Chapter 32 - Hunted by obligation

Filia handed a bundle of worn-out parchments to Matthew.

Matthew narrowed his eyes as he took them. "What are these?"

Filia, already gathering other documents from the desk, replied, "Reports on illegal gambling houses. Most were shut down after the former king enacted the gambling ban. But recently, two have resumed operations—and are reportedly involved in some shady dealings. His Highness wants you to investigate."

Matthew let out a heavy sigh. "Shouldn't this be the Crown Prince's responsibility? He's the heir to the throne. Why is it falling on us?"

Filia adjusted her glasses, her tone cool. "Then are you planning to refuse His Highness's request?"

Matthew didn't answer. Instead, he sat back and began flipping through the parchments, his expression darkening as he read.

Filia smiled faintly, a soft chuckle escaping her lips. "Thought so."

Maximus swung his sword, sweat dripping down his face as the sun blazed overhead. The royal hunting competition was fast approaching—a prestigious event held annually by the royal family. The victor would be awarded a legendary blade forged by the famed blacksmith, Master Mario.

Every year, without fail, the Crown Prince had claimed the prize.

But this year, Maximus was determined to change that.

As he paused to catch his breath, a familiar voice called out behind him.

"Max!"

Maximus turned, his grip tightening slightly as he saw his elder brother, Crown Prince Alexis, approaching with a leisurely smile.

"What are you doing here, Brother?" Maximus asked, his tone guarded.

Alexis glanced at the sky before letting his gaze fall on the sword in Maximus's hand. "Training with a sword? The competition only allows bows."

Maximus gave a short shake of his head. "I know. I just… needed to clear my mind. Practicing with a bow all day wears thin."

Alexis chuckled lightly. "True. But do you think you can win this time?"

Maximus's expression darkened. "I will try."

Alexis smirked, a trace of amusement in his eyes. "Yeah. You should."

Without another word, he turned and walked away.

Maximus watched his brother's retreating figure, his jaw clenched. He lowered his gaze to his hand, gripping the hilt tightly as if grounding himself.

He would try. And this time, he would not fail.

Serena let out a long sigh. "A hunting competition hosted by the royal family? Do they not have anything better to do?"

Rika, adjusting the blanket at the edge of the bed, gave her a pointed look. "Aren't you saying that just because you don't want to go?"

Serena rolled her eyes in response.

Since the day she got married, she had distanced herself from any household responsibilities or outside duties. Now her boutique was thriving under Robert's capable management—thanks to Aiden's recommendation—and she had decided to take a break from writing as well.

The result? A rather comfortable life of leisure.

Most mornings, she woke late, took her time with breakfast, then strolled through the garden, usually after Dyanne and Rika badgered her to at least get some sunlight. Afterward, she'd retreat to the library, curled up with books until dinner. And once she finished her meal, it was straight to bed—again, with a book or two to keep her company.

This was Serena's current routine in its entirety.

And it was driving Rika and Dyanne up the walls.

"She's turning into a noble cat," Rika once muttered.

"Without the fur," Dyanne had replied, "but just as pampered."

Dyanne stood close beside Serena, her voice quiet but firm. "You have to attend, Your Grace. The royal family extended the invitation to the Selwyns directly."

Serena groaned, leaning back against her chair with clear reluctance. "I suppose I have no choice then… Still, I really don't want to get involved with the royal family. It always ends up being more hassle than it's worth."

For once, both Rika and Dyanne nodded in perfect agreement.
