Chapter 15 - An Inexplicable Situation

"Son, we're gonna ask a few questions, I know it's hard for you, but-"

"I understand." Liam was sitting on his bed while police ransacks the dorm room.

Tyler's body, along with three others from the campus had been taken by ambulances, it doesn't feel like any one of them can possibly be saved though, they were already bathing in blood before the ambulances arrived after all.

"Can you describe how this happened?" Liam's dorm room has been marked as active site of investigation, but the officer questioning him allowed him to stay inside while other officers searched the room.

"I woke up, I saw him climbing up the desk, opened the window, and he just...jumped."

"Anything that he said before that?"

"No...no...nothing."

"I see..." The officer wasn't taking any notes, just standing in front of Liam with his hands in his pockets, looking around the room, "Has he always showed signs of being suicidal? Is he quiet or commited self harm in any ways?"

"No."

"Hmph." The police officer looked at Tyler's uncertain face, knelt down to his level and asked, "Are you sure that's all you want to tell me?"

Tyler finally lifted his head, he's considering telling the ridiculous story that he experienced, but he doesn't know what might happen to him.

It's as he mentioned to the other survivors before, reporting could be dangerous, the people behind the games might be too powerful to be messed with. Nonetheless, he really wants to tell it.

"Will you believe me if the story lacks proof?"

"Your job is to give me your perspective of the situation, ours is to find proof."

Liam looked closer at the officer's face and noticed it was somewhat familiar, yet still strange, "Earlier you mentioned your name, Officer Quinn right?"

"That's right." Officer Quinn noticed the curious look on Liam's face, and answered before Liam could ask, "Yes, Jason from this college is my son, we look stupidly alike don't we?"

"Yeah, yeah..."

"He should be around your age."

"We take the same course, he sits behind me during lecture."

"Really?" Officer Quinn stood back up and placed his hands back into his pockets, as if preparing himself for a more casual conversation, "How is he in class? He should be good right?"

"Good...good, yeah, top of the class."

"No, no he's not, he told me he's second to someone else."

"Still pretty much at the top." Liam scores the highest in all tests given so far. They've only been enrolled in college for a month and Liam's already known as the smartest student, he also scored first in entrance exams. Though, he's still not popular due to his gloomy appearance and introverted personality.

"Hmph, that's good." He tilts his head in curiosity, "So what about the unbelievable story without proof you were gonna tell me?"

"Oh...right..."

"YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!" Samantha was giving her story to the investigators in her house, but the investigators chuckled listening to her for how ridiculous she sounded. Samantha's injured right forearm was bandaged up and hung on her neck, while her left fist was clenched in anger.

"Calm down Sam." Heather was beside Samantha on the couch.

"No! They're not listening!"

"Listen, miss, we're sorry, but your groundless story simply doesn't connect any dots." The investigator apologised for the disrespect they've unintentionally shown, they didn't mean to ridicule Samantha, a victim who just got her father taken away from her.

"It's the truth! What more do you want?!" Samantha asserted with watery eyes and quavering voice.

"Okay! Okay! Calm down, alright? Let me summarise what I've heard, please sit down."

"Baby, just sit down."

Samantha was reluctant, but she sat back down on the couch in the end after Heather pulled on the hem of her pajamas.

"Okay, here's what we got so far okay? You and your father played a game of Would You Rather at a weird website. You both chose the option where you have to survive in an abandoned mall-"

"It wasn't abandoned, it was just empty, but it still had stocks, items for sale and stuff..."

"Okay, an empty shopping mall. You had to survive with your father and around 100 more in this empty shopping mall that had rabid dogs the size of an average man, with the strength to bite off limbs effortlessly. Am I catching it?"

Samantha nods.

"Alright, your father died to one of these dogs, and yet the next day you woke up back in your bedroom, and your father was still alive. Your father then spoke no words, walked towards the kitchen, picked up a knife and stabbed himself."

"We tried stopping him."

"And you tried stopping him. So the mall, you said it happened last night?"

Samantha nodded again.

"And you said you slept with him last night, in your bedroom on the same bed?" The officer questioned Heather.

"He definitely got in the same bed as me, and was asleep in the bed when I got out. But I can't be too sure if he's there for the whole night."

"Okay. And you said you have no proof, no cameras in the bedrooms?"

Both Samantha and Heather nodded.

"How about that one, can we check the footage of that camera?" The officer questioned while pointing at the camera on the corner of the living room.

"That is indeed...one unbelievable story." Officer Quinn commented after hearing the story from Liam, "You have anything to prove what you said?"

"I believe I was kidnapped, if I was, there should be fingerprints on me and this room that shouldn't exist."

"We'll run that test for sure, but even rookies will know to wear gloves you know?"

"It's worth a shot."

Officer Quinn sighs, his workload just grew substantially due to this case. There's a part of him that believes the absolutely ridiculous story of Liam, as it's a probable cause of the current inexplicable situation.

"There's definitely hundreds more suicide cases without reason around Chicago today. My story can explain that. Is there not?" Liam questioned, he had already caught Officer Quinn's thoughts of his stories.

"You'll know soon from the news, not from me."

"There is and you know it, it's not a coincidence, I'm even willing to bet everyone commited suicide at similar times." Liam claimed confidently.

Officer Quinn hesitated for a moment, he sighed in the end and said, "So what if it explains it, that's not a proof of such a story. In the end, you still can't show me how they commited these suicides. I want to believe you, but I need solid evidence."

"Your solid evidence is the fact that a lot more will present a story similar to mine, ask your colleagues about it. Why would we have the same story?"

"It's more possible all of you orchestrated this story than for anyone or any organisation to orchestrate the game."

Liam grit his teeth slightly in frustration, "Tsk."

"It matches up with what you said." The officer at Samantha's house commented after watching through the security footage of the camera, the footage showed clearly Nick's attempt on suicide, "What's the shady website you mentioned earlier, the one where you played Would You Rather?"

Officer Quinn looked around the room yet again then suggested, "Nonetheless, like I said, I want to believe you. Let's start with the part of your story we can access, show me the website you mentioned."

Both Samantha and Liam types in the URL in their respective computers.
