094: Ser Lena's Earl Dervish Pokémon!!
For example, if a Pokémon has a base strength value of 10, and the energy cost of using a certain move (denoted here as ××) is 1 unit, then under normal Contest Conditions, that Pokémon can use the move ×× up to 10 times before exhausting its energy reserves.
As the Pokémon's strength level increases say, when its strength reaches 100 the energy consumption of the corresponding move will also scale up proportionally, increasing to 10 units per use.
Thus, even as a Pokémon grows stronger, the number of times it can use ×× under full Contest Conditions still remains roughly constant at 10 uses.
Therefore, the PP value (Power Points) of a skill is relatively stable within a certain range of the Pokémon's strength development.
Of course, this is considered basic data in the Pokémon research community sometimes jokingly called Earl Dervish data after a Kalosian researcher who initially proposed this rough scaling theory.
However, with specialized training methods, a Pokémon's effective PP for certain moves can indeed be improved a fact demonstrated in the Pokémon Adventures manga, where Trainers like Red and Gold are shown helping their Pokémon refine move efficiency beyond standard limits.
Nevertheless, this PP value stability only holds within a certain level range.
Once a Pokémon's strength grows beyond a certain threshold (for example, when Mega Evolution, Bond Phenomena, or Dynamax is involved), the original "constant" rule breaks down, and the neat theory no longer fully applies.
Of course, the deeper nuances of all this are complex.
Ash, having only arrived in this world relatively recently, hasn't yet had the chance to study Pokémon theory systematically. What he knows now comes mostly from browsing through Professor Oak's digital library at home two days ago, using his previous life's knowledge to guide his learning.
For example:
The standard PP value for Quick Attack is 30.
After specialized efficiency training, it can be pushed up to a maximum recorded value of 48 though this is not considered an absolute upper limit, merely the best documented so far by professional Trainers.
The standard PP value for Water Sport (the "Liquid Circle" move Bubble Frog uses) is 20, and after optimization, the best recorded value is 32.
At present, Bubble Frog had only recently begun structured training for both moves, meaning its energy control efficiency was still low, leading to greater power consumption than ideal.
After repeatedly using its moves during training and exhausting the stamina in its body, Bubble Frog would need time to rest and naturally recover in keeping with both biological Pokémon data and real-world stamina rules mentioned in the manga.
Thus, it was entirely reasonable that after an hour of intensive morning exercise, Bubble Frog had not yet raised the proficiencies of Water Sport or Quick Attack fully to the proficient level.
Ash understood and accepted this reality.
However, today's experience also served as a valuable warning for Ash.
He silently reminded himself:
In the future, when setting training goals for his Pokémon, he must strive to be realistic and precise, setting achievable targets instead of impulsively aiming too high.
If Pokémon work desperately hard but still fail to meet the goal in the end, it could be extremely frustrating and demoralizing for them — even if the Trainer can rationally accept the outcome.
For the sake of his Pokémon's morale and confidence, Ash realized that careful planning and proper pacing would be crucial to their long-term growth.
But for Pokémon, constant failure and frustration can have a negative impact on their emotional state. This could create a sense of doubt, not only in their own abilities but also in the bond they share with their Trainer. Too much frustration can erode their self-confidence, ultimately affecting their future growth.
Although it's a small detail, Ash made a mental note to remind himself to keep track of this potential problem. If Pokémon train too aggressively without proper guidance, they might lose their motivation and struggle with believing in their own potential.
After the morning training session, Ash decided to take Bubble Frog to the Pokémon Center to seek Ms. Joey's assistance in recovery.
Even though Ms. Joey had already started her shift, she was slightly taken aback when Ash brought Bubble Frog in so early in the morning. For a moment, she thought Ash might have overexerted Bubble Frog, leaving it injured or unwell.
However, Ash reassured her, explaining that the reason for the early visit was simply because he had taken Bubble Frog out for a morning workout.
