Rorschach walked into an empty diner and sat down across from a black bald man with an eye patch covering a nasty scar, and the woman he met the previous night, called Black Widow. Rorschach assessed his surroundings: the diner was completely empty except for the two people sitting across from him, and some of the workers approached them to take their order. He thought they were most likely S.H.I.E.L.D agents in case something went wrong. The bald man interpreted his thoughts: 'I am Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and you have already met Natasha,' he said with a confident tone. Nick Fury got straight to the point and asked Rorschach an important question: 'Why do you fight crime? What motivates a civilian with no practically outstanding physical abilities to decide one day that they want to become a vigilante?' he said while looking directly into his eyes, trying to analyze him. Rorschach wasn't fazed and started to explain his motivation. Rorschach explained that many criminals get away with horrible crimes because they bribe people and have really good lawyers. These people get away scot-free with no consequences, so he takes it upon himself to punish those criminals. Nick Fury took a sip of his coffee and said, 'We want the same thing, but we choose to go about it in different ways. In fact, I would like you to join the Avengers Initiative.' Nick put down his coffee and waited for Rorschach to reply. Rorschach asked some questions about the Avengers Initiative, like who was on it and what the goal was. Nick Fury pulled out a file and handed it to Rorschach: 'We have some people in mind like Bruce Banner, but right now we don't have any official members, and the goal of the Avengers is to protect Earth from threats that we can't fight,' he stated firmly. Rorschach responded, 'OK, I will think about joining the Avengers. I will contact you when I make my decision.' Without saying anything else, Rorschach got up and left. He didn't know if he was ready to join another superhero team since he had past experience with the Watchmen.
Nick Fury watched as Rorschach just got up and left without saying goodbye or anything. He could tell that he was a hardened crime fighter who had seen a lot of nasty stuff. The Avengers needed someone like Rorschach, a man who could make tough decisions and a man who would not hesitate to stop crime. Nick looked at Natasha, who was sitting quietly next to him during the whole conversation. 'What do you think of him?' he asked her. Natasha responded, 'He is a good candidate for the Avengers initiative, but his ways of handling criminals might be a problem. Although he isn't known to be nice and might affect the Avengers' image,' she said. Nick Fury got up but not before telling S.H.I.E.L.D to follow him; he had a meeting with some important people about Iron Man.
Rorschach was on top of a roof looking over a fight. It seemed like there were two people in iron suits. He recognized one of them as Iron Man, who had been fighting terrorists in the Middle East. However, he didn't recognize the other man in the iron suit, but he knew he had to do something before things got out of hand. He noticed a car caught in the crossfire of the fight, with iron being thrown into it by the guy in the big iron suit, causing it to catch fire. The car had two adults and one child inside, appearing to be stuck, so he decided to save them before they turned into charcoal. Rorschach jumped down from the roof, tore the car door off, and helped them out as quickly as he could. After saving some civilians caught in the crossfire, he turned his attention back to the battle. He saw that the suits' helmets were off, revealing their identities as Tony Stark and Obadiah Stane. Tony Stark was getting overwhelmed until Rorschach stepped in, throwing an explosion at Obadiah, causing him to be stunned momentarily. This allowed Tony to avoid the big Arc Reactor, which essentially fried Obadiah Stane instantly, resulting in his instant death. With Obadiah's defeat, Rorschach was about to leave when he was approached by Tony Stark, who genuinely thanked him for his help, a gesture completely out of character for him. Rorschach didn't respond, grappled away, and returned to his normal patrol.
Tony Stark was about to address the fight that happened at his facility. He was given an alibi, saying he was at a party, but his mind lingered on that mysterious man who helped him out yesterday. He did some research on him. Apparently, this man was named Rorschach. He mainly operated in Hell's Kitchen. He had no real superpowers but was known for being ruthless to criminals. This man intrigued him, and he wanted some answers. But before he could do that, he had to deal with something important first. So, he got up to the podium and announced live that he was Iron Man. Immediately, all the reporters started to ask questions about why he became Iron Man and a bunch of stupid questions. Tony got back to his place where a black man with an eyepatch greeted him and introduced himself as Nick Fury. He explained that if they faced a threat like the Hulk, they would be completely messed up. That's why they are creating a superhero team who can fight the battles they can't fight, and it is called the Avengers Initiative. Tony, at that time, didn't know that this was just the beginning and that from here things would get a lot more complicated, to say the least.
