Chapter 71 - Chapter 71: The Shattered Rise

The ground beneath Brent's feet cracked, the fractured stone glowing as tendrils of corruption burst upward. Without hesitation, he threw up his shield, the Twilight Flame igniting across its surface. Rae was already beside him, her Soul Weave extending in ribbons of silver light, wrapping around Lysa's Emberheart aura.

"Brace!" Brent roared, driving his shield into the ground just as the Origin Keeper emerged — a colossal serpent of bone and black crystal, crowned with a molten halo. Its roar split the cavern, shaking the very walls of the Nexus.

The mutated monsters Vaelrick unleashed poured through the ruptures behind it — twisted beasts with pulsing crystal spines and venom-dripping maws.

Lysa's hands glowed as she expanded her Kindle Field, patches of light pushing back the corruption's spread. "We can't let them reach the Gate!" she yelled, sweat pouring down her brow.

Brent surged forward, his Ashen Halo blazing, cutting through the front line with cleaving sweeps of his sword. For every beast he dropped, two more emerged. Rae spun alongside him, her Lunar Aspect and Celestial Bond flaring as she unleashed devastating pulse waves, knocking back entire clusters.

The Origin Keeper hissed, rearing back. From its skeletal throat, it unleashed a torrent of black fire — voidflame.

"Down!" Brent tackled Rae and Lysa behind a half-collapsed barrier, the flames scorching over them, charring stone and shattering air. His system pulsed a warning.

System Notification:

With a surge of desperate power, Brent's Twilight Paladin Core pulsed alongside his Shadow Infusion, the two resonances weaving tighter than ever before. His body radiated an unstable glow — and his Flame Resonance erupted into a blinding corona.

Rae rose beside him, eyes narrowed. "It's time," she whispered. "We go together."

Lysa nodded, pressing her hands against their backs, sending waves of rejuvenating energy through them.

Together, the three surged forward — Brent hammering into the Origin Keeper's exposed flank, his strikes burning brighter with each hit; Rae weaving radiant chains through its defenses; Lysa anchoring them with surges of Emberlight that closed their wounds as fast as they opened.

The Keeper roared, its form cracking, bleeding streams of black light.

"Push!" Brent shouted, unleashing a final, devastating combination — Flame, Twilight, Shadow — merging into a storm of raw essence.

With a deafening roar, the Origin Keeper shattered, its body crumbling into glowing shards.

Breathing heavily, Brent turned to his team, eyes burning with purpose. "This was just the vanguard," he murmured. "We need to prepare for what's coming beyond the Gate."

Above them, the Gate began to shift — its runes flickering, revealing a glimpse of the world beyond.

And somewhere, in the shadows far beyond their sight, Vaelrick watched — smiling.

The moment Brent, Rae, and Lysa crossed the threshold, the Second Gate howled open like a wound torn across space.

The sky fractured. Not just above — but below, around, within. The air rippled with energy that didn't belong, as if the world's bones were snapping under the weight of something too big, too old, too alien.

Brent felt his Twilight Flame Core blaze in protest, his body straining to hold itself together. His Flame-Shadow fusion was no longer enough. The deeper energies here clawed into his soul, testing the limits of everything he had become.

Rae gritted her teeth, silver light cracking across her skin like living lightning. Her Soul Core pulsed wildly, the Lunar-Celestial bond screaming warnings in her mind. Beside her, Lysa stumbled — her Emberheart flickering, flaring, nearly consumed.

System Notification:

Warning: Dimensional Strain Detected.

Core Stabilization at Risk.

Before they could even brace, the ground exploded.

Out of the breach stormed horrors — warped beasts stitched from fire and glass, their spines crowned with smoking horns, their limbs pulsing with stolen light. Mutated monsters, not from the old world, not from the next — but from the broken space between.

"Hold the line!" Brent roared, summoning his Ashen Halo. Radiant flame spun around his arms, his shield blazing as he drove into the nearest beast. His blows landed heavy, but the creature didn't just bleed — it cracked open, spilling liquid void that seared through the earth.

Rae flicked her twin blades into her hands, weaving Resonant Flares with every slash. She danced through enemy ranks, deflecting magic blasts back into their twisted throats, but each strike left her Soul Core vibrating dangerously close to rupture.

"Lysa! Now!"

The youngest Emeris spread her hands, her Kindle Field roaring to life. Emberlight rushed outward, wrapping Brent and Rae in a healing cocoon — but the beasts sensed it. Dozens swerved toward her.

Brent's heart slammed in his chest.

No. Not again.

He triggered everything. Flame. Shadow. Twilight. Even the fragile threads of the new energies forming beyond his comprehension. His body screamed — and then broke through.

System Update:

Twilight Flame Core: 112% Overdrive.

He slammed his palms together. The air ruptured.

A wave of black-gold energy ripped out from Brent, shredding through the oncoming swarm — even knocking Rae off her feet, her wide eyes stunned at the raw magnitude.

Breathing hard, Brent dropped to one knee. His vision blurred — but Lysa was still standing, Rae was already pulling herself up.

They'd survived.

But the world was still cracking apart.

And across the battlefield, stepping through the rift with a smile full of jagged teeth, came Vaelrick.

Clad not in human form, but in his true shape — scaled, crowned, radiant with something not of this plane. His eyes burned through the ruins and fixed directly on Brent.

"Little paladin," Vaelrick murmured, voice a velvet knife, "you've come farther than I expected."

Brent staggered upright, the last threads of the Eclipse Surge flickering over his body.

"I'm not stopping here."

Vaelrick grinned wider. "Oh, I know." He raised one clawed hand — and behind him, the Third Gate began to stir.

System Notification:

Brent met Rae and Lysa's eyes. They were battered, bruised, half-spent — but alive. Together.

And now, they were about to face something that could end everything.

"Let's finish this," Brent growled, stepping forward, fire surging through every cell.
