room.

Anticipating this, Wolfgang explained that severing these nerve fibers was the result of careful consideration, being the option with the least damage. He welcomed any better solutions from others.

"Dr. Wolfgang, would making a new opening from the left side of the third lumbar vertebra avoid the nerve damage in your plan?" Luo Shanshan immediately stood up and asked.

"I considered this possibility!"

Wolfgang walked over to the viewing lightbox and pointed at a CT image, saying, "Making an opening here in the lumbar vertebra seems to avoid these nerve fibers, but inevitably injures..."

Several doctors then offered new insights and objections, which Wolfgang addressed in detail.

At this point, the tall male doctor who had accompanied Wolfgang stood up, scanned the room, and said, "The solutions you've suggested either increase the complexity of the surgery or greatly extend its duration, thus increasing the risk of complications."

In a disdainful tone, he said, "Can none of you propose more constructive, innovative ideas?"

"The solutions you're suggesting were already considered by Director Jiang and me, even far beyond your suggestions, but there's no feasibility in actual surgical practice!"

A look of admiration appeared on his face, and he raised his voice slightly.

"Dr. Wolfgang's surgical plan sparked an epiphany for me. This spinal canal tumor has already caused severe damage to the body. Why not proactively choose minor damage over major damage?"

"Actively severing these nerve fibers reduces the surgical difficulty by a level, truly a stroke of genius!"

Beside him, Luo Shanshan silently mouthed two words: bastard, bootlicker!

Lin Jie, translating softly beside Wolfgang, immediately guessed that this was Ren Jianzhong.

This person was quite interesting; in just a few words, he had belittled all his colleagues, highlighted Jiang Yiran and himself, and flattered Wolfgang. Such skill!

During the translation, Lin Jie found himself multitasking!

In his mind, he continuously simulated the tumor removal procedure, but the tumor's edges were densely intertwined with the spinal nerve fibers, and any slight error could injure them.

Objectively speaking, Wolfgang's surgical plan resulted in the least damage among Lin Jie's numerous simulations.

Lin Jie couldn't help but indulge in wishful thinking. If the nerve fibers on the northeast side of the fourth lumbar spinal canal could be pushed outward, and nerves in other spots moved a bit, the surgery would become easier...

Suddenly, a thought struck Lin Jie!

Once the idea emerged, it couldn't be suppressed. Unable to restrain himself, Lin Jie directly said to Jiang Yiran, "Director Jiang, I need to see Qian Guanglin's earliest CT images, as well as ones taken at different times!"

Jiang Yiran assumed this was Wolfgang's request, even though all the materials had already been handed over to him.

Nevertheless, Jiang Yiran didn't overthink and said directly, "All of Qian Guanglin's cases and imaging materials are stored in the hospital's networked computer database."

He turned and instructed, "Luo Shanshan, bring up Qian Guanglin's imaging data for Dr. Wolfgang to look at!"

Luo Shanshan used Wolfgang's laptop to connect to the hospital network, bringing up Qian Guanglin's imaging data on the projector.

Lin Jie flipped through the CT scans taken at different times, momentarily forgetting everything else.

His sudden action confused Wolfgang, who quickly approached Jiang Yiran and asked in English, albeit unskillfully, "Why are we showing earlier CT images?"

"Wasn't this your request?" Jiang Yiran was equally surprised!

After reviewing these CT images, Lin Jie, more sure of his thoughts, looked up only to be met with Wolfgang and Jiang Yiran's stern gazes.

Lin Jie was startled, immediately snapping back to reality.

Just now, influenced by Shen Lanruo's consciousness, he had acted like a renowned doctor, somewhat recklessly.

But now, for the sake of the patient, he couldn't retreat, so Lin Jie earnestly said, "Please forgive my rashness, just now I had a new idea and couldn't help myself."

Not waiting for a response, he hurriedly continued, "We all know that tumors are living things, constantly growing and changing. This tumor is too; please look at these CT images..."

Lin Jie narrated the changes observed in these CT images once in Chinese and once in German.

Perhaps his professionalism, calm demeanor, and confidence swayed Wolfgang and Jiang Yiran, who surprisingly did not interrupt him.

"This tumor is growing quite rapidly, but we can clearly see that its edges are still relatively regular, indicating a somewhat benign nature."

Using the mouse, Lin Jie made some marks on the projected CT images, confidently saying, "Based on my estimation, in another week or two, this tumor might push here... and here..."

"If these nerve fibers can be pushed aside then, the surgery's difficulty will greatly decrease!"

"Therefore, I suggest letting this tumor grow for a bit longer!"
