Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5: After

After closing the shop, he headed straight to the hospital. When he arrived, he saw the doctor standing silently in the hallway, staring ahead. As Surya approached him, the doctor grabbed Surya's shoulder and said quietly, "I'm sorry."

Surya's heart sank. Sensing something was wrong, he rushed down the hallway toward the old lady's ward. As he entered, he saw a nurse gently covering the old woman with a white sheet. Panic surged through him. He hurried over, stopping her with trembling hands.

With hesitation and dread weighing down on him, Surya stepped closer to the old lady. Her lifeless body lay still, but there was a faint smile on her face. He reached out and touched her hand. The warmth he had once felt was gone—only cold remained.

He couldn't accept it.

Surya began talking to himself, his voice barely a whisper, "Why... why is this happening to me?"

"Why do the people I love—the ones I care about—always leave me?"

"Why?"

As Surya muttered to himself, the doctor entered the ward and walked toward him. He placed a hand on Surya's shoulder from behind. In a flash of rage, Surya spun around, grabbed the doctor by the collar, and yelled,

"You told me she'd be okay here! Then why did this happen to us? Why?!"

The doctor could only whisper, "I'm sorry."

Furious, Surya shoved the doctor against the wall and stormed out of the ward, his mind consumed by anger and pain. As he wandered the hallway, lost in thought, he spotted the nurse who had once treated him when he was admitted to this hospital—the same time his mother had been taken from him.

With a dark intensity in his eyes, Surya walked up to her, grabbed her hand, and dragged her into a quiet room. Still trembling with rage and desperation, he confronted the nurse.

"Do you remember me? I'm the same kid you treated fifteen years ago—the one whose mother you took from him."

The nurse recognized him. Fear overtook her, and she opened her mouth to scream, but Surya quickly covered it with his hand and growled,

"Don't."

"You should know... after you people took my mother from me, I never stopped thinking about you and that doctor. You can scream all you want, but no one's going to save you. If they come, it'll only be to find your lifeless body on the floor. I don't care anymore. You already destroyed my life. Killing you... might give me just a sliver of satisfaction. Maybe then, I'll find some redemption—for my mother."

The nurse, trembling in helplessness, began to cry. Surya removed his hand from her mouth. She collapsed to the floor, begging for her life.

"I'll tell you everything," she sobbed. "Everything you want to know about your mother."

The nurse began to speak about the deal the doctor had made. He got rid of your mother's body in exchange for a promotion to a higher position. He accepted the offer without hesitation—he took the deal, and with it, he took your mother's body to the morgue. She's still there.

After revealing everything to Surya, the nurse was released, but not without a final warning. Surya turned away, walking toward the morgue, his footsteps heavy with purpose. He stopped just outside, staring at the cold metal doors, and whispered to his mother,

"Amma, I'll get out of this hell soon. I promise."

While walking alone down the hallway, deep in thought, Surya was approached by the doctor. The doctor explained the next steps—the procedure required to claim the old woman's body.

Once the explanation was over, Surya went to the reception desk, completed the paperwork, and began to wait. As he sat in silence, his mind was already racing, planning his next move—he had made up his mind to go back to the recruitment base and prepare for the arrival of the gang's newest member.

After a short while, the doctor returned, accompanied by two men. They were pushing the old woman's body on a stretcher. The doctor called out to Surya.

"Come with me," he said.

He led Surya to the rear of the hospital. There, away from the eyes of others, he finally spoke,

"I'm sorry for what happened. These men will take you to the burial grounds. You can perform the final rites for your grandmother. I'm... truly sorry for everything."

Surya's eyes burned with quiet rage as he replied,

"You're asking for forgiveness? You call yourself a doctor? Do you even know what that means? A man who couldn't save a single life dares to wear that title. You're not a doctor... you're a joke."

The doctor stood silent. He had no words. He simply listened, ashamed, as Surya's cold, brutal words echoed in the air like a final judgment.

Surya sat on the back of the truck as it rolled slowly toward the grounds, his eyes distant and heavy with sorrow.

After reaching the grounds, two men carefully lifted the body and walked alongside Surya. Together, they approached the cremation site to perform the final rites.

Surya took the burning stick with trembling hands and lit the pyre. He stood silently, watching as the flames grew, waiting as the body gradually turned to ash.

While the fire crackled, he whispered his final words to the old lady, his voice thick with emotion.

"Miss... thank you—for everything. You found a starving kid on the streets and gave him a chance at life. You fed me, raised me, loved me like your own. I don't know where I'd be without you. But now... I know what I have to do. This is the last time I'll see you. Goodbye... and thank you."

As the flames died down, so did a chapter of his life. With his heart heavy but mind resolute, Surya had already made his decision. He would go to the gang's recruitment base—and he began walking toward the location.

Fifteen minutes later, Surya arrived at the location. In front of him stood an abandoned complex, its broken windows and crumbling walls hiding shadows within. People moved quietly inside, their silhouettes barely visible.

As he stepped closer to the entrance, a cold chill ran down his spine. Every part of him screamed caution, but his determination held firm. This was the path that would bring him face-to-face with the ones who had destroyed his life.

His fists clenched. Rage and purpose burned in his chest.

With his heart pounding and eyes sharp with resolve, Surya crossed the threshold and entered the complex.
