Chapter 14 - Interlude 2: Beginnings of War

It's already been a month since I was reincarnated.

A month of drooling, fidgeting and putting up with adults who are convinced that a stupid smile can melt your brain.

Pathetic.

My abilities improved - fortunately. With time, I managed to half-open my eyes, and naturally, I was finally able to see what my 'parents' looked like.

And incidentally, me too.

Let's just say they're special... in the sense that there's nothing special about them.

No nobility in their features. No presence.

No richness, no remarkable abilities.

Nothing, in short, emptiness.

What misery.

As for me... well, I'm rather good-looking.

Objectively speaking.

Without lapsing into childish narcissism, let's just say that reincarnation has had the decency not to turn me into a troll.

Except that I have to put up with the suffocating presence of two parents who are far too emotional for their age.

That's right: they're in their sixties.

And having a baby at that age? It's not just irresponsible, it's grotesque. It's an insult to biological logic.

"Yuki, bath time!"

I turn round - slowly, painfully - and there's my 'mother', fully undressed, approaching to drag me into the water.

Jesus... you're a woman.

Have a modicum of decency, I beg you.

I may not understand their language yet, but one thing is clear: my name is 'Yuki'.

How did I guess?

They keep repeating it over and over.

"Yuki' when I wake up. "Yuki' when they rock me. "Yuki' when I breathe.

Do you have a life outside of me? No ?

Get a job, you emotional parasites.

If hell had a shape, this would be it:

Living as a baby, among primitives, with only an intact memory to comfort you.

Just about.

My mother caught me in the flight and carried me, frankly I've given up the idea of running away because clearly I don't have the skills

Speaking of abilities, this voice in my head is always there.

Frankly, it's taught me loads of stuff, it's the only vaguely useful element in this degenerate world it seems.

According to her, I'm a full human, so not a half-human or a monster with three pairs of eyes, no tentacles or grotesque mutations, just a pure and simple human.

By the way, I've picked up a skill, I remember it very well, it's pretty useful and it's Analyse, yeah the basic isekai ability that's given to everyone, but with it I've discovered some crazy things

Firstly, my sister is clearly not human, who knows how, but apparently she's a ...

And then, just as I'm starting to think that this day is just going to drag on like all the others, the door slams shut

My 'father' enters like a tornado, out of breath, eyes round, mouth open as if he's just seen a dragon dancing the samba

He talks fast, too fast, I don't get it, but one word comes back

"child... stolen... neighbour..."

I frown - inwardly, of course

Hang on, hang on

Someone's kidnapped the neighbours' baby?

What's with this parallel script again? What's this peasant drama with a thriller twist?

This world is made of recycled cardboard, seriously

And while my two progenitors are flapping about like decapitated chickens, I'm getting back to basics!

My 'mother' sighed.

"God, ever since the war between the two great religions, it's been unbearable. There are kidnappings everywhere..."

"No need to worry, the System should solve that."

And that was it. Another conversation I only half understand.

I'm missing out on so much information just because I don't understand their bloody language.

In a classic isekai, you've barely set foot in the world before you've got it all - who's king, what monsters to avoid, the value of gold and the state of the fish market.

Me? Nothing.

I have to put up with all the shouting, the whining, and two boomers throwing out bits of lore as if they were re-enacting a local play written by a one-armed man.

My mother sits down, looking overwhelmed.

"I'm afraid for our children..." she says.

And then my father replies, very seriously:

"It's normal. Keren has only been around for a few years. Of course we can't protect ourselves completely from intruders yet.

Keren, eh?

That's the name I heard the first time the System really spoke to me.

From what I understand, it's a country that was founded about ten years ago, after an army of Sariella rebelled.

Coup d'état, escape, founding... a real spin-off origin story.

Sariella, exactly? I've no idea what Sariella is.

But my 'parents' often talk about it.

Probably a neighbouring country. Probably hostile.

And given the frequency with which that name comes up, I'd bet on a bad atmosphere.

"There's no need to get depressed, we're still safe. And as former adventurers, we should know how to defend ourselves."

That's what she said.

Well... I think.

I can't make out a word, but I've learnt to read their eyes and their tone.

It's fascinating how bipeds can believe that shrugging their shoulders makes a lie believable.

She stands up. Grabs me gently.

And throws me into the water.

Are you crazy, you stupid bitch?!

I fall face first, like an old stone thrown into a well.

The water slams into my face, I sink straight down - and I panic.

My arms flapped limply, my legs barely twitched.

And then a second splash.

I turn around as best I can.

It's my sister.

The other miniature ball and chain.

"My father" came closer and took us both in his arms.

"Yuki, Sofia, don't worry, your father will protect you."