"Ash, you're really hardworking, but you must be careful," Ms. Joey said, her tone gentle yet concerned. "You've only just started working with Pokémon, and training requires more than just hard work. If you push Bubble Frog too hard without the right experience, you could risk harming it."
Yesterday, Ash's five consecutive victories in the camp's challenge competition had earned him attention from both his fellow students and the staff, including Ms. Joey. The trainee meeting later in the evening had only solidified his status as a Trainer to watch.
"Yeah, okay, I'll pay attention," Ash nodded, acknowledging Ms. Joey's advice without arguing. He understood her words came from a place of kindness, and he knew he had to be more careful in the future.
Once Bubble Frog had been healed and refreshed, Ash led it to the cafeteria for breakfast, where Gary and Shauna had already arrived.
"Ash, where did you go so early? I didn't see you around," Gary asked, raising an eyebrow as Ash sat down.
"I took Bubble Frog out for a morning workout," Ash answered, explaining his early departure.
Afterward, Ash returned Clefairy to Ser Lena, as promised, and shared a brief thought with her via Psychic telepathy.
"Last night, I used Psychic to help Clefairy learn the Fairy-type move Disarming Voice. When you have time, you can help Clefairy train more. I believe it will come in handy later on."
Ser Lena, a bit surprised and pleased, received Ash's telepathic message. However, knowing it involved Ash's Psychic abilities, she was cautious not to reveal too much outward emotion. She simply thanked him mentally, choosing to remain quiet on the surface.
"Ash," Gary interjected, "what's the deal with Bubble Frog training? Isn't it just a temporary Pokémon from the summer camp? It's not really yours to keep, right?"
Gary's words caused a bit of confusion, but Ash didn't seem bothered.
"Unless you win the title of Excellent Student at the end of the camp, in which case you could apply for Bubble Frog to become your Earl Dervish Pokémon."
"Is that so, Ash?" Shauna, who had been listening, asked curiously, along with the rest of the group.
Ash simply nodded without elaborating much, and everyone understood what he meant.
Although most of the Pokémon distributed in the camp had lower qualifications, Bubble Frog was part of the Yusanjia, the highly respected three families of the Carlos Region — a highly prized set of Pokémon from a region known for its impressive Starter Pokémon.
"I really envy you, Ash," Gary remarked with a slight tone of jealousy. "You've got one of the Yusanjia Pokémon. It would be amazing if I had one too."
"Training in advance doesn't depend on whether you have a Yusanjia or not," Ash replied. "Right now, you can still train your Pokémon to accumulate experience. If you manage to get one of the top spots at the end of the camp, you can apply for your Earl Dervish Pokémon right away."
"Then when you go home, you can start training almost immediately. Doesn't that sound amazing?" Ash smiled, and the others nodded in agreement.
"Speaking of that," Gary said thoughtfully, "if you get into the top three, which Yusanjia would you choose as your Earl Dervish Pokémon?"
"I choose Squirtle," Gary replied, confidently.
"I like Squirtle too," Tieruno added.
"Charmander's my favorite," Trevor said with a grin.
"Bulbasaur is definitely the one for me," Shauna chimed in.
Xiaolan, though partial to Pikachu, smiled and said, "Even though I like Pikachu the most, if I can only pick from the Yusanjia, I'll go with Bulbasaur too."
"By the way, Ser Lena, what about you?" Xiaolan asked, turning to Lena with curiosity. "Would you choose one from Kanto's Yusanjia or stick with Carlos's?"
Lena hesitated, feeling a bit shy and unsure. Before, she had never considered it, thinking she wouldn't be able to secure Excellent Student status. However, after Ash's performance in the competition and his quiet confidence, Lena had begun to feel more self-assured.
Now, with the possibility of earning a spot in the camp's top ranks, she had begun to consider her options more seriously.
"Ash," Lena asked hesitantly, "do you have any suggestions? I'm not sure which Yusanjia to choose yet."
