Chapter 49
After searching through the underground city for a long while, Lin Bai finally caught the distant sound of battle. The echoes of roaring beasts traveled for several miles through the tunnels.
"Let's go check it out. Someone's lucky enough to find the BOSS already."
Without hesitation, Lin Bai changed course and moved swiftly toward the noise. His mental power brushed against the dragon knight contract, summoning Ying Tian to regroup.
Xiao Wu, wearing the bloodstained wolf fang necklace around her neck, felt her speed surge. She pushed herself hard to avoid being left behind.
The three of them didn't slow for a second, racing through the dungeon until they reached the source of the commotion.
A blast of heat met them as Lin Bai halted, eyes narrowing as he took in the scene ahead.
In the center of a large rock chamber stood a monstrous wolf — its massive frame a chaotic blend of blue and crimson. Ten meters tall and over forty meters long, its body radiated elemental power. On one side, searing flames raged. On the other, bone-chilling frost clung to the air. The opposing forces clashed, canceling one another out while unleashing violent bursts of raw energy.
The Ice-Fire Demonic Wolf's cold, mismatched gaze landed on the intruders — one eye burning red, the other icy blue. Twin elemental forces churned within those pupils like endless, clashing tides.
Three figures confronted the beast: City Lord Xiao, Dean Chen, and Matthew Nuo, the head of the Wuhun Branch. Somehow, the three had ended up together for this fight.
Lin Bai quickly assessed the situation. Despite outnumbering the BOSS, the three of them were clearly on the defensive. The Ice-Fire Demonic Wolf hadn't even moved from its spot, standing its ground like a natural disaster in beast form.
Just then —
Hummmm!
A thunderous dragon roar split the air as Ying Tian arrived, releasing a wave of dragon might that shook the minds of all present. Beasts with inferior bloodlines immediately felt the suppression, while humans without strong enough mental fortitude found themselves trembling from the pressure.
Lin Bai's gaze stayed locked on the monstrous wolf. "That Ice-Fire Demonic Wolf's no joke. Let's wait for an opening. If it drags on, we'll join the fight — get some experience points while we're at it."
Without another word, Lin Bai leapt onto Ying Tian's back. The Ruyi Qiankun Spear in his hands gleamed with golden light, its blade sharp and fierce. The power of light and darkness twisted around him, forming a black-and-white shield shaped like a Tai Chi Yin-Yang diagram.
"Dragon Breath of Destruction!"
At his command, Ying Tian inhaled sharply. In the span of two heartbeats, the dragon's maw opened wide, releasing a thick gray-black beam of destruction. The energy swallowed up the surrounding frost and fire before slamming into the Ice-Fire Demonic Wolf's side.
Owwwuuu!
The impact left a charred black wound on the beast's flank. Even though Ying Tian's attributes were suppressed by the BOSS's level, the destructive energy burrowed deep, gnawing at the wound like maggots eating away at flesh.
"Lin Bai's here!" the Dean let out a resigned sigh, pointer in hand. Though a Four-Ring Soul Sect, when it came to clearing dungeons, martial spirits and soul skills were still his go-to.
"The power behind that dragon's breath… We've been at it for over ten rounds and only managed to leave minor injuries. That one hit alone dealt more damage than all our efforts combined." City Lord Xiao's bloodshot eyes reflected his frustration. His berserker martial spirit had transformed him halfway into a werewolf, yet it wasn't enough.
Matthew Nuo stood atop a large boulder, quietly watching Lin Bai's figure. He recalled Su Yuntao's words about having personally awakened Lin Bai's martial spirit. Unfortunately, he hadn't managed to recruit the boy early enough. A missed opportunity, indeed.
Lin Bai's voice carried across the battlefield. "You three gonna just stand there? If you won't make a move, don't blame me for taking everything!"
Adventurers didn't follow the same rigid rules as soul masters. Here, if you had the strength and the guts, you could snatch any kill.
