Highway Star couldn't remain in one place forever.
After draining the life force from several squads, Ishiki Kujo directed Highway Star to relocate —
toward the Land of Lightning, closer to the borders of Frost Village.
That's right.
Even though the Land of Frost was ravaged by war, it still had its own shinobi force.
But ever since the major nations chose this country as their battlefield, Frost Village had shrunk into the shadows.
Unlike Konoha, separated by the Land of Hot Springs, Frost Village was openly friendly with Kumogakure.
Their shinobi acted like mercenaries for Cloud,
making them no different from enemies in Ishiki's eyes.
Cloud or Frost, it made no difference to him —
both were prey for Highway Star.
Along the roads, Highway Star drifted like a phantom,
setting traps in abandoned houses or caves, draining the life from careless shinobi, then moving again.
Like a ghost wandering the Land of Frost, luring, hunting, feasting.
Cloud's intelligence units lagged behind,
but Frost Village had started noticing strange disappearances, dispatching squads to investigate.
Ishiki, of course, knew none of this.
On the fifth day after sending his letter, he still hadn't received a reply from Gai —
but he did see Gai's squad appear at the outpost.
The leader was a jōnin Ishiki didn't know well — Kuriyama Yako.
But the squad members?
He knew them all:
Might Guy, of course, along with the cocky Genma Shiranui, and the ever-squinting Ebisu.
"We were passing by on a mission," Gai explained, unusually calm for once.
"Since you needed help with a Summoning Beast, we figured we'd stop by."
"Thanks, man." Ishiki clapped Gai's shoulder.
Gai didn't waste time.
He immediately performed the summoning seals and slammed his palm to the ground.
Summoning Jutsu: Ninja Turtle!
Poof!
A cloud of white smoke erupted.
From it emerged a massive red turtle, a Konoha forehead protector tied around its thick neck.
"What's the situation, Gai-boy?"
The giant turtle rumbled, eyes sharp, constantly scanning the surroundings.
"This friend of mine needs some help, Boss Taira," Gai said, full of respectful deference.¹
Boss Taira turned to Ishiki.
In Ishiki's hands was his own small green turtle — President.
"Boss Taira, I'd like to turn my companion into a ninja turtle.
Please, would you help me?"
Ishiki's posture was respectful, voice sincere —
a man asking a favor properly.
Boss Taira peered at the small turtle, then at Ishiki.
"A companion?
It looks like a normal turtle to me."
"It's true.
But President has been with me since I was little," Ishiki lied smoothly, not blinking.
"He's got great potential."
Nearby, Gai looked bewildered.
They had grown up together.
He'd never seen Ishiki with a pet turtle before!
But Gai didn't expose him.
Instead, he smiled and nodded along.
Boss Taira continued inspecting President.
His expression shifted slightly when he noticed the small depression in President's shell.
"That dent was already there when I found him in the wild!"
Ishiki explained quickly.
"My sister even used medical ninjutsu to heal him back then."
Gai twitched.
Was Ishiki dragging Hina into this story too?
Still, under Boss Taira's gaze, Gai nodded.
Maybe Ishiki's family had kept this turtle hidden at home.
Maybe.
Boss Taira stopped questioning, focused fully on examining President.
After a long moment, he finally spoke:
"His potential is real.
With effort, he could become a proper ninja turtle."
Ishiki's eyes lit up.
"How long would it take?"
"At least three years.
Maybe five," Boss Taira said.
"It depends on talent and dedication."
Ishiki's enthusiasm dimmed a little.
"That long?
Would he have to stay with you the whole time?"
"He can train on Turtle Island," Boss Taira offered.
"There, his progress will be faster."
Seeing Ishiki's worry, he added:
"You don't need to worry too much.
Even before he becomes a full ninja turtle, you can establish a summoning contract.
Once bonded, you'll be able to summon him at any time."
"Wait — even before he's a full-fledged ninja beast?"
Boss Taira rolled his eyes.
"I said he needs to be an official ninja turtle to be fully recognized.
But as long as he learns basic energy control, a few days is enough to form the bond."
Relief flooded Ishiki's chest.
"Thank you, Boss Taira."
Still, a new question gnawed at his mind.
Boss Taira had mentioned energy —
not chakra.
Was it related to natural energy?
Senjutsu?
It reminded Ishiki that chakra itself was linked to the God Tree.¹⁶
Animals cultivated energy differently from humans.
Maybe President truly had a gift for it?
"Alright, Gai-boy," Boss Taira rumbled.
"I'll stay here for now."
"Huh? Oh, uh, okay," Gai stammered.
"You go finish your missions.
I'll take care of training him."
Boss Taira had already slipped into his teacher persona,
his huge red shell brimming with gravitas.
Ishiki was more than happy to hand over responsibility.
Dragging Gai aside, he whispered:
"Tell me about the ninja turtles."
Gai, always straightforward, didn't hide anything:
"The Ninja Turtle Clan originally signed a contract with my old man," Gai said.
"Later, it passed down to me.
I've only ever summoned Boss Taira, though —
so I don't know much about the others."
"But I do know their training ground is Turtle Island —
which is literally a gigantic turtle floating on the sea."
