Chapter 48 - Fleeing in panic

Wai Wenbin, seething with anger, hammered on the door with all his might.

In the neighboring 1302, Sun Peng and Wang Xiaoyu were just about to sleep when they heard the banging outside.

Wang Xiaoyu, startled, thought it was their own door being knocked on. But upon hearing Wai Wenbin's shout, she realized it was someone causing trouble for Chu Peipei across the hall.

She clutched Sun Peng's arm. "Peng Ge, someone's banging on the door next door."

Sun Peng, naturally, had heard the noise as well.

He narrowed his eyes. "Isn't that perfect? Someone's taking care of her for us. Too bad the last group only stole the supplies, but didn't take her life. All my efforts were wasted."

Sun Peng was a sly man who never did his own dirty work unless there was an opportunity to backstab someone. He had been watching Chu Peipei for a long time, but even though she was a woman, he hadn't dared to confront her face-to-face. Instead, he had been looking for an opportunity to ambush her.

But Chu Peipei was too cautious, and he had never found a chance.

So, Sun Peng took advantage of the situation when they were out looking for supplies, talking to others, and hinting that 1301 had plenty of food, hoping to use others to deal with her.

However, that group of people had only stolen her supplies and caused her to miscarry, but they hadn't killed her.

He had thought that Chu Peipei was dead by now, but when he saw her again, she was still alive and kicking.

What a tough woman!

Was she made of iron?

Now, seeing someone come to cause her trouble again—banging on the door like they were about to smash it to pieces—Sun Peng couldn't help but feel a sense of joy. This time, she was really finished.

He gleefully pulled Wang Xiaoyu into his arms. "Baby, let's sleep. Let them tear each other apart!"

...

Back inside her apartment, Chu Peipei had naturally heard the banging too.

She had been resting in bed, almost asleep, when the noise startled her awake.

She calmed her racing heart, grabbed the bone-slicing knife by her bedside, and stood up, moving toward the entrance.

Peeking through the peephole, she stared at the swollen face of the man who had come to cause trouble at Annan's place earlier that day.

He was still alive?

When Annan had taken his family's supplies, Chu Peipei thought they had both perished, but now, to her surprise, he was still standing there.

This was so unlike Annan.

But Annan always had her own way of doing things.

Chu Peipei tightened her grip on the knife, thinking about what to do.

If Annan hadn't appeared in time that day, he would have killed her.

There was a natural physical difference between men and women, and she was in no condition to fight. She had recently miscarried and was extremely weak.

If it hadn't been for Annan's protection, she wouldn't have had the courage and strength to fight back.

But now, she wasn't even half of what she was earlier in the day.

After all, she had spent the whole day searching for supplies and then fighting. Now she was completely drained.

Moreover, Wai Wenbin was different from the people she had encountered outside.

Those people had no personal grudge against her; they were just looking for food. If they couldn't get it here, they'd move on to somewhere else. They weren't enemies to the death.

But Wai Wenbin was different. She had ruined his plans today, leading to him being beaten by Annan and turned into a mess.

Just listening to him bang on the door made it clear that he wanted to rip her apart.

Chu Peipei thought for a moment, then put down the bone-slicing knife.

She knew she couldn't win in a direct fight. Her arm muscles were sore from the earlier exertion, and she couldn't lift anything with strength.

Luckily, Annan had given her a nail gun.

It didn't require much strength.

She found the nail gun and aimed at the door, her palms sweaty with nerves.

By this time, Wai Wenbin had already started kicking the door with full force.

His anger was overflowing, and he put all his remaining strength into the blows, not caring about the bleeding shoulder he was ignoring.

The door shook with each forceful kick.

Chu Peipei steadied her hands on the nail gun, trying to keep her focus. She had to make this one shot count. If she missed or couldn't stop him quickly enough, he might grab the gun and she would be in danger.

Her mind sharpened as an idea struck her.

She opened her mouth and shouted loudly:

"Annan, wake up! The man from the 8th floor is back!"

The banging stopped immediately.

Wai Wenbin's face froze in confusion. What was going on?

Annan was sleeping at her place?!

His mind raced.

There was no way Annan would sleep at someone else's place…

Could it be that she guessed he would come for revenge and came to protect Chu Peipei?

Or was Chu Peipei bluffing, trying to scare him off?

His mind spun, unsure of what to think, and he stood there, frozen.

It was impossible to deny how much psychological trauma Annan had inflicted on him.

Every time they fought, not only did he fail to gain an advantage, but his fate became worse and worse.

Chu Peipei heard the noise stop outside, knowing that her bluff had worked.

Got you, you coward.

It seemed that he really feared Annan.

Earlier that day, when it seemed like Wai Wenbin was about to kill her, the moment Annan appeared, he had run away in fear.

That showed just how terrifying Annan was to him.

Chu Peipei, seeing him hesitate outside the door, decided to give him another push.

She shouted again, "Annan, are you awake? Hurry up, he's right outside!"

As she spoke, she carefully backed away toward the bedroom.

Then she intensified her footsteps, pretending to be Annan, walking toward the door.

When she reached the door, she grabbed the handle and slowly opened it.

This was a gamble.

She was betting that he wouldn't dare stay outside any longer.

If he stayed, she would nail him in place.

She gripped the nail gun tightly in her other hand, feeling her nerves grow taut as she slowly opened the door.

Wai Wenbin, hearing the footsteps approaching, his heart began to pound.

Could it really be Annan?

Just then, the door creaked open, and with a whoosh, a nail shot past Wai Wenbin's face.

His pupils contracted in horror.

It was Annan!

Annan's nail gun!

Wai Wenbin didn't dare look any longer. He immediately turned and ran down the stairs in a panic.

Chu Peipei smiled to herself: got it right.

She raised the nail gun and took another shot at his retreating figure. Unfortunately, her aim was off, and Wai Wenbin fled too quickly, only grazing his ear.

Looks like I'll need to practice my aim tomorrow.

Having the weapon in her hands didn't mean she could use it effectively.

Seeing him vanish from sight, she closed the door and went back to bed.

Tch, thought it would be a big fight, but this guy ran off with his tail between his legs.

On the other side, Wai Wenbin, his heart pounding with panic, finally made it back home, collapsing onto the couch.

He sat there for a moment, catching his breath, before finally breaking down in tears.

He was utterly frustrated!

So utterly frustrated!

After crying for a while, his brain was oxygen-deprived, and he unintentionally fell into a deep sleep.

The next day, Wai Wenbin woke up hungry, his mind clear and determined.

He gritted his teeth, making a decision.
