Chapter 19 - Chapter 18 – A Meal That Tastes Different

Jun didn't sleep much that night.

Not because he was worried—but because he wasn't.

The rent was paid.

The roof was safe.

The floor under him wouldn't disappear in the middle of the night.

And safety…was a weight he wasn't used to putting down.

The quiet didn't feel empty.

It felt unfamiliar.

Like a jacket borrowed from someone who'd worn comfort long enough to soften it.

Jun lay on his mattress, eyes half open.

The hum of the city outside his window moved like a song with no urgency.

And for once, he didn't tense with every sound.

The next morning, he stepped outside without rushing.

Tote on his shoulder.

Hands in his pockets.

Not hunting for foot traffic.

Not chasing the first pour.

Just walking.

Letting the city breathe around him.

Letting himself breathe back.

The sidewalks were still cracked.

The traffic still hummed.

The neon still blinked in tired loops above the corner shop.

The baker still shouted about fresh bread from behind the glass—his apron dusted in flour, his voice too loud for the hour.

But somehow—

It all looked lighter.

Jun took a different route.

Not because it was better.

Just because he could.

He passed narrow alleys he hadn't noticed before.

Watched a pigeon fight a plastic bag for space on a lamppost.

Glanced up at a fire escape where someone had hung a pair of red socks like a flag.

And then—a shop window.

Dusty.

Faded.

Half-covered in yellowing flyers.

Inside: a plain metal thermos.

Worn.

Functional.

A dent near the lid.

Still shining under the glass.

A small price tag dangled off its handle—a few dozen Notes.

More than he wanted to spend.

More than he could justify.

But—

Jun smiled faintly.

Not a smirk.

Just the kind of smile that understood its own timing.

Not yet.

Not today.

He wasn't reckless.

Not anymore.He was stable.

And that meant something.

He moved on.

Turned a corner he usually passed too quickly to notice.

And found himself standing in front of a small diner.

The kind of place he never entered.

The kind of place where money felt fragile.

Where sitting down felt like luxury.

Usually, he couldn't justify it.

Too indulgent.

Too… wasteful.

But today—Today felt different.

Today, he stepped inside.

The bell above the door rang with a tired chime.

Booths lined the wall—vinyl cracked at the edges.

The chalkboard menu leaned slightly left.

Smells of coffee, eggs, and something fried floated lazily through the air.

A woman behind the counter looked up.

Pen tucked behind one ear.

Eyes sharp but not unkind.

"Seat yourself," she said.

Jun nodded and slid into a corner booth.

The seat creaked.The table wobbled.

It was perfect.

He ordered something simple.

Black coffee.

Two eggs.

One slice of toast.

Cheap.

Solid.

No extras.

No flourishes.

When the plate arrived, he stared at it for a second.

It wasn't pretty.

Not for pictures.

Not for praise.

But it was—

Real.

Earned.

He ate slowly.

Every bite heavier than it should've been.

Not because it was rich—Because it was his.

No one handed it to him out of pity.

No outreach van.

No surplus kitchen.

Every forkful was brewed from cold mornings, long walks, and careful pours.

Every crumb came from endurance.

He sipped the coffee.

It wasn't great.

But it was hot.

And it was his.

Jun paid without hesitation.

Left exact change.

No guilt.

No second guessing.

He stepped back out into the morning, lighter than when he'd entered.

Not because he was full.

But because—for once—he wasn't empty.

The dripper kit still rested against his shoulder.

The grind was still ahead.

Rent would come again.

Bills would whisper again.

Winter would bite again.

But today—

Today, the street didn't feel like a battlefield.

It felt like a road.

And Jun was still walking it.
