Chapter 25 - The Voidfront

Chapter 26: The Voidfront

The wind howled like a living thing.

At the border of the known world, where the lands of reality crumbled into the howling winds of the Void, a fortress had risen. Crafted from soulsteel and rooted in runic ley lines, Voidfront stood as the last bastion of order before the chaos beyond.

Kazuki arrived at dusk.

Around him, Vanguard forces gathered — warriors, mages, machinists, and seers. Veterans of past wars and the freshly awakened alike, all trained under the unifying banner of the Soul-Bearer.

Aria stood beside him in full battle attire. Her eyes burned with quiet fury. Lyra remained at the Citadel, protected by Kael and a circle of dreamweavers.

"This place will be where history turns," Kazuki murmured.

General Caelus stepped forward. "The rift has widened. Scouts report Nullborn incursions across the Fifth Meridian. We need to move soon."

Kazuki nodded. "Then we make our stand here."

The Weapon Within

As night fell, Kazuki returned to his quarters. He drew Aetherion and placed it before him.

"Tell me what I need to know," he whispered.

Aetherion pulsed.

In a flash of light, Kazuki was pulled into his inner sanctum — a pocket realm within his soul, where truth shaped form.

Before him stood a younger version of himself, dressed in ragged robes, eyes bright with unscarred wonder.

"You fear what you might become," said the boy.

"I fear what I already am," Kazuki replied.

"Then learn. Don't run."

The two clashed — blade to blade, thought to thought — until Kazuki emerged, breathless but renewed. He now carried a deeper connection to Aetherion, able to summon the Chrono Flare — a temporal burst that froze everything within a radius except the wielder.

He would need it soon.

The Assault Begins

At dawn, the first wave came.

Nullborn tore through the sky like cracks in glass. Their leader, a masked specter called Veyra the Flame-Eater, led a burning charge toward the gates.

Kazuki descended from the walls in a blaze, clashing blades with Veyra mid-air. Each strike shattered stone, each clash echoed across dimensions.

Around him, the Vanguard fought valiantly. Aria held the western flank, wielding her starlight lance. Myrr moved like wind through enemies, eyes glowing.

But the tide was shifting. For every Nullborn slain, two more emerged.

Kazuki triggered Chrono Flare.

The world stilled. Time froze. He danced through the battlefield, striking critical foes, saving allies, and disabling a Void gate.

When time resumed, dozens of Nullborn collapsed at once. The Vanguard cheered — hope flickering bright.

An Unexpected Ally

As the dust settled, a rift opened behind the fortress.

A figure stepped out — Noir.

But she was different. Her eyes were conflicted. And she was alone.

"I don't come to fight," she said. "I come to warn you."

Kazuki raised Aetherion. "Why should I believe you?"

"Because you're still me. And I know what's coming next. Something far worse than the Void."

Everyone stood still.

Noir's gaze rose to the sky. "The Dreamless are waking."
