Chapter 24: Cracks Beneath the Smile
Laughter echoed in the newly reopened cake shop, glasses clinked, frosting smudged on noses, and stories passed between bites of "A Taste of Healing's" signature sweets.
Jacob leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms. "Lisa and I got three days off from work," he said casually. "We were thinking… maybe we could all hang out? Do something fun together before we head back."
The suggestion floated in the air.
Jake's smile faltered—just a flicker—but enough for Alex to notice.
"Oh—wait," Jake said quickly, standing. "I, uh… forgot something outside. I'll be back in a sec."
Before anyone could question, he was out the door.
The air outside was cooler, calmer. Jake leaned against the wall beside the shop, hands in his pockets, head tilted back as he exhaled slowly.
Inside, Alya raised a brow. "Everything okay?"
Alex stood. "Yeah. I'll go check on him." He turned to Jacob and Lisa with a grin. "Hang tight. You guys chat. I'll bring him back."
Outside, Alex found Jake staring into the street, quiet.
"Forgot something?" Alex asked gently.
Jake didn't look at him. "Just needed air."
They stood in silence for a beat.
Then Alex spoke, calm and sure. "You should say yes."
Jake turned to him, eyebrows lifting. "To what?"
"The hangout."
Jake scoffed lightly. "Are you serious? After all that? Watching them flirt over cake? You think I wanna play third wheel to that for three days?"
Alex leaned on the wall beside him. "I think you're tougher than you were. Stronger. And I think… you've been through worse than this."
Jake said nothing, jaw tightening.
Alex continued, "You can avoid it and let it keep eating you. Or you can face it, like you did with the troublemakers, with your past, with the gym. You're not that guy running anymore, Jake."
Jake stayed quiet, staring out.
Then, a small sigh. "I don't know if I can smile through that for three days."
Alex looked over at him, a half-smile forming. "Then don't fake it. Be real. Be you. That's enough."
Jake looked at his friend, the weight in his chest just a little bit lighter.
"…Alright," he said.
