Chapter 24 - Vestige Of A Distant voice

You are not ready. This is all you can be told... for now." The shadow shimmered again, its form flickering as if struggling to maintain its cohesion, the ethereal light around it dimming and sputtering like a dying flame. "The answers you seek lie further down the path, but you must be strong enough to bear them when you find them. Premature knowledge can be more dangerous than ignorance."

The shadow paused, its featureless face tilting slightly as if in consideration. "I am the one who created the labyrinth you just cleared. I designed every trap, every trial, every temptation you faced within those walls."

Tsuihō was stunned. The labyrinth, the trials, the constant temptations – they were all the creation of this impossible being? What purpose could such a creation serve? "Why?" He managed to choke out, his voice barely a whisper. "Why would you create such a place?"

The shadow's voice resonated, its tone taking on a new weight, a sense of ancient purpose. "I created the labyrinth to test those I would choose, to weed out the weak, to identify those who possessed the potential to carry out a specific mission, a task of paramount importance."

"A mission?" Tsuihō asked, suspicion lacing his tone. He had learned to distrust grand pronouncements, to question the motives of those who offered power or purpose. "What mission? And why me?"

"You are not the first to clear the labyrinth," the shadow replied, ignoring Tsuihō's questions. "Many have come before you, many have proven their strength and cunning. But you… you are the one I have been waiting for. The one with the potential to truly succeed."

"Waiting for?" Tsuihō's confusion deepened. "How could you know I would come here? How could you possibly foresee my arrival?"

The shadow's form flickered again, the projection growing fainter. "Though I say I was waiting for you, I was not waiting for you in particular. I was waiting for someone, someone who, like you, is also from another world."

The words struck Tsuihō like a thunderbolt. Another world? Was this shadow speaking of his past life? Was he not unique in his sudden arrival in this strange land? "Another world?" He repeated, his voice filled with disbelief and a flicker of hope. "You mean… you know about my past?"

The shadow's voice took on a wistful tone, laced with a hint of melancholy. "I, too, am originally from another world, though that is a story for another time. Suffice it to say, I understand the disorientation, the sense of displacement that you must be feeling."

"I understand?" Tsuihō scoffed, the bitterness returning to his voice. "You understand nothing. You are a pre-recorded message, a phantom echoing through the ages."

"Perhaps," the shadow conceded, its form flickering more violently now. "But even a phantom can impart wisdom. Though I left things for those who conquered the labyrinth before you, the things you will receive will be different. You will receive things which will guide you in this world, tools to aid you in your journey, knowledge that will illuminate your path through the darkness. The path you are now on is very, very dark."

"What path?" Tsuihō demanded, his impatience growing. "What is this all about? What am I supposed to do?"

"You will understand everything when the time comes," the shadow replied, its voice growing fainter still. "Trust in your instincts, rely on your strength, and never… never… trust anyone. Remember this as the very foundation of your being... "

The shadow's image flickered violently, its form dissolving into a swirling vortex of light and shadow. Tsuihō lunged forward, desperate to grasp at the disappearing figure, to force it to reveal its secrets, but it was too late.

The shadow shimmered again, as if the projection was struggling, the voice now sounding strained. "Follow the path... the trials have prepared you. Remember, your own choices will lead you to the answers..."

The shadow flickered, its form becoming increasingly unstable. "Seek... the key... understand the crystal..."

And then, as suddenly as it had appeared, the shadow vanished, leaving Tsuihō standing alone in the forest, his knife still raised, his mind reeling with more questions than answers, and the chilling certainty that he had stumbled upon something far more dangerous and far more significant than he could have ever imagined.

The silence returned, heavier, more oppressive than before. He was alone, left with only the dark crystal pulsing softly at the base of the tree and the echoing words of the shadow figure.

Too weak…

Follow the path…

The shadow vanished, leaving Tsuihō standing alone in the silent forest, his mind reeling with a torrent of unanswered questions.