While speaking, Lin Bai was already gathering his spear intent, compressing his soul power at the spear's tip until a sharp, golden glow burst forth, aiming directly at the Ice-Fire Demonic Wolf's mismatched eyes.
Meanwhile, Zhu Zhuqing and Xiao Wu weren't idle either.
Zhu Zhuqing's martial spirit flared to life, her first soul ring lighting up as her claws dug into the ground's shadow. Twin shadow claws shot out, waiting to strike at the Demonic Wolf's retreat path.
Xiao Wu, lacking long-range skills, was handed an M9 pistol by Lin Bai earlier — a weapon still usable at lower levels. Now, with one eye squinted in concentration, she took careful aim at the beast's vulnerable points.
Bang!
A gunshot cracked through the air.
In the same instant, other attacks closed in — whip shadows streaking through the air, scarlet wolf claws, broad heavy swords. Every fighter launched their strike simultaneously.
The golden spear light cut through the air, splitting into two beams as it pierced the wolf's mismatched pupils. The jewel-like eyes shattered, though no blood spilled out. Instead, two crystal-clear tears fell.
Whoooosh!
The surrounding flames surged, while the frost dissipated entirely. What remained was a violent inferno encircling the Ice-Fire Demonic Wolf, dyeing its mixed fur a uniform, burning red.
Owwwuuu!
The beast's roar shook the chamber. Empty sockets now burned with fire as it locked onto Lin Bai.
Lin Bai immediately felt the surrounding temperature spike, the flames around him pressing against his soul shield, causing his soul power to drain rapidly.
"Tch… knew it. Stage two, huh? Looks like I'll have to get serious."
By now, Lin Bai had already found the creature's weakness: its size. Though overwhelmingly strong, its sheer bulk made it clumsy — and against the high-speed mobility of a dragon knight, that was a fatal flaw.
"Dragon's Dive!"
Lin Bai gave Ying Tian a pat, and the platinum dragon shot forward like a falling star. At the same time, Lin Bai activated a level-10 dragon knight exclusive skill. It combined the momentum of a knight's charge with the speed of a dragon's dive, forming an unstoppable strike.
The golden spear pointed straight ahead, the sharp force of Gengjin splitting through the inferno. Ying Angel materialized behind them, summoning fierce winds that extinguished nearby flames and boosted their speed.
Above them, a golden dragon shadow took shape, growing clearer as their descent accelerated. By the time they closed in on the Demonic Wolf, the shadow had become fully tangible, baring its teeth and claws before slamming down.
The sea of fire concealed the view from the others. Within it, Lin Bai didn't hold back. The spear pierced the Demonic Wolf's left hind leg as twelve golden spears shot into the air. Using the mentalist's skill Control Object, Lin Bai moved like he had twelve extra arms, executing the Zhao family's spear techniques in flawless succession.
Golden light erupted as the Ruyi Qiankun Spear drove into the beast's vital points. Its health bar was wiped clean in a single, ruthless barrage.
[Congratulations to the adventurer for successfully killing the BOSS Ice-Fire Demonic Wolf. First kill of this dungeon's BOSS. Increased chance of high-level drops by 10%.]
Before the Demonic Wolf's body even hit the ground, several blue silver grasses imbued with red mana shot through the fading flames, wrapping around the beast's legs. Alongside them came a dozen concealed weapons, their sharp edges gleaming.
The sound of air being split made it obvious who it was — Tang San. But unfortunately for him, he arrived a moment too late. He didn't even manage to land a single blow, let alone snag any experience points.
As the BOSS died, the sea of fire gradually faded away. Lin Bai retracted his martial spirit and had Ying Tian descend.
On the scorched ground, over a dozen glowing loot orbs lay scattered. Three of them shone brightest — one purple, two blue.
Lin Bai grinned. "Not bad. A rare-grade purple item from a low-level BOSS. That's what I call a jackpot."
